I'm not sure why but I've always found the subject of immortality interesting. So, with that in mind, I'd like an anime/manga (preferably manga, as I'd like to gain more experience in that field. But, either would work.) that has an immortal protagonist, a character, and, again preferably, actually has the subject as an important plot point.

Also, I don't give a damn if it's Seinen, Josei, Shounen, Shoujo, or any other genre. The only genre I'm not cool with is Yaoi.

Well,

Casshern Sins
for anime

and

Blade of the Immortal
for manga

and

Sandman and Fables
for comics

I found Casshern Sins boring, but many people enjoyed it. The others are very great though! especially the two american comics, if you're ionterested in that you won't regret it!

Immortality plays a very important role in all my suggestions!
I probably regret this post by now.

Baccano! is the best thing I know of, though it seems you've already watched it. If you haven't read the manga, that's definitely worth checking out.

(Btw, I can already sense people rolling in with recommendations for Kore wa Zombie Desu ka. Don't listen. :0)

Thanks for all the recommendations so far. I'd also like to add that I'd like for the recs to have some sort of romance involved though feel free to rec anything with the original post guidelines for sure.

Blade of the Immortal should fit even better now, there is romance, though mostly subtle between the main characters, and less subtle for some side characters.
I probably regret this post by now.

Manga

Hekikai no AiON
Franken Fran- not sure if Fran is actually that old or immune to aging, but she's definitely immortal in the sense that she isn't easy to kill. The manga is all about scifi biological oddities like immortality so it might still be of interest to you even if the immortality of protagonist is uncertain and irrelevant to the plot.
Eternal Sabbath
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia- She's already dead, but discovering who she was in life and what she's been doing since she died are pretty much all the manga is about.
Le Portrait de Petit Cossette- Again, undead.

and some vampires:
Record of Fallen Vampire
Vampire Knight
Tsukihime
Kurozuka
Blood Alone

I don't think that the "vampires" in Hitsuji no Uta are immortal. And for Tsukihime:

There's a reason why that meme exists. Read the manga.

@DrHouse You are right about the immortality. But I don't believe I made a manga reference for Tsukihime. If it was somehow implied, I apologize. BTW: You've listed a few titles I need to check into. Thanks!

Okay, to add onto the previous topic. How about anime/manga with reincarnation as a plot point? I'm already planning to read Please Save My Earth, so no need to rec that.

One of my favourite immortal characters would be Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood. While the series itself is not an anime, a decent tie-in comic was produced, so I guess it qualifies to be mentioned here. I haven´t read the comic myself yet, so I cannot comment on its quality.

Fantastic Children
Angel Beats!
Gantz (manga)
Berserk (manga)

they all feature some kind of reincarnation. But to tell you more would be a spoiler in each case .
I probably regret this post by now.

Dunno about reincarnation, but to nominate an underdog manga about immortality that has not been mentioned yet:
Meteor Methuselah (AKA Immortal Rain).

And also you should keep reading Hatenkou Yuugi. Immortality becomes increasingly important as the story develops, and is not eternal-young-like immortality, but MajinBoo-like, so expect some potentially... crude images. XD

Torchwood is excellent. I caught most of it on BBC America a while back but I think you can get it through Netflix. I haven't checked Hulu but it might be there or perhaps Xfinity if you have that in your area.

Grrrrrrrrr . . . you know, I wouldn't double post if I could edit my previous post . . .

Anyway, off the top of my head, reincarnation anime:

Air
Ayashi no Ceres
Haibane Renmei (sorta-kinda if you squint)
Mirage of Blaze & MoB: Rebels of the River Edge (Shonen Ai)
Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru (Shonen Ai)

Yay! Another Torchwood fan! It´s relatively easy to find recent episodes on youtube with an acceptable quality.

If you don´t have too much time to spend I´d recommend "Children or the Earth" which is a short and closed story which feels a lot like an OVA. In fact I was a bit surprised by the imagination presented by a simple live action TV show; this kind of darkness and deepness usually only occurs in good animes.

I was hoping that someone who has already read this would mention it, but Pheonix sounds like what you're looking for.

I like to do that whenever Tsukihime get's mentioned. I was just using your post as an excuse.

On second thought, OP, I read your blog on VNs. Just finish reading the Tsukihime VN. The manga's good but it's nowhere near the level of the VN. Although, I might be a tad biased as I really liked Hisui/Kohaku's routes. It had nothing to do with the meido, I just liked the sudden increase in the level of mindfuckery.

You might also want to try Ever17. It's not really about immortality, but immortality is related.

Drat. I always forget about the Phoenix anime and I liked it too.

@ DrHouse
I've actually already read, and completely finished, Ever 17 a few days ago. Great stuff, and a certain subplot in that game is what gave me the urge to check out some more stuff with a theme like that. I've just failed to up date my blog.

Also, I'll definitely be picking up Tsukihime again it's a great read. I keep hearing good things about the Hisui/Kohaku routes, which is what I've yet to do. So, perhaps I should start that back up before checking something new out.

Also, thanks for the recs everyone.

Here's one: Legend of the Legendary Heroes (Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu), it deals with devils and goddesses being reborn... The Manga is more developped than the Anime and so is likely better. It has nothing to do with Legend of the Galactic Heroes despite the similarity in names.

the Leji-verse anime and manga like Space Symphony Maetel, Galaxy Express 999 etc all deal with immortality as cyborgs/robots.

Sailor Moon's story involves reincarnation on more than one point. The final season (Sailor Stars) is a masterpiece that surpasses the rest of the series by far, but it's easier to understand if you've seen the rest.

Those are the only ones I've seen that aren't on your anime list >.>

You could watch Kakumeiki Valvrave. The MC is immortal and some of the other characters are too. Its also kind if sad too. There are two seasons by the way.
