Can you watch this show as a standalone story?

Hi!

Im not really interested in other Gundam shows and also have not really time either to watch them. But this one piqued my interest for its darker theme. So my question is as in the topic title..or will I not be able to understand the story and world in it?

Yes. This Gundam isn't connected to any of the others (aside from its second season)

You can watch Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans as a standalone series, The series doesn't tie into any other Gundam storylines or manga.

Absolutely you can watch it without watching the other series. To my knowledge a lot of gundam series are like that.

And I do recommend it’s a really good show

Yes, you’re more than able to watch this show without having seen any other Gundam shows. You will, however, miss out on some of the franchise’s inside jokes/character tropes that pop up in most Gundam shows (such as the Char clone), but that’s not necessary at all to enjoy IBO

you'll have conflicts of the past but rest assured that it's purely lore for this show unrelated to the others

(alot of the franchise touches on dark themes, the grey morality of war is an important focalpoint of many entries)
