If it's mainly slice of life (K-ON, Lucky Star, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Working!!, Nichijou, Acchi Kocchi)
If the hero(ine) ruins it (Zero no Tsukaima, Shakugan no Shana, possibly anything else with a tsundere heroine)
If I'm simply not interested in the theme and/or story and it's possibly overrated as well (Tiger & Bunny, TTGL, Fate/stay night, Arakawa, Black Lagoon, Fractal, Dog Days, Inazuma Eleven Go, FMA(B), Recorder to Randoseru, Accel World, Sakamichi no Apollon, Uchuu Kyoudai, Zetman, Shiba Inuko-san)
If it's a horror anime
If the cast of seiyuu ruins it for me (Kuroshitsuji, Chihayafuru and lots of anime with Miyano Mamoru)
Anime that are both not appealing and seem overrated to me (To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Shinryaku! Ika Musume, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Infinite Stratos, Kore wa Zombie Desuka?, Mirai Nikki, Steins;Gate, Tiger & Bunny, Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, Mayo Chiki!, The Idolm@ster, Hayate no Gotoku, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Kimi to Boku, Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!!, High School DxD, Papa no Iukoto o Kikinasai!, Another, Mysterious Girlfriend X, possibly Kuroko no Basket, AKB0048)
If I've already read the manga beforehand (Bakuman, probably won't watch Gintama if I'll ever read the manga)
If I've already been disappointed by the original (Kimi ni Todoke, Kaichou wa Maid-sama)
The only thing that could keep me watching is one character (Ao no Exorcist)
All kinds of YGO! clones
If it's a mecha series (not all, but a lot)
If it's an unnecessary sequel (Digimon Xros Wars, PKMN)

Refusing to watch an anime is one thing, but refusing to watch it because of incorrect information is entirely different and just plain wrong.

By your logic, if I refused to watch something because I didn't like a synopsis or 'beginning of the story', I wouldn't have watched LOTRO. Seriously, a hobbit has to go destroy a ring that has the power to make the wielder the most powerful ruler in the world. Sounds like a generic fantasy plot, but it ended up being one of the most epic trilogies ever.
