started off with dragonball, then dragonball Z and gundam wing. then years past and a friend recomended me FMA so that got me "back" into anime :)

then it was a bit hard to find stuf i liked (found soul eater and tried death note wich i eventualy had to drop due to lost intrest)

but H2o footprints in the sand, clannad (AS), kanon (2006) and toradora got me into romance/drama and couldn't stop watching since :D

Although, Speed Racer was technically my first, I didn't know about animes at the time.

The anime series that aired on Toonami was part of the main reason I started loving them: DBZ, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Ronin Warriors, G-Gundam and Voltron. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were also part of the reason too.

Hm, I recently cited Myself;Yourself and Busou Renkin as being what got me into anime...

...but thinking back, the first time I became aware of anime was when I saw some trailers for Air in an electronics store. Fortunately, the title was right there, so I watched that, then moved on to Maburaho.

I feel so lucky to have started with such an amazing piece of work :D

The awful truth is Pokemon, although it simply got me into anime and I never watched more than three episodes of it. The Valkyria Chronicles anime got me really into anime.

I suppose as a kid it started with DBZ although I never thought of it as anime at the time.

My first true experiances with anime were Samurai x, Trigun, Initial D, and Gundam. They were all english dub and I would stay up till 12 to watch them on adult swim :( (from NZ so theres a 2 hour time difference)

I started with Pokemon and the Studio Ghibli films, but it was Darker Than Black that got me interested in anime generally.

It all started with Naruto, but probably what really got me into it was Death Note/Elfen Lied/Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, because these were the first ones I watched after Naruto.

My first ones were Sailor Moon and DBZ, but I'd have to say my first major fandom was Rurouni Kenshin.

I think it must have been Gungrave, or Fullmetal Alchemist.
Was in 5th grade and just surfing through some swedish music channel, and suddenly they started to show anime.
Got me really hooked.

InuYasha and Fullmetal Alchemist.
Fullmetal Alchemist being the thing that gave root to my anime searches.
Breaking it down to the Voice Actors, Op/End bands, directors etc. Any other anime that had one or more voice actors of the anime was another favorite. Perhaps another series that slightly resembled the anime had me going. (for example D.Gray-man)

Soon afterI broke off from it and if I liked another anime that had the same voice actore it was a coincidence.
Never regret something that once made you smile.

For me it started off with Dragon Ball (90’s somewhere), subbed in German sadly. Only positive thing is that I learnt some German from that.
But didn’t get into anime until I had watched Trigun (2003) which I borrowed from a friend, since then I’ve been hooked.

I don't know. I watched a lot of anime when I was a kid like:

Cardcaptor Sakura
Angelic Layer
Inuyasha
Dragon Ball
Pokemon
Doraemon
Shin Chan
Chibi Maruko Chan

Hmm. I think it's Pokemon as I still watching them now and I still love it!

Hmm well I don't think you guys would consider it an anime more like a cartoon is what most people say. But I see awesome cosplays of them in loads of anime conventions around the world. Its a show called The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon, i've seen every single episodes and re-watched it about 3x already, haha its because the storyline was so captivating and interesting and its the sort of show you'll never get sick of seeing on tv. Then my friend reccomended me to try watch "anime" which she said was similiar to the style of art in the last airbender. I started watching Rosario Vampire lol it wasn't really a good choice to start off into anime but I was like into Twilight and stuff back then haha (im not now) so I liked the name :D Yeah lame reason huh? At first the I was like dafuq? I was watching it with subtitles and it was a little fast paste for me I had no idea it was one of those pervy animes rofl But I got used to it in time, heck I even finished season 2 of it. So yeah from then on I started on the path of an otaku haha jks jks im not that bad haha XD

I watched Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ and the other stuff on tv as well...
Everyday after kindergarten and later after school on RTL II (a german tv program)

But I've got addicted with anime after watching The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi (Season 1), Lucky Star and Death Note. I think it was about 3 and a half year ago.
As a kid I didn't know this "cartoons" are anime.

One day my brother and I were playing Nintendogs on our Nintendo DS, he told me that he called his dog "Kyon", than I asked him why "Kyon", so he told me that this is the name of an anime character.
A few weeks later he offered me to watch The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi with him.
And I liked the series. After that he told me about Lucky Star and Death Note and I felt like watching them. Since that time I'm anime addicted.

I know this is a weird story

Lets see... Well as a kid I did not know that Sailor moon, DBZ, and Pokemon were anime so I really could not count them as the key factor. The real Anime that got me hooked was Inuyasha. Back in 2000 my I was staying over my friends house and he mentioned anime, now I was like "what is anime?" Then he pulled up Inuyasha on the computer and ever since then.. I was hooked though It was not untill later when I actually got internet access that I really started to get into watching it.

As many people in this thread, I watched anime like DBZ, Cardcaptor Sakura, Pokemon, InuYasha and some other great series when I was a child. I had watched a few Naruto episodes with my little brother too but I don't know why I just didn't care that much (and now Naruto is one of my favorite series, can't explain). But then I figured out that thing called anime. I started watching Chobits because of a friend recomendation. After that, I watched Fushigi Yuugi. Then InuYasha, InuYasha Kanketsu-hen... When I realized, I couldn't stop watching anime and found myself completely addicted to it.

About 4 years back my friend would show me episodes from Gundam (he's a really big fan) and later from Helsing. Back then He said I should watch the whole series, but I never tried. Half a year ago He recommended Code geass to me, but I didn't actually try it untill a second friend also recommended it to me when I asked him about it.
So it all started with Code geass.
(And I still haven't seen Helsing)

Bleach. There was so much fan art of Bleach characters on Deviant Art that it made me wonder what was so great about these (albeit hawt) guys? Something had to be pretty amazing to have so many people making gorgeous artwork of the same 'people.' So I watched the first Bleach movie, Memories of Nobody and was instantly hooked. Ended up watching the first six season in four days. Then I needed a break so I tried Full Metal Alchemist and it was downhill from there. :D

I saw Sister Princess when I was about 8. I'd been watching anime for years before that, but I didn't know that it had a name. Sister Princess was the first anime I watched where I actually knew it was anime.

Before that I watched Pokemon, Digimon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magical DoReMi, Shaman King, One Piece, Speed Racer, Star Blazers, and a lot more I can't remember.

Well, my first anime ever was Witch Hunter Robin. Rather dark for a beginner, but I loved it. Then I spotted Haibane Renmei at Blockbuster so I rented it out and loved that too. Shortly after came Fruits Basket. That was the one that really hooked me into anime, though as you can tell it wouldn't be right if I said that the responsibility lies on Fruits Basket alone :)
