Started a Portuguese book called "Teodora and the Spell Book", by Luisa Fortes da Cunha. It's about fairies and Portuguese folklore for kids. Will finish it today, and the next book in line is by Charlotte Haptie, called "Otto and the Flying Twins"
I'm loving this strain of kids books, even though they are not really well written or anything like that. I wonder why we let kids read these....
Well, meanwhile I forgot to update and read quite a batch of books. Here is what I've been doing on the past few weeks:
"O Peixe Azul" ("The Blue Fish") by Margarida Fonseca Santos - quite childish, but fun nonenthless. Not especially good.
"L'Isola del Tempo Perso" ("The Island of the Lost Time") by Silvana Gandolfi - I loved this one, really great. If you like young teen books you should pick this one, I wonder if there are more like it. It's about two girls that get lost and end up on an island where all the lost things are!
"Journey to the River Sea" by Eva Ibbotsom - Really great, I loved this one as well. Very well written.
"Teodora e o Caldeirão Sagrado" ("Teodora and the sacred cauldron") - More of the same crap.
"The Gallow Glass" by Brian Keaney - Honestly, I did not understand why this book waswritten. The story is not any original, it's not well written, all of it feels like a book that wants to be a movie but never could. My friend let me borrow and said "this book is completely tripped, you'll love it!", but it was just average. Not tripped at all.
A poetry Anthology called "Five Stars", collecting children poetry by Chico Buarque, Henriqueta Lisboa, Oavo Bilac, Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Gonçalves Dias (all Brazilian authors)
"Eu Chovo, tu choves, ele chove..." by Sylvia Orthof ("I rain, you rain, he rains...") - It's a play. I hated it, all of it was horrible.
"Wildwood Dancing" buy Juliet Marillier - I really loved this one to pieces, it was really well written and the story was really original, for a fantasy book. I had to control myself to not cry at parts (was reading during class) and all of it was full of emotions. I really enjoyed this book, I hope this author has similar works under her wing because I want to read more from her! Also borrowed from a friend.
"The Scarecrow and his Servant" by Philip Pullman - Great. Adorable. Fun. Philip Pullman is really good, I'm so glad I got this book.
"The Guardians of the Night" by Serguei Lukianenko (the original name is in Russian and has letters that my keyboard is missing...) - Really dark, but very well written (and very well translated too). My friend let me borrow only because she knows I like Russian litterature, but this was unexpectedly good. I often dislike the Fantasy genre, but this book kind of gets out the "fantasy" to become a reality and a social commentary inserted on a meta-world. Really good, I want to read the rest of the trilogy.
Now I'll start reading an Essay by Erasmo, which I'm trying to translate.... It's something like "Praising of Madness", but there are probably better words to call it. |
