Gateway for whom.
There's some shoddy production gaps, the characters are all teens, and the plot is pretty 'abstract'. It could certainly be a gateway, but again it depends on whom you're 'gating'.

I have a bunch of friends who aren't normally into anime who loved Shingeki no Kyojin, so I'd say yes. But it depends on the person, I wouldn't recommend it to, like, a girl who was only into romantic comedy movies, for example.

The plot isn't very abstract really. There are some production gaps, but for the most part the production is really high quality so it makes up for it.

As far as who the target audience is, yeah it just depends. A lot of people will like it, some won't.

Well, i'd think that for the average joe, spiderman lite soldiers fighting giant-humanoid-'titans' while hiding in a giant walled colony is a decent bit 'out there' as far as premises go.

I will agree, the initial premise is a bit out there, if you were to just describe it to someone for the first time. Once you get into it though, the actual plot is easy enough to follow.

But that's taking away half of the fun of reaching the plot yourself. On topic, no it would not go something with an easier and enjoyable plot, from there they will eventually seek harder plots and look for key elements in anime, remember everyone has different taste.

Yeah, of course it could be a gateway. I know a lot of people who don't usually watch anime have watched and enjoyed SnK. I think the initial draw of SnK is that it was shocking, dramatic, and the titans were so 'wtf'. It created so much hype that it caught even non-anime watchers attention.

Anything that gets people out of their normal hobbies can be considered a gateway. Maybe people who might not have been interested in anime as a medium before might see SnK and like what it is capable of and open up their horizons to other animes...

I like Highschool of the Dead, but I don't agree with you at all about it being the anime to use as a gateway for someone not into anime. To Shingeki no Kyojin's credit, I had a close friend who is not an anime fan watch episode 1 and now he loves it!

It could work for some people, but Death Note and Angel Beats are still my top gateway picks. (I know Angel Beats has a ton of flaws, but it usually manages to really get to people despite that. And Death Note is Death Note.)

Highschool of the Dead was actually my gateway to anime. But SnK and Death Note are both good ones to get people into anime.

For several of my friends it was gateway, but in my opinion Death Note or something sad like Clannad or Angel Beats is much better as gateway anime.

when im seeing people who dont even know what anime is talking about how great "attack on titan"(i hate that name) is then i think it really shows if its gateway or not

The start is fast paced and gets most viewers hooked immediatly and the animation is good on the eyes with music good on the ears.

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Yes, but it definitely depends on the person.

And there's also the negative possibilities about someone who's never watched anime before having high expectations of the same quality with other animes once they finish.

I had a similar problem with myself from ending up watching Fate/Zero first and then Fate/stay night, being a total downgrade, and ended up dropping it. (Did end up playing the LN though and enjoyed it)

Yes. If you doubt it just look at the amount of SnK videos in Youtube. There is even a video where are whole family was watching it.

SnK is great gateway for a lot of people, but not for everyone, of course. Age of introduced people doesn't matter much - I've started to watch SnK when I was 14, and I thought: "It's great! I need to show it to friends". I didn't even know I was underaged - no one wrote age limit on polish site so people started to talk about it. Some people said it's 16+, but the most of people thought it's 12+. And no one checked real limit on english site. I also think that the real world is often more cruel than hardcore productions. I've got an example. My grandparents lived in IIWW reality and they saw how nazis and russian soldiers stole a lot of goods and some lives when they had 4-10 years old. In this time, alnost 20% of people who lived in Poland were killed-that's about 6,5 millions of people. Poland also lost another 4 millons of citizens due to change the borders and russian occupation. 35 million country in SIX years became 25 millon country - that's nearly 30% loss. So in statistics look like this: if you had got 5-people family, you lost average 1.5 member. Anyway, i think I wrote too much off-topic. Let's go back: SnK is great for everyone who like action, but also want to get some 'smart entertainment', not like eg. Naruto. For me age shouldn't be a big border.

it depends on the person

at first I was kinda turned off by all the blood and titans killing people (most of the time my eyes were closed at the beginning of the series lol) but then I started to get used to it (or maybe it was simply because there was less scenes like that, probably) and that's when I started to enjoy Shingeki

so yeah, AoT is not for everyone

PD: my gateway to anime was 07 GHOST lol

Anything can be a gateway anime to some person. Just based off of it's massive popularity, I would say that it would at least be a decent gateway anime because people have a high chance of liking it. I don't really think that anything without a dub is a smart choice for a gateway anime though.

It's now getting a dub version so wonder if that will make it a higher chance of people getting into it.

I'd say that Shingeki no Kyojin is a pretty decent gateway anime, as it has a half gripping story...it happened to be my gateway anime-ish. But I adore the series in its entirity :P

Well, definitely yes.

Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) is the first anime I've ever watched and it's so epic, it got me hooked into watching a lot of anime and being obsessed with Japanese culture and stuff, even though SnK has little to do with Japan.

Same thing as Madoka, Free! and the Dangan Ronpa anime if I can remember.
