It started so simply and yet it's amazing how much things snowballed so quickly. The great thing about this movie is minus the whole sci-fi aspects i.e. time travel, everything is so natural and normal. All the characters are believable people and not just following a character type, the situations all seemed natural and plausible.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!

This was amazing! As someone else said, the way it snowballed was done really well and it even made me sad at the end XD
Awesome, one of the best anime movies. 9/10

Actually, if it wasn't for this actually being rather serious, I'd kinda root for a "Luke I am your father!"-thingy, but in this case it'd be "Chiaki, I am you mother!" : D
Or actually... If so, it'd probably be "Makoto, you are my mother!"
Oh but don't mind me, I'm just.. Uh.. Making no sense, as usual : D

When Chiaki went to hug her instead of kiss her, this was my first thought as well. He knows something that he's not telling her. Although, he did ask her out before... lol. Gotta love Japan.

I do wish the ending would've given a little more details, even if it isn't revealed to Mokoto (i.e. showing Chiaki in the future). It's weird, because if he had never said he would see her again, there wouldn't have been an unresolved issue.

I was immersed throughout most of the movie, but I absolutely hated the ending. Absolutely hated it.

I was ready to give this a 10/10 before the last 5 minutes too.

Good movie, loved the plot, had enough story to keep me intrigued and as well as good pacing. I believe the "Time Jumping" could have been explained a little bit more thoroughly and I felt that the ending didn't make too much sense in the way the story was progressing beforehand. Overall, I'd rate it around 8.5-9/10 as it was beautifully made.
Will you be able to do.... what must be done?

Anyone agree that this movie kind of took a nosedive at the end?

Other than that, not bad at all :)

I just watched this for the first time in a little over 3 years, and... I was disappointed. I was truly in love with and fascinated by this story, and cried about Chiaki leaving, but this time around... I feel so ashamed to say that I thought it was a bit melodramatic. Dx I'm mad at myself for not loving it like I did before, if that sounds weird. For some reason my downloaded version's audio and video sync-up was off, so maybe that contributed to my disappointment. I'll try watching it again tomorrow online or something...

I dunno. I remembered things differently too. I for some reason thought Kousuke like Makoto or vice versa, and that Makoto had to try and save Kousuke from the accident several times... Hmm. Well, I still love it for the heartwrenching romantic drama and the craziness/drama of the leaping and what it caused.

2011 Rating:
4/5 Story (hated how it dragged on in some parts... built up to an ending based mostly on conflicted romance, which I do love, but when there's some hope that it can be worked out later on... and I don't think Chiaki and Makoto will ever end up together, unless*)
4/5 Characters (Makoto ugh... but she was just a foolish kid, so)
5/5 Animation (simple but perfectly so)

*I have a serious hunch about Makoto being the Auntie Witch. I'll post about it elsewhere.

Also, when Chiaki leaped, how did Makoto regain that leap? If they could regain leaps by leaping, then shouldn't Makoto have unlimited leaps?

That was the thing that made me say "what the fuck? This makes no sense". That thing along with the plot-holes and the somewhat disappointing ending are what makes me give it an 8 instead of a 9.

It was well animated and had some exciting moments. For a similar plot I liked The Butterfly Effect more, though the mood is entirely different. However, the ending is still messing with me. Why can't Chiaki just get another time leaping device after the end and come back? If he's that worried about screwing up the timeline, why'd he stay in the past in the first place? Ignoring that, if it is possible for Makoto to simply wait for time to pass normally and meet Chiaki again, that means whatever horrific disaster that causes Chiaki's future occurs during Makoto's lifetime - probably even a few years after the film. Not a happy ending, reunited lovers or not.

Ok maybe someone can help me here. I am totally baffled by the laws of time travel in this movie. I know I should probably be turning off my brain and just going with the romantic subplot, but I'm having a hard time doing that with the amount of nonsense being thrown at us. Is there anyone here who could help me understand how the time travel works in this movie?

"It's not rare. many girls do it your age" What a staight up GOOD lie! God i can't say how much i like this movie. It started out funny and all but when traveling back in time got serious and dangerous i sorta had that "why did you do that?" expression almost wanting to stop immedietly to stop the maddness. Good thing i did not stop!

I got that satified feeling at the end where you never which for a continuation at all. The animation was astounding with the characters to remember for a long time to come.

Not completely satisfied with how it ended, but I'm still giving it a 9/10 it was a very entertaining movie. I loved how the fate of the world didn't revolve around the ability, it focused on everyday things (well, apart from the whole bicycle thing). Makoto's character was well done, a good person with flaws, who tries her best and cries when she has to, but doesn't go overboard (I rarely find MCs who do not have at least one thing I can't stand in them). The comedic elements were funny too.

I hate Bittersweet Endings!!! This isn't a good ending, Chiaki is Back to the Future, Kousuke has girlfriend(I suppose) that can't play baseball(she's ruining their game) and Makoto(Nice boat ;D) is Alone Ever After:

My face near the ending:

In the end I give this movie 9.49/10 (rounded down to 9/10).

No need for them.

Good storyline, characters, touching soundtrack (especially ending theme), and of course, time leaps...

this was a really good movie! It was funny in the begining then it got really sad close to the end. i almost wanted to cry when Chiaki was telling her about why he came to the past and how much he enjoyed being Makoto's friend. the sad stuff was really powerful.

Someone told me to watch this about 2 years ago and somehow I never managed to see it. After finally watching it, I'm slightly frustrated with myself for taking so long.

To be honest, I really liked the ending. I wouldn't have liked it much if Chiaki had decided to ditch his own life in the future in order to stay in Makoto's time. With the ending as it was, all you can do is hope that somehow, someway, they will eventually find a way to be together. I think it's wonderful.
