Quite a good episode, but I can't help but nitpick that Monica probably wouldn't have trouble finding work as a ballerina in the West, not to mention getting help from governments happy to embarrass the Soviet Union by welcoming a high-profile defector like a prima ballerina, all of which makes her pressing need for money evaporate.

Also, "Monica" isn't a very Russian name.

Maybe she wouldn't, but why work if you can live in luxury and freedom and not work?

You have a point here, but in that case she would be more like a political prisoner and not "free"

It could be an alias

And a little animation fail:

Btw, if you understood what was written in those so-called "passports" you would laugh. It's actually some random Russian texts

Since she works in an artistic field I expect her to have some personal interest in her work. If she's supposed to be tired of it all and wants to chuck it, only a line of dialogue or two could accomplish that, but the episode doesn't explore the idea.

If she wasn't tired of her current life, would she risk all she has to change it? Besides, if you don't know that, in USSR all people should have had some kind of work, otherwise you could go to jail (there was an appropriate article in the criminal code called "idleness" or something like that), and maybe it wasn't her choice but her parents', for example? And it's not like she would be easily allowed to quit the job, once she became so famous as she was
And it's not guaranteed that she would earn a lot of money in USA, and she herself said that she needed it. Maybe she wanted to establish her own ballet-house, who knows?

Loved this episode. Absolutely solid in all the right areas.

Jigen thinks this is going to be a memorable journey; I think it's definitely a memorable episode. Who's the director of this episode, if anyone knows?

And what are the names of the musical pieces in this episode? I recognize them all, but can't put a finger on the titles or composers.

The US dub is pretty funny in this one, doing one of my favourite Russian caricatures (broken English), but the Japanese dub is still better in impact, hands down.

The first one is "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. Would like to know the rest, too

Absolutely excellent episode. Definite stand-out from Part II. Also, I'll point out that it isn't "Monica" but "Monika". I don't know if that makes it any more accurate, but at least it's spelled more "Russian" than otherwise. Haha.

This episode was written so well that Monika being slingshotted over that bridge felt really out of place with the rest of the episode. Would've liked to see something more ingenious there. Oh well.

Vengeance of everyone's grudge.

Monika is just a variation of Monica and they are both spelled the same in Russian, so it doesn't really matter.
Monica is more of a Poland name, but Poland wasn't part of the USSR. I don't know, maybe this name was common in some of the republics like for example Lithuanian Republic, but definitely not in Russian Republic

Fantastic episode, definitely ranks up there with my favorites. Loved the snowy atmosphere and music. That one song from Swan Lake they kept using was both thematically appropriate and a song I love. Makes me think of Bela Lugosi's Dracula. XD Of course the main meat was Jigen helping Monica, and they made a fine duo. Even their inevitable parting was on relatively good terms, with Jigen giving her the jewel to aid her new life, wonderful. :) Also, pretty sure the Geneon title for this was their worst one so far. XD

Ah this was back then when Soviet Union still exist, so no freedom

That jewel is definitely on better hand, at least better than on Fujiko's hand xD

Jigen's runaway journey with Monica was pretty nice. It felt like they had something going on and she was ready to risk it all for her freedom. She seemed to have an idealized vision of America, but Jigen was nice enough to share the other side of it with her. And well, she was putting up an act and already knew it in the end. She knew she needed money to be free and that's why she used Jigen like that. Kind of a poignant conclusion to a good episode. It's nice to see Jigen being the star.

Absolutely excellent episode!

The Russian setting was nice the snow really helped create those feeling of isolation and harshness and the moments where Jigen and Monica were able to find comfort in the bed of a shack or in front of a crackling fire really helped to highlight how they were getting more cozy and intimate as their journey progressed; naturally the musical scores from Tchaikovsky were a perfect touch!

Also, Monica what a sweet beauty <3 of course then I remembered this was a Jigen romance story and thus, his heart would be broken by the end but I wanted to believe he had found someone that reciprocated his feelings and was not going to betray him but then I saw her freak out when Jigen tried to re wrap his bandage and any small hope I had sank with that scene sadly 😔

I did enjoy the antics of Fujiko in this episode as well with her dancing around like a ballerina to her stripping a Soviet lady officer for her uniform very funny, amusing and cute X3 I can see why Lupin loves her even when she does underhanded things XD

The vision Monica had of America warmed my spirits a bit I have found it is a similar outlook many have when wanting to be a part of the U.S.A. is it a bit idealized? Sure and America has its own set of problems I do not think anyone will argue that but if there is one thing America has that is not an illusion it is hope; the idea that tomorrow can be better and that reaching happiness for you and your next of kin is possible. Plus, compared to the Soviet F**king Union I would say it is no contest XD hell they called Jigen a Capitalist worm and were going to execute him without a trial just for helping Monica escape and he even had critiques of the U.S.A. several of which I fully understood as major problems but others I was scratching my head at especially the sex and drugs critique; like Jigen sex is not really a negative XD (maybe he was talking about the illegal trafficking of both but that happens everywhere in the world)!

Anyway the ending was particularly impactful; Jigen suspected betrayal (it is senses like that which have kept him alive in this business) and had Lupin ready in waiting. It seemed Monica agreed with Jigen that money is required for freedom; a sad reality. But, the look she had when Jigen gave her the diamond even when he could have walked right there showed in my opinion that deep down she had made a horrible mistake and that she knew she missed out on a beautiful future with Jigen; helping those in need deep down is just the man that Jigen is. While his heart may be broken it will never truly harden to the point where he will not give love a chance or refuse someone seeking aid; some may call it foolish I call it human by surviving and protecting others in this crazy and chaotic world.

Then him shooting his fake passport effectively ending his romantic honeymoon fairy tale and resuming the hard step pathway of his thief reality; just magnificent!

Excellent episode, after seeing enough Lupin everyone knows how Jigen's adventures with women end but the journey getting there sure was enjoyable.
