You could say I'm pretty into sports anime. I've highly enjoyed all of the following: Hajime no Ippo, Cross Game, One Outs, Major, Ookiku Furikabutte.

So I've seen 28 episodes, and honestly, Slam Dunk's just way too slow and without much substance. The last five episodes with the fight with Mitsui in the gym was especially excruciating (really?! 5 episodes on just that nonsensical fight and the little anecdote on the past?). The comedy has its highs and lows, but comes few and far between the overdramatic still-frames we get every episode, and with so little movement in every scene. It's like I'm watching an anime in slow-mo. The romance is flat, one-dimensional, and empty. The games and trainings feel incredibly repetitive. The dialogue belabors on the retarded or absurdly obvious, elongating the show even more with fluff. I guess I just don't know what I'm supposed to be watching for. I mean, this is probably one of the most vaunted sports anime out there, getting an 8.5 on this site. Is it only due to originality? Legacy?

Did anyone else not enjoy the beginning third, but find it more enjoyable later? If so, when?

Update:
Just finished it, so I'll answer my own question. No, the show doesn't change, it's pretty much the same thing throughout its 101 episodes. After the first few episodes, there is absolutely no character development despite its humungous length (i.e. Sakuragi is always the same Sakuragi, and Haruko, Rukawa, Akagi... everyone is static from beginning to end). As for comedy, Anzai never fails to crack me up, but everything else is pretty flat, especially Sakuragi's retarded thoughts and antics. My advice would be to keep your mouse on the seekbar to frequently skip through belaboring dialogue, unnecessary flashbacks, and the general lethargy of the show. That way, it's at least watchable.

I'm fairly sure if you're not enjoying it very much 15-20 episodes in, you're not going to enjoy the rest.

Yeah the thing that i hated was that the main character never changed, in the middle of the match he would hit his head on the backboard. I was looking forward to seeing his potential, but it ended with him luckily making a shot and everybody looking at him in awe.

I don't enjoy sports anime as much, and according to ChrisVarick's review, this series is targeted to an audience that's not too familiar with basketball. I'm enjoying it so far, but some parts do feel dragged out. The romance is so-so as far as I'm concerned and I don't think the anime pays any importance to it, but the games are enjoyable IMO. Sakuragi is definitely changing/improving. The humor is good too.

Different spokes for different folks.

I'm almost done, a few more episodes to go. And I can't say my opinion's unchanged. The later episodes were actually slower (you could say the pacing got worse). Might it be because it got closer and closer to the manga? Nonetheless, it's still definitely worth watching despite the rate it's going. I might be giving this series a 7 or 8 at best.

yeah i've watched it a couple of times, but the main character's clumsy nature just pisses me off, I expected him to get better and the top of the team by the end you know 101 episodes is a lot but he is the main reason that i would give this show a 7.

I hate necroing but all I see thru the Kuroko and SD threads is you bashing SD and touting mighty and high KnB. They both have highs and lows.
You really expected a COMPLETE novice who hadn't TOUCHED a basketball in his life to be top of a team with players of Akagi, Rukawa, Mitsui, and Ryota? Please.
They both have dumb things about them. I prefer SD more than KnB but thats because it has a more realistic feel to it instead of having super powers.
Both are fine to watch one isn't "better" than the other. You might like one more but, in no way shape or form is KnB better than SD.

I'm guessing you are Daimyo's alt(account made today, nothing on it, have doom in the name, likes SD, etc). And since I see you as that I'll give you one post(because I made that post years ago so I might need to clarify in case someone else reads it) but don't expect me to respond.

First of all I've maybe posted in 3 or 4 threads about Kuroko and Slam Dunk. This one isn't even about Kuroko nor have I even mentioned it in this thread. I also am not really touting Kuroko, I think it's a good sports anime but it's definitely not my favorite. It's just that Slam Dunk is almost bad compared to it.

Second of all, I might have said something about being the top of the team in my past post but I don't really think that now nor am I sure I actually meant that back then. He doesn't have to be on par with them but he could at least get better, he could at least not hit his head on the backboard ever match, they could have at least made him grow by the end. But he didn't, I can tolerate that for a while but the truth is he could have grown but he didn't. It felt like the anime was for nothing, nothing changed, he didn't, they didn't win the tournament or whatever, he never got together with the girl, etc.

I think Slam Dunk has more dumb things.

It sounds like you're saying Slam Dunk is better here even though you said one sentence earlier that one isn't better than the other. Is that what you're doing?

As a player I feel like Sakuragi's growth was actually really well done. As a person, however, it was nonexistent. I loved Slam Dunk otherwise but I got tired of him when, even 100 episodes later, he remained 100% convinced he was "TENSAI!" and refused to pass to Rukawa no matter how bad things got in the match. Also his whole ego of "I'm doing nothing wrong, the rest of the team underestimates a genius. HOW DARE THEY??? HEY POPS LET ME IN THE GAME (slaps flabby chin)."

But yeah, that and the fact that Slam Dunk overused the same jokes in a cycle every other episode was another glaring shortcoming. I still enjoyed the hell out of it, but Slam Dunk was riddled with its own cliches and tropes and people who call KnB out for that are just blind to it.

I strongly recommend the manga, too. The anime ending was more for Sakuragi himself while the manga ending shows how important he was to the team

I made this account to ask about a song in a different show. I just said I preferred SD to KnB. Both are good. I just like SD a little more because its somewhat more realistic. Hanamichi does improve as a player but he is big headed thru the anime, yes. The anime isn't finished. If you read the manga he does grow as a person. It stopped before the story finishes.
