So I got bored today and just started doing this...
*All the pages indicated in this thread are calculated from the Baka-Tsuki PDF files. Basically anything not story related and all images were excluded.

So according to my calculations the series will be about 17.5 episodes if they just stay to the main story and the few SS we KNOW they're doing.

Of course this only if they follow the stories to the absolute letter [which we know they aren't doing].

Based on the titles of the next few episodes we can hypothesis that they are going to shorten the Aria SS from 3 episodes down to 1 episode. Based on that information we can make the assumptions that anything under 3 episodes can, and will most likely be, shortened to 1 episode.

Based on that information you can say this now... the SAO main story and SS will be between 12 and 13 Episodes long. Even if they length one or two of the SS that will only change it to a moderate length of maybe 14 and 15 episodes. Of course they won't go word for word so you can probably even short the main story to 6 episodes.

So.... unless they are going to add more SS and a lot of fillers that will distract and break up the pacing of the story, I can't really see how they are going to make this a 24-26 episode series based solely on the SAO arc.

Now let's see what the ALO arc is...

So it's only about 10 episodes long [if they do it word for word]. If they were to add it as the last half of the series it would definitely fit nicely there...

15 Episodes [SAO arc max amount of episodes]
11 Episodes [ALO arc max amount of episodes, plus one for good measure]
26 Episodes

So there you have it... My bored ramblings and calculations for this series. Before you say it YES! I have way too much time on my hands.

*All calculations are approximate and at the very best are guesses [though educated ones]. This mostly as a bored thing to kill time, but I thought it was interesting and so decided to post it.

I'm glad I could make someone smile today. It was just to kill time, but once I started it actually was kind of fun to do.

Oooo I really, really want them to do the ALO arc! If they don't, the anime will kinda be left in a bad place lol.

But they might include all those other stories from volume eight also. Then there's all those other side-stories...

Meeby three seasons? Or four if they do the PB volumes. :3

Way to be off on your calculations.

For one an episode of SAO is 20 minutes long and for the other which pdf files did you use, there are different ones.

Off? really?!..... then how come my calculations said that the SAO arc would between 13-15 episodes long? And it is!

Also the episode was 24 minutes long on the first episode[which was the only episode available at the time] since it had no title song and I skipped the end song. I used the PDF's from Baka-Tsuki and LiTTleDRAgo.

Like I mentioned in the post I did NOT count any of the title, content, foreword, acknowledgements, and other NON-story related pages [which also includes the pictures] in the page counts. So the page counts are for word for word story-lines only.

lol nice calculations :) although i already figured out what they were planning on doing ever since episode 3 all the rushing was way too obvious, but red nose reindeer still gets one episode? -__- I think everyone would agree that they needed at least 2 episodes for that arc.

Also i think if you included "first day" the SAO arc would have been longer but they decided to cut out content and rush a few things so that they could include ALO which would take around 10 episodes but 1 extra episode to wrap things up

Well every episode (exept the first) has an opening and ending song both 1 minute 30 seconds long like with every anime. The normal episode end at around timestamp 23:30. Then we have the usual panning in the episode (timestamps, titlecard ect.) which take of from the remaining 30 seconds.

That brings us to about 20 minutes and a bit of seconds.

LiTTleDRAgo pdf ... well the typeset is a bit condensed but it will do for calculation. Basically as long as it is around 300 pages will do Which is the lenght of a standard novel.

Let us for a moment assume we are dealing with a word for word adaption which expands on the given content (Haruhi, Fate Zero and other).

Those adaptions have 7 episodes per volume. On 300 pages where we have most likely around 20 pictures and empty pages we get 280.

Divided in half it is 140 and 140 divided by 20 minutes is 7. So one page makes about 30 seconds in animated form.

What do we have as material for Aincrad? Volume 1, 2 and 8. Replace Caliber from vol 8 with Aria and while aria is a bit longer ... you should get to 21 and a little episodes.

21,875 to be exact.

With 3 anime only episodes about laughing coffin one could very well make a whole season just on Aincrad.

But well ... there are other things with SAO that one could improve.

I really hate repeating myself so I'll say this once more.... Read the original post again. The time I wrote the calculations was just after THE FIRST EPISODE. so all calculations are based on the information from that time. I was not aware of Murder mystery SS being animated at the time and the only reason I knew they were Yui, Silica, and Lizbet SS's was because they had their characters cast. We knew about Aria SS because it was the next episode and Red Nosed Reindeer was already listed. Based on that information, plus the page count that was animated in the first episode, and the length of the first episode I did these calculations.

YOu could have done the entire 24-25 episode series on just the SAO arc if you did every SS and the main storyline word for word or damn near close to it. But they didn't.

Regardless read the original post again and you'll know all the information you need to understand how I got my answers.

Well yes there are a lot of things the animators didn't (sadly).

A funny thing I noticed when I did episode calculations on some SideStories that RNR would perfectly fit an episode with skipped opening. Guess that one got the most complaining for some unknown reason.

Alas it was either gonna be an extremely slow paced 25 episode arc of SAO or a slightly rushed 2 arc anime of ALO+SAO

but at least we get to see sugu xD

Now that you say slow paced ... omg why didn't I notice this sooner ...

OK well I think I know why they are burning through the SAO Novel like there is no tomorrow.

From the very beginning I wondered why an Iwakami project (Bakemono, Madoka, Fate) would be like this. Most of the Anime on his productiion lineup get all the time in the world to finish their story.

Well Btooom! is going on air this week. It has trapped in an online game but goes more for boobs and bombs.

SAO simply doesn't want to lose. So they pit action against action.

Must've been really bored, congrats.

Too bad this doesn't change anything now, most side stories were compressed into one episode. *cough*AriaEspecially*cough*

wait btoom is getting an anime? lol that will be interesting to watch :) there are so many animes and mangas that are being based on games now (SAO, AW, btoom etc.)

there are other possible reasons why they wanted to animate 4 volumes instead of 2.

Like they wanted to have a bit more action and in their episodes but i don't think they wanted to compete with btooom when they are completely different genres and have different target audiences.

it could also be due to the fact that if they didn't want to include those boring filler arcs or make arcs that aren't even relevant to the story at hand.

another reason could be that they are planning on ending SAO on Volume 4 with a good ending and won't be continuing with GGO T_T

i seriously hope they animate GGO, Asada is probably one of my favourite characters in SAO :)

i also want them to animate mothers rosario so that i can see the infamous "sleeping knights" in action :D
