Just curious on other's opinions on whether Hayao Miyazaki's Movies should be considered its own genre or considered to be anime.

Since it Miyazaki's works came out of an animation studio (Ghibli), strictly speaking, they are anime. Tough as he closely supervized every step of each project, it's true that you can also say he set standards, and pretty much a genre ofhis own.

Anime doesn't have a singular art style....so yes Miyazaki is anime.

I understand that having an "Anime" artstyle isn't exactly bound by certain guidelines, but in the sense that some of the key Anime art characteristics are not present, although it is not bound by set rules.

The western definition of anime is anything that's animated and from japan, so no matter how great you think his movies are, they are still anime. Although he is probably the most well known creator of anime movies they aren't hugely different than other anime. About the genre thing, most of his movies are basically normal anime with a touch of supernatural or fantasy, Spirited Away is about a girl and her family in our world who stumble upon a pathway to a world full of youkai. That's actually a part of japanese mythology and is used in other anime(being spirited away means being hidden by the gods), stumbling upon a path that's only supposed to be seen by youkai, and the importance of your name is also in japanese folklore.
