Personally I think the characters in this show are pretty good, especially Yui and Yuuya. Their relationship literally changed from a hateful one into a loving one, something that is pretty rare these days imo. I don't understand why this show is rated so low when other series like Hagure Yuusha/Campione, which don't even add anything new to the table, are rated higher.

Not that I'm complaining, just want to lay my opinion out there.

Massively. When you have silly ecchi shows get only comments about how fun they are and then you get a tone of critic in this one and people calling it shit when it's still massively better than things like Campione or Hagure Yuusha no Estetica and yet it scores lower then you realize something is off.
Maybe it's the autience it attracts. Maybe they are more demanding and the types that think that something like Hagure Yuusha no Estetica is a 9 don't even bother with such a show so the show ends up with a tone of whiny over-criticizing type of viewers.
Also there are all this shittheads that just give it a low score because it has blood and core or mecha and they hate those elements. For fucks sake how stupid can you be?! It's a mecha R rated show, what did you expect? Is like watching porn and being offended that it has naked people incide. Idiots!

And anyway there is also the luck of hype that i don't know what magical recipe creates it. For example SAO was already a success before it even begins because of the hype machine. People rating ten before they even saw anything because they believed it would be awesome. Why did that had so many waiting to give it a ten i have no idea.
This one had exactly the opposite, a lot of people waiting to crucify it.

Anyway this show has it flows but compared to what other a lot more stupid shows get it really feels unfair. From last season this was basically the only show that offered a slight senien atmosphere compared to all the ecchi, moe, slice of life shows but it seems the anime community has deteriorated to almost only otaku style preferences.

This.

It's hardly fair when people who have played the VN (MLA) rate this poorly just because it doesn't live up to the high standard. For a side story adapted from a LN, I honestly believe it's doing a good job despite its many flaws. Sure it's by no means a great anime, but compared to the average harem/ecchi, this certainly deserves more praise than what its been getting.

I believe it's going to climb higher along the series end...Especially considering the probability that Total Eclipse's ending already reaches the original trilogy's timeline.

Now we just have to tell the new viewers that the beach arc didn't exist, and they should be fine. Especially when they seems to spent more budget in recent arcs.

It's quite the opposite, really.

When the first two episodes aired, there were edgy 12-year-olds praising it because of the gore and how dark/mature they thought it was. It built up false expectations in people who are unfamiliar with the franchise and made them think that the focus of the franchise is primarily on things like gore when gore is actually only a small part of the franchise and more of an ancillary plot device than anything else, to drive a bit of character or plot development. It's not gratuitous. When the series went the other way, taking a more light hearted approach to things, as the VN trilogy is for the majority of its duration, it was getting dropped left right and centre for not being like the first two episodes. You just have to look at all the comments of all the anime only viewers lamenting how nothing else was the first two episodes to see that.

Some of those people have hung on, but thankfully most of them have left. I'm glad, because that means that the Muv-Luv franchise won't get raped as hard as the Fate franchise by edgy "gore and dark anime only for mature people like me" teenagers and the like.

There's no or in it. It's all or nothing. Alternative is nothing without Unlimited, which in turn is nothing without Extra. They come as a three.

Anyone who's been a fan of the franchise for more than a week would know that the animated trilogy would be infeasible without a serious amount of funding. Nobody expects the trilogy to get made any time soon, if ever simply because of the budget that would be required to produce something that requires at least 4 cour + movies.

Nobody even expected TE to get animated, let alone the VN trilogy. Most Muv-Luv fans were thankful for even having something animated. The trilogy is a long long way off and realistic fans still don't expect to see it any time soon. Not in a way that would do it justice either. You'd need studios like KyoAni for Extra and Unlimited and something like ProdIG for Alternative to do it any justice.

Personally I don't think it's underrated.

I was willing to forgive it despite some flaws such as the awful episode 1 and some scenes in episode 2 and 3 (LETS STAND DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE DESTROYER CLASS, I'M SURE NOTHING WILL GO WRONG RIGHT GUYZ?) but overall I was still pleased on where the show is going.

However I dropped it after founding some online pictures showing Tarisa in a maid outfit, the beach episode and the introduction of Cui Yifei. I can infer from this that the show is no longer going to take itself seriously and even if it does try it's going to fail spectacularly.

Could be wrong though as this is all speculations, I'll just have to wait until the anime finishes.

How is it underrated? It's a trainwreck.
After 2 alien guro episode, a bunch of harem and fanservice episode;
now we are presented an organized military rebellion!
Wow. Just wow.
To think it's going to end in several episode too.

Underrated? After watching the first 2 episodes I was expecting some serious business, not episodes full of pointless fanservice (like the ones in the island or the one in the hot springs), and what's worse, the little gore it has has been brutally censored, so no, it's not underrated at all. I kept watching it because I had the hope it would get to the level of the first 2 episodes and now well, dropping it would make no sense.

Yeah i don't know why either, it definitely deserves better. I think it's at least a 8, I think it's actually in the very low sevens bit it's been a while since I checked. Most of the complaints Iv heard were from people who saw the first few episode and though it was going to be more hardcore violence. Personally I like it better this way, though it could use a little more action here and there but the story is good. Hopefully it's rating will go up on the future.

What is this series adapting from, is the original material a visual novel or some novels? I heard that Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse is just a side-story of the big-time superior and all-popular visual which contains the main plot and storyline

Because with Hagure and campione, its intended audience got what they wanted (myself included who was one of the ones who rates those two higher than Muv Luv). Its why I think the MAL rating system is flawed anyway, because opinions will be biased based on reception to something. You considered Hagure and Campione not bringing anything new to the table, I on the other hand DID think it brought something fresh to the Harem genre, a real Harem end for Campione and a good Harem lead for Hagure, but you and Monad have voiced my point, you had different opinions of it....but back on the point to Muv Luv.

I watch Muv Luv for the character interaction, action and comedy/ecchi moments. So frankly I haven't been disappointed at all. But some people were coming in here for specific Beta conflict and feel they were cheated. Its already been established that Total Eclipse was never meant to be the direct battlefield story some were hoping for, but many came thinking that's what they were gonna get. And well, they were let down.

But me personally, I'm still enjoying this and it will probably still get like a 8 from me. Nothing is objective, just because something doesn't get hype doesn't mean it can't be good for you. One thing I follow is that I personally believe its better to use the RECOMMENDATION section of this site over the rating, it gives you a better idea on what to expect and if its for you.

yes and no.
the rating atm is: 7.061 (scored by 5553 users)

i absolutely agree with 7/10 maybe even 7.5/10 BUT only 5553 ppl rated this show and that isnt much so yes in this sense it IS underrated. but we cant really know if more ppl watched the show and liked it but maybe didnt rate it.

there is alot of overrated crap on MAL (dont get me started) but this one is rated fine for my taste.

i only can imagine the first few episodes and the BETA scenario turned off alot of people which is really sad because we all know how well the story and everything developed int he following episodes. atleast that is my opinion.

I think this is overrated to be honest lol
a 7??
After watching the last few episodes that was a bit better it seems like the previous episodes were all filler. Many clips of Yuya's harem trying to get in his pants but failing because he is completely oblivious lol.
The first couple of episodes of the series looked promising but I seriously don't know where the anime was going and I still don't lol. I thought they were suppose to fight the beta but now some how they are fighting the beta BUT this insurgent group called RLF comes out of no where. The whole series just feels completely disjointed. Character development seems really awkward if you can even call it character development. Yuya is one of those annoying oblivious male characters and Yui ain't much better.

This anime deserves a 5 or 6 at most.

Overrated...

Yeah i had different expectaitions for this show after the first 4 episodes. I thought it was gonna be a serious mecha scifi but it turns out nope its just a boring half ass show... and Im even reviewing it for people. I understand why the first beach episode was in there but the plot was going so well and then fan service like a crazy little kid. It broke all sense of plot and direction while teaching us nothing except some characters are lesbians. Really this should be a 9/10 for the first 2 episodes and then a 5/10 for the rest.

Thats kinda what SAO was to me as well a great start with a couple of plot holes but not bad to complete crap. and again first couple of episodes a 9/10 down to a 5/10 for ALO. Just overall overrated shows.

This show is not much for material performance such as animation and soundtrack, but what it lacks for in this aspect is made up for in storyline and character development. The way they develop the characters' story is alot better than most mainstream stuff like Fate/Zero for example.

No. The series is boring. The first couple of episodes were exciting, and reminded me of Gai-Rei: Zero. Now? It's not even about the BETA anymore. People are having political skirmishes when humanity is on the brink of extinction. Good job.

I agree with most others, the first two episodes were great, since then its been randomly switching between the beta vs human and the annoying harem with extremely awkward characters, It might have been underrated if they stayed consistent throughout the series.

If anything this anime does right , it would have to be their mech battles not to mention that it gives that military and aircraft sorta combat to it.

After completing it, I will say it's certainly not underrated. My initial hopes for it were shattered when it opted to not focus on the BETA actions and instead go for the typical harem route. What's worse is that they introduced the final arc way too late in my opinion, thus the ending feels extremely rushed and unfulfilling. They also did a shitty job at concluding the romance between Yui and Yuuya.

Overall I think this anime is nothing more than average. Truly a disappointment seeing how much better it could've been. Now it's unlikely MLA will ever get an adaptation...T_T

It´s sad to see people bash the series for what THEY think it should have been rather than praise it for what it is.

I agree with most that the beach episode should have never seen the light of day but aside that, it´s a solid show that deserves better ratings than it has. I mean come on, how many times do you see a normal trained soldier pilot a mech instead of some angsty 15 year old who just miraculously hppens to be around the worlds strongest mech when shit goes south and he operates it better than pros by pure intuition.

And so what if there isn´t so much action in it ? As far as I know the ML series concentrates more on character interactions than mindless alien eliminiation. Sure, there could have been more of it but I still don´t find it lacking.

Can heroic age be even counted as mecha ? It´s not really piloting if you ARE the damn thing. But ok, let´s play.

Macross ---- NGE, Vandread
Tekkaman Blade ---- Gunparade March, Gigantic Formula
Blue Gender ----- Guren Lagan, Gundam Seed
Break Blade ------ Aquarion, Argento Soma

and I didn´t even start .... you can try all you want but you´ll never win because there are simple too few anime like that which makes Muv Luv uique in its own way and that´s why it is underrated.

and as for Souske: yeah, around 17 AND already a sergant working for a PMC lead by a 16 year old girl... not very convincing ^^

P.S: Break blade doesnt really have a trained soldier pilot as far as I know... but I´ll let it pass since he´s not 15

I would agree that this anime is slightly underrated. First of all I'm not a fan of the visual novel and had no expectation for this anime at all. And of course i enjoyed the show a lot even with the many personal flaws (i.e. don't really care for fanservice, relationship between the lead characters didn't feel natural at all, and it irritated me during the scenes when they talk and like they are in the middle to evacuating or some shit... they waste a lot of time in life and death situations. Nevertheless, i still was able to watch it without feeling bored.

I feel like it cut out half of the plot, where some major things were unexplained or summarized. That, and the way it ended, feels like it had 12 more episodes to go to just complete the story.

Not really. It's generic mecha harem with passable writing, mediocre characters with stereotypical traits and relationship dynamics, and little apparent creative force behind it. 7 seems pretty generous to me.
