Dedicated devices for music are pretty much a thing of the past, but when I was young everyone had one (or at least it seemed like it). The very first one I had was an iPod Nano (3rd Gen) when I was in my first year of middle school. To be honest, I kinda fell into the mindset that everything was crap unless it was an iPod. A lot of my friends had them, and owning a generic MP3 player was basically a good way to publicly announce you weren’t one of the cool kids.

But what about you, what was the first portable device you used to listen to music?

It probably was a portable cassette dictation machine. My mother had many that she'd secretly record conversations with during meetings with doctors and MPs, so I probably borrowed one that I found lying around to listen to some cassettes to😅
Not the exact one, but something like this.

I remember I had a Dinosaur songs cassette that I'd play over and over again on it.

Ig technically my mom's old Samsung Galaxy S3 from like 2012, though the only songs I was probably playing at that age were nursery rhymes and caramelldansen for like 10 hours straight lmao.

My family never owned a dedicated (portable) device for music but what we did own was this MASSIVE 90s panasonic cd/cassette player with a 5 cd changer with these absolutely gigantic speakers in the living room, bc I never learned to read and write at that time I used to memorize which cds I liked in my parent's collection by colour.

So let's say I wanted to listen my mom's dance mix with pitbull and cascada and stuff I'd put in the cd with the red case, if I wanted to play my dad's eric clapton cds I'd put the one with the grey case and the guy with glasses on the cover.

CD player, still have it btw :D,after that was a Sony Walkman and that kinda made me a Sony fanboy when it came to sound, first phone was also a Sony Erricson, then when smartphones came around we were never even middle class so I was using a ZTE Blade III,which when someone called would shutdown and it's battery would last 2 hrs at most...eh,around 2017 finally bought a Sony Xperia XZ and man I know I am going off topic but that was smth else, lasted me till last year when sadly the battery decided to commit seppuku, using a Xperia 10 V currently not terrible for a budget phone,as for headphones Sony's wireless ones have been my go-to ever since 2022

I see some individuals mentioning car radios, so I guess if those count then that was most likely mine as well. Other than that it was probably via my cheap third party Walkman I used to carry back as a kid. XD I later got a portable radio style boombox that I used to record songs off of various radio stations with. I remember being blown away at the time that I could even do something like that.

Some cheap generic MP3 player, but in like 2008 I got the iPod Nano (4th gen) which was my device for the rest of my high school life. I definitely appreciated the big screen because usually it was just one line to read the name of the song. Also played a lot of Solitaire on bus rides.

If we only count devices that don't have to be plugged in on the outlets, then some red Sony Walkman. Though I barely remember about it, I have more memories about portable CD players and MP3 players that I've used afterwards. They're still lying around somewhere in the house

A random CD player my dad got at a yard sale lol. I was always a generation or two behind when it came to the latest gadgets.

An AA battery powered pocket radio with an extendable aeriel that caught radio signals from radio stations. It also functioned as a radio alarm clock.

@MeanMrMusician

I was never able to get into those. I guess I just like to be able to choose the music I want to play when I'm in the mood. Still they were a lot cheaper back then I remember.

This little blue radio I got back in the late 90s. I did get a CD player in the early 2000s then though, and around 2005 I got my first mp3 player and once I figured out how to connect it to my computer and download from Limewire, it was heaven for me.

It looked somewhat like this.

(Not sure if it looked exactly like that, but I remember it was a portable cassette player and it was red.)

It was back in the nineties. Yes, I'm old. (´。_。`)

I respect your opinion as long as you respect mine.

I think I got my first portable tape player back in 1991. I remember jamming Michael Jackson's Dangerous on tape all the time on it.

That’s a great memory! For me, the first portable music device was actually a classic Sony Walkman — the one with cassette tapes. There was something special about popping in a tape and hitting play, even if you had to carry around a bunch of tapes. It definitely felt cooler than a generic player back then!
