How did Araki sensei get the idea of Stands?

I remember being weirded out by the sudden shift between Hamon and Stands in Stardust Crusaders. Not that I'm complaining though, since I think this was for the better.

But does anyone know why Araki sensei did this shift and how he got the idea?

If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

Pretty sure Araki himself mentioned somewhere that it's easier to make characters more dislikeable/hateable if they hurt animals, in this case it's with the dogs ;d

I believe the shift was requested by the editor on some level and although I'm not sure how much input he had, it's the reason why Hamon went away, as he believed it already did all that can be done with it.

As for the idea, it came from the manga "Ushiro no Hyakutarō" by Jiro Tsunoda and their guardian spirits, as confirmed by Araki himself in 2003.

Like stated before I think it was because he had believed he had already done everything he could with Hamon (personally I've always wished we got to see Hamon a little more than we did because of Joseph showing the potential synergy of stands with it) but I think he possibly just wanted a distinct way to denote characters like he does with Tarot cards and then with music. I imagine that after he chose a card/song the stand and character design came after.
How he came up with using Tarot cards for characters I don't know but it works very well, along with songs too, sometimes I've thought of my own stands using the music I listen to.
