| the opening 10 minutes were very unclear and tedious and, remembering the bad reviews i read, i almost lost complete interest but once a story got set up and going i got really drown in. the character design is amazing, it's so sad how clamp ruined their own style over the years. the animation movement is bad but that doesn't bother the story. i love the fantasy adventure style of the episode and thought the character archtypes were very unique for that genre. they were all very delicate yet powerful. to my understanding ashura is genderless, i totally saw him as a boy (which makes this a sweet shounen ai with a touch of shota subtext) but i was very upset when the english dvd translated the references to him as "she". nice episode. 6/10 |

| So is Ashura supposed to be genderless? The online guides list them as such, but the translation uses the pronoun 'she.' Is that just how it was westernized when it was brought over? |

Little Ashura was simply treated as a kid in the manga, at times people spoiled/cuddled him or commented on his cuteness but not once I recall someone calling him 'she' or dressing him up like a girl; moreover, the way Ryu and Kujaku teased him made it look like Ashura was a boy - up until the final reveal. Same issue with Kimera: androgynous characters in older movies/OVAs become feminine in the english version, to avoid any gay subtext. |
