It's somewhat true, but it's not entirely true but i fully 1000% agree with it, because i couldn't care less about the story i only like the artstyle and character designs, story be damned idc, i never paid attention to story in anime, i only like seeing cool and sexy characters do cool and sexy things for the most part.

And my only criteria for choosing waifus is: Does she wear a bikini armor ? Yes, instant waifu / No, not waifu. For which i made this diagram to categorize.

Most anime girl designs look appealing anyway, so I choose my waifus mostly based on their personality and behavior.

Anime are still fun to watch, so the statement is far from true.

Yea I can understand that. I think like around 2024 my interest in anime kind of died out and I just started focusing more on the looks of certain characters for the fun of it

@VabbingSips Yeah, that's the same case for me except i've been this way since 2012, ever since i exited my shonen fan phase and became and ecchi fan.

@VabbingSips i'm 30 yo, Yeah i agree ecchi peaked in the early 2010s and we're always still chasing the dream, but there have been quite the revival in recent years with really good shows, i recently enjoyed takamine and makina and yandere elf and fat elf ecchi anime so much, they're fun and enjoyable.

I hate waifu and husbando culture, but fortunately most people seem to not be part of it (at least people irl or that I know personally).

I may be deep into Husbando culture but I still watch anime for the plot - characters designs can entice me to watch something, but if I like it or not will depend on the plot. Watching something boring with pretty characters will still be unfortunately boring.

Kinda agree with this. Anime does have a tendency to be repetitive or have only minor differences. And not only within the genres – everywhere.
That being said, character designs utilized also have a tendency to be, well, "default".

Yeah I got to take a centrist opinion on this one. I would say it is true to a certain extent with many anime watchers, but there are still some of us that do want substance as well. Even better if it has waifus and substance! 😁

The art and character designs are like half of the fun of anime for me. I won't watch a show if it sounds kind of interesting but I don't like the art.

I disagree that anime is not fun to watch, but sex appeal of cute girls is always a plus.

I mean, I care about my old school waifus and husbandos too you know.....

Also like no, I honestly don't give a care about it, and modern or non modern, I watch shows actually for the plot. If i just wanted porn or a dating game, I would go and engage in media more suited to that. Anime is fine.

As for why others do, sure maybe people only care about designs, and sex appeal, rather than anything of substance. That probably is true for a lot of fans, however, that isn't a new element in this fanbase AT ALL. Old anime was very horny, and had plenty of attractive designs to sell you.
