| Those of you who are saying this is bullshit should obviously read a bit more carefully. The OP specifies the early twentieth century; which you seem to be equating to contemporary Western society. It does not seem unlikely to me that public nudity was acceptable in Japan historically (see: Onsens) and Japan certainly did try to appeal to Western customs in the early twentieth century (see: Sailor Outfits) and finally that Western culture in the early twentieth century was socially conservative (see: Prohibition, Christian Values, Fascism). I'm not saying that Western values are definitely the reason for this censorship, but it's certainly not an unreasonable suggestion to make. |
