Yeah, I saw about that when I looked up the topic on google. When you put it that way it seems quite disrespectful. lol I'm not sure that's the right prayer for eating, though. |

| I was watching a jdrama yesterday and it was used, but the sub said "Grace" and nothing more. I don't think that was too accurate. |
| I'm pretty sure it's just something polite to say before eating. There's no direct translation, so really anything said in this thread could be considered correct. |

| Having a hard time using Google? Meals in Japan traditionally begin with the phrase itadakimasu (いただきます?) (literally, "I humbly receive"). The phrase is similar to "bon appétit", or saying grace to give thanks before a meal. It is said to express gratitude for all who played a role in preparing, cultivating, ranching or hunting the food. This also acknowledges that living organisms have given their life to human beings as Dāna.[1][2] Upon finishing a meal, the Japanese also use the polite phrase Gochisōsama-deshita (ごちそうさまでした?) (lit. You were a Feast (preparer)). Sama is the honorific word which gives respect to the person. So this phrase basically gives respect for making the meal. It is considered polite to clear one's plate, down to the very last grain of rice; children are especially encouraged to do so – see also mottainai as Buddhist philosophy. It is impolite to pick out certain ingredients and leave the rest. | English is pretty special in that it doesn't have an equivalent for itadakimasu. Personally, I prefer 'Thanks for the meal!' or 'Let's dig in!'. |

| To my best of knowledge, "Itadakimasu" is the very polite and humble form of "Morau", which means "to receive" in Japanese. So basically, itadakimasu is just a really humble way of acknowledging that you've received something (in this sense, a meal, although it could be anything depending on the context). English does not have this honorific system that Japanese has, so there is no true best direct translation. |

I still wonder why one would thank god for a meal, when he really had no part in preparing it. Youd better thank your mom/wife, farmers and stuff. Theres no equivalent in English, so really everything works. |
