In my opinion, being "brave" is very closely related to being narcissistic.

The teenagers of today try way to hard to stick out and be different for no other reason than to get attention. The otaku culture in the west world is a perfect example of this and the main reason why I dislike that kind of people.

I say the guy had courage, it can be hard to go out and not care if people stare or yell at you. It sucks if your on your way to a con and people freak out on you. But if he really had no reason than I guess he's just oblivious.

There's nothing wrong with cosplaying for an event. But you don't have to arrive in costume.
There's probably somewhere you can change and get ready. (Probably... I don't know, I've never been interested in the culture)
Cosplaying at a convention or event is not the same as cosplaying in real life.
You have to adapt at least somewhat to reality. It gets sad when people try to be something, or someone, that they're clearly not.
You are not a ninja, don't dress like one. Just like if you are not a police officer, you don't dress like one.

And my opinion is that if you're going to do something, do it well. If you're going to half-ass it it'll only be embarassing, and there's no point it even doing it at all.

Examples of how you do it, and how you don't.
Right way.

If you were to ask me to do some cosplay I would refuse, not because of the shame, but because I wouldn't see any of point doing it.
Since it's all a fictional thing and not something that happens in real life or exist in real life.

But if I or someone were to do it it would have to be done in style/ showing respect to your fictional character by actually trying to be that character within the steps of:

Use the materials that looks natural / be natural:
http://sp3.fotolog.com/photo/51/50/89/micosplay/1249098628980_f.jpg <-- Using that extreme color and fake mustache really makes YOU Mr.Satan

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2056/1949153956_087a7b364b.jpg <-- Perfect! No fake Mustache, no extreme colored cloths (Might be but at least not the same level as the other one).
And that really is the MAIN key rule for it but also another one:

If you aren't that gender or in fit for the cosplay character, don't cosplay it until you are:
http://images.encyclopediadramatica.com/images/7/71/Stupid_nerds_29.jpg <-- Not in fit( but the body structure is not good or ok but not awful for it) and not.. shaved..

http://th01.deviantart.net/fs51/PRE/f/2009/296/7/3/AX_09_Tissue_Hime_5_by_Neo_Crisis.jpg <-- Is in fit (Good body structure), shaved.

Because it wouldn't be so funny if someone were to dress like you, act like you and doing it poorly.
Since no one is forcing you nor going to be proud of you because you came in here dressed awful and starts pretending you are an ouji in your dress.

So this is just a quick story about today and when I was on the bus. So I was on the bus today on my way to my class, and we were nearing my stop. I had just been reading my book, and so not paying much attention to the people who had come and gone at different stops. So, as my stop approaches, I get up and walk towards the end of the bus, and holy shit I noticed that someone had gotten on the bus, and was dressed up as Itachi from Naruto. He had the coat, the shoes, the hair and even the head band.

Now, you know at first many peoples reactions would be to laugh, or call the dood stupid, but you know what, thats not the thought that came to my head at all, the thought that came to my head was "Damn that is one brave move." How much courage did it take this kid to put on that gettup and get on the bus. How long had he thought about it. But in the end, he was able to do it, he was able to put it on and get on the bus to go wherever he had to go. And you know what, I applaud him, because as I said, it takes real courage to dress like that and go into public, knowing people will stare.

I applaud him for having the courage and being able to go through with it, for not chickening out, because how many of you would have the courage to dress like that and go into public?

If anyone thinks anime fans are stupid its because of idiots like that who dress up as cartoon characters even though its not Halloween. I probably would have called him a weeaboo retard if I was in a pissed off mood or just ignored him hoping that no one thinks thats how anime fans behave.

I would not personally do this because it would require too much effort (and money if we're assuming the costume is bought) to put together/do, especially when I'm going somewhere as I like to cut things to the last minute when I know for sure how long transit will take me. That, and I believe that Naruto is a pretty bad show/read and dressing up as a character from it would be somewhat nonsensical since I have that view.

I don't believe it's really an issue of "brave" and "expressing yourself" either. I think whoever this guy is just thought that Itachi is the coolest thing that has ever existed in the history of mankind and that he would (or does) look like the shit dressed up like that. Unfortunately for him (and perhaps fortunately for mankind), he in fact simply looked like shit.

I don't have the desire to dress like that in public but furthermore I would feel like an idiot if I did. I would be equally embarrassed to be seen with someone dressed like that in public. It's part of the reason I haven't gotten involved with any anime clubs down here because everyone comes across as a total Otaku. The only thing I imagine most of us would have in common is that we like anime (and maybe games). Then again, I'm 30 years old and have only watched anime for about 3 years. If I had been interested in anime at a younger age I might have cosplayed. Now it feels childish though.

I dont agree with it, but then again nowadays there are anime/manga fans and then there are 'Naruto' fans it seems, like an off branch of complete obsession or dedication.

Again for me no different than someone going around saying 'desu' or 'kawaii' all day.

Still that being said I wont knock on him just because none of the people I know or even family know of my 'hobby', so either call it bravery or just not caring about others, but I really am sure he thought he was the coolest kid on the bus, and thats all that counts.

Cosplayers in general are attention whores and do it because no one would pay attention to them otherwise.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

I wouldn't mind cosplaying ONLY if the cosplay is not readily apparent like for ex. Naruto/Bleach/Inuyasha suit. Many cosplay suits wouldn't readily be recognizable for most people. (like a Tohno Shiki suit and many other school uniforms) Depends on the looks. If the cosplayed character is normal, it wouldn't mind most, but any obvious suit would just be bizzare in my opinion, if it is in public.

Unless the costume doesnt't look like real clothing (and most unfortunately don't and I mean the quality, not the design) I dont mind people dressing up like whatever they want...
I hate people who think "Omg! he's not wearing what everybody else is! He's so stupid..." >:-(
If somebody wears something (anything!) that is different from what most people wear, there are always people saying its stupid... Until some fashion top model appears with a Gucci Naruto headband. Then it's gonna be Naruto everywhere.....
Stupid society... if anyone would walk the streets in the 18th century wearing blue jeans he'd be stupid. Why can't you just wear whatever you like without everybody staring at you??? Isn't the way you dress a way to depict your personality and tastes?? Why do you have to wear jeans and T-shirts to be normal??

Im sorry if I was a little of topic... If I had a really good costume that looks real I'd go out just to shout "wtf you lookin' at!!" at anyone staring like crazy...

Well-done cosplay is very beautiful and takes a lot of skill to make. Admiring people's cosplay is pretty much the only reason I go to conventions. Everything else at the con I can get cheaper and faster online, but it's a lot of fun to see people's interpretations of my favorite characters in the flesh.

This isn't much different from going to a costume party on Halloween. Some people enjoy expressing themselves through costume, just as others like expressing themselves through painting, dancing, music, etc.

I don't understand why so many people are outright opposed to cosplaying. It's not all Naruto and Bleach and Chobits, you know. I've seen some epic steampunk cosplays, for example, that even non-anime people would look at and say "damn, that's nice." It's not being a weeaboo or attention whore, it's a way to have fun, which is what anime cons in general are about (just anime-themed fun).

Cosplaying outside of an anime con, though, is a little uncalled for...

Weeaboo: Fucktards that think Japan is the best place on earth simply because they like anime.

They express their FAIL AT LIFE attempts by going around saying random shit like "Desu, Baka, Neko, and Kawaii".

They further BASTARDIZE the Japanese culture by failing to eat their food with chopsticks, buying kimonos, katanas, and other traditional Japanese products.

Finally they embarrass themselves and everyone around them by HORRIBLY cosplaying characters that they don't look anything like.

In conclusion cosplaying is not cool, and should never be attempted unless you're Japanese and HOT!

I have personally somewhat cosplayed in public only because I ran out of clothing. But I used my more normal cosplays that looked more like regular clothing. Now to just randomly put a very awkward looking cosplay and go out into public I probably wouldn't do it unless I had a good reason to.

I've already gotten a lot of weird stares and rude remarks from people during conventions either by people staying in the hotel who aren't their for the con or by going to a place to eat. When this happens your typically with more people so it's not as bad but alone I don't know some people are crazy. I don't think it's worth the potential danger you might be putting yourself in.
Just give me your hand and I'll let you feel they wounds they put in me

This topic kinda made me angry. If you actually think someone isn't ALLOWED to cosplay because of their body types please do not even talk to me.

There's not a right way to cosplay. It's all about having fun. If you enjoy cosplay but still take it as a competition and judge people on their physical features rather than on the quality and the efforts they put in their cosplays then you don't get it. And you are being a douche.

Now about the topic in itself. I honestly think there's nothing wrong with going outside in cosplay. Why do you care ? They're having fun. Maybe you should reconsider how accomodated by society you must be for thinking that wearing something unusual is stupid.

It's most of the time a passion. Sure, there are extreme cases who don't see it the right way. And I can tell some only do it as a way to shine. But again, why do you care. If it helps them with their self confidence, that doesn't seem bad to me.

I'm pretty sure some people take cosplay way too seriously when I actually take it as an escape from the everyday routine. It's healthier than alcohol AND it's creative. The whole fun in cosplaying goes from sewing, finding a way to make your entire cosplay by yourself if you're passionated enough and then starting to play. It's acting. It's playing a role, literally.
