Are any of you actually buying collector’s editions of video games?

They are pretty expensive, take up a lot of space, and serve very little purpose. And if you actually want them to gain value, you mustn’t even open the freaking thing, so most people collecting them end up with a messy stack of boxes of all kinds of sizes and colors. Is that something any of you actually do? If yes, why do you think this is worth doing? If not, is it something you would like to do? Or does the idea of a wall filled with eclectic and unopened video game goods displease you?

I'll buy one if I like the goodies and if I'm reasonably certain I'll enjoy the game. I can't remember if this has ever happened. I would have bought Final Fantasy X & X-2 on PS3 in hindsight, but I felt it was too much of a gamble as I had never played the game before.

Why is this post so biased and accusatory lmao? Like CEs did something to the OP lol

This may come as a shock to you, but some people.. COLLECT THINGS!!

WHAAAAAAAT?!

I KNOW RIGHT?! But here's the kicker, which may be a little difficult to comprehend, but they do this for this thing called "franchises" they love. I KNOW! WEIRD RIGHT?! :O

Now get this.. sometimes.. it's for GAMES. People LOVE.. video games!!!! I know, it's insane...! Me when I buy a CE for a series I been playing for 20 years:

And when you "collect" things you might want the special edition for some game franchise you love. The in-game perks are little bonus. You keep them on your big collectors wall. And you look at it now and then like ooh I am glad I have this, etc. Ooh nice, I have it, few ppl do (hopefully!). Pretty much the same thing with any objectively valueless thing you buy. It's all just part of the collection, the same way ticket stubs or rare promo posters would be for something else.

Some game franchises I also want to keep going I will support with the CE out the gate, I want it to do well.

The fact you've made it about their $$$ worth in the future (?!) kind of proves you don't get it at all. Who the fuck buys games to sell them off the future instead of some reasonable investment.

The real travesty is when a CE is lazy and sucks, Infinity Eggs:

And in general CE is often a little bit of a money making scheme lol. A tier thrown on top of the default to make more $$. But hey they usually have unique stuff so it is worth it if you like the game.. although the real collectors goods are going to be rare and obscure stuff.

I never did since the 3ds era mainly since here in the US collectors editions are usually overpriced while getting lazy artbook and cd.
Also, $60-80/game is already crazy.

@Shishio-kun
Those "Infinity Stones" look like they can be used to forge the Belt of Deltora for cosplay.

Are those physical only?

If there are sales in the eshop, sometimes I get games I'm interested in.

I need to have the habit of checking once in a while for discounts or sales.

Otherwise, I only buy physical copies for games that are considered favorites. I don't think I'm the type to buy collecter's editions.

I used to kind of be into them back in the day when I was hardcore collecting for the PlayStation Vita. These days though it's not something I actively go out of my way to get, unless it's a series that I truly love and I feel that the extra tchotchke is worth it. Which more often than not sadly it's not. Has most of the stuff I've acquired from collector's editions I just put away in the closet and forget that I own it. XD

I buy the ones which have impacted me and I will replay otherwise I would feel like I have wasted my money having brought something that will just collect dust on my shelf.

Use to in the old gen(ps3 and 360). Now they are totally worthless in the new gen since they don't even come with the disc but a code instead.

I'd always preorder the special edition for LEGO games, primarily because they'd come with the season pass. Most LEGO games had DLC content that added up quickly and the cost difference between buying the special edition with the pass packed in vs buying the pass when it was up by itself was different enough to be worth it. Also, in the early 2010s Amazon started offering money back when you pre-ordered special editions. So I'd order one, get money back and then put that money towards another pre-order with the same money back deal. I'd get a game, a season pass, a mini-fig, a big box to display and it would equal out to the normal edition price with free shipping.

In the middle of the PS3 days, I really liked the idea of the super sized deluxe boxes some anime games came with. It was basically the normal box, but sized like it was meant as an eye catch for a store shelve. Only ever got one, though.

For things I love yes, for example I just got the 15th anniversary edition of Subahibi (visual novel) and it cost me £400 including shipping and import tax and I’ve already read it so I’ll never actually use it but I like having it (I also have the 10th anniversary edition that cost me like £200). I also have a few Halo and cod ones from back in the day and I’ll probably get more when I can afford for certain games

All good points. I used to get collector's editions but have since sold them all. I have also sworn off buying anymore, even if I absolutely love the game. The boxes get annoying, the allure of the items get stale, and most the time the bulkiness messes with shelf space. Even if they are unopened I have found that most of them don't hold value at all which is the worst offender. I bought the Sonic Mania collector's edition awhile back and I literally couldn't even sell it—nobody wanted it. The only one I did good on with selling was the Fallout 4 collector's edition because the show boosted the value of them by a large margin.

I collect them. I have a dedicated space for my physical media, so it's not like they're in the way or anything. I like looking at a shelf of my favorite media and being able to actually hold the media I own. Looking at a steam library doesn't hit the same for me.

The people that don't touch their collectables are missing the point. I have 5-10 year old games & boxes that look and work nearly new, it's just about being gentle. And if you're buying as an "investment"... just buy some stocks or something. Media is meant to be enjoyed.

All that being said, some of them can be kind of lame. I have standards for the boxes I collect.
