THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Not going to lie, I found this episode slightly disturbing.

The surreal-style storytelling and everyone starting to lose their sense of powers is startling. I love the artistic style of the episode that shows the world fading more. The mass swords scenes also gave me some Fate vibes.

A very surreal episode imo especially with the black talking dog.

That episode was actually really disturbing to some point. Like that whole storytelling from Yamabiko was creepy to think. Everyone getting affected by an epidemic like that and the things growing upon them was scary. Now that thinking about that, that girl was actually pretty amazing with her powers, trying to help everyone who is affected.

Helping that War guy didn't go well for them and it only affected everyone even more. And, so the only one who was left there alive was the dog, Yamabiko. It was the world created by him after all. Felt bad for Yamabiko.

The BGM in this episode was phenomenal. The ambience really set the tone for the entire episode.

As for the story, I'm not going to pretend like I understood it, but none the less, it was an interesting watch. The Tsuda/Taketatsu combo sounded great and the world setting continues to be unique. The lack of Nozomi for almost the entire episode was curious too.

Yamabiko is in focus this episode, his own backstory of how he got here, 5000 years past. The creative artistry of his own class, with their saviour power "M" of the girl Kodama that could make their wishes come true, that sadly didn't last long from an epidemic. NGL, this backstory kinda hurts to hear though with the disturbing content.

Like Nagara's class though, they also drifted away into an empty space, but Yamabiko was the only one who felt threatened by her presence and being interrogated for his regrets. This crude-looking man (War) who is the cause of the plague who called Kodama ugly and whom wanted to kill God, an impact brought from a version of This World that Yamabiko made and can be materialized.

Yamabiko's class growing into old age, where everyone dies but Yamabiko in his dog stance. Such a story for the ages in moments of realization. IMO both Yamabiko and Nagara are similar to each other in terms of their humanity and powers, so it makes sense why both of them can think alike.

So where to next for the trio and Yamabiko? This episode felt very eerie.

At first, It seemed that this episode will be a filler... What a fool I was. Cried like a whiny bitch and enjoyed every second of it. The art feels more surreal and this world feels even more strange than before due to self-world of Yamabiko. Every episode feels like some kind of philosophical roller coaster of emotions/thoughts, which surprisingly suits the show. Also, this show genre should be psychology at some point... like shit. Deep.

Wonder how they gonna end such h-u-u-uge potential world and story in 4 episodes?

So, did Yamabiko turn into a dog because he wanted to be Kodama's pet so he could stay by her side? Is that what he meant by being "willing to do anything for her"?

I wonder how things are going in the arc, and how much time has actually passed since they launched.

I want to cuddle up with Yamabiko!!!

Kodama asked Yamabiko to tell her anything, even if it was nonsense while they were standing on the roof. I'm thinking what the promise was is to spew nonsense, because everyone wants to hear new information.

Ever since Yamabiko's character materialized in the anime, it's been really hard to follow what he says. Like, where is he getting the number 5,000 years from? I still don't understand why he's a dog. Maybe it's because he's firmly devote to living for a master that will tell him what to do.

This anime is the best thing ever. This reeks of originality. i don't post otherwise but the essence and the quality of what I am seeing right here obligates me do so. Kindly raise the rating.
This is completely distinct. It is history going on right now. I can see it inspiring a whole ner generation of mangas and animes. This thing is just surreal.
after so long a time, I can't predict the next thing, I hold my breath for the next thing; where my mind will tread. It's a journey I love the feel of and what more of as it inspires me like kino no tabi and fate stay/zero. This is better than them both.
I guess this is what genuine art is like, so refreshing and inspiring.

Thats yamabiko, the dog, not "war" guy. I imagine we will know who voices him when we get a translation of the credits

Edit: Forget what i just said, the VA is on the sonny boy official site. War is voiced by Koji yusa.

My interpretation is that he's got a similar power to Nagara, except instead of being an "observer" of other worlds, he can create one of his own. Like a shell he can retreat to. What's unclear is how the others got there, and whether he played any role in the plague. Seems that maybe by sheltering the others he did them a disservice, because the problems they were supposed to solve were only apparent outside of his shell world.

He submitted to the girl and self-imposed the role of a pet, after drinking her soup like a dog. He found that the roleplaying made him happy and stuck with it. Then there's a scene where he licks her wounds like a dog, and that's when he truly becomes one. Given he apparently created that whole world, I suppose he could set a rule like that too.

The beauty of this episode, though, is that turning into a dog is a really minor point, and the whole moral of the story was something else entirely.

Explanation for the story??

To me it seemed like the main idea of this week's story was that a boy stumbles upon a peaceful village that becomes engulfed in war. The leader of the village wants to boy to take her away from her responsibilities, but he doesn't understand and then becomes one of her followers. The ending scene of the graves looks more like a war monument than anything. I'm not totally sure what the message was but I'm content just having a clear grasp on the story for now

Agreed. Remember, there were the outcasts behind black curtains that also disappeared into their own dimension. Beginning to think it's not a coincidence that only the outcasts are doing this.
---

At the end, Yamabiko says, I just wanted to accept the light because I feared losing the light. Being able to see the light is Nozomi's gift. We know in a copy world, Nozomi is dead, just like Kodama—the light, hope in that world.

Nagara's true purpose is turning out to be saving Nozomi. But how and from what? I can't wait to know Nozomi's background story!

Holy crap that was an amazing episode. This is what I was expecting when thinking of Sonny Boy. Raw and surreal. Very good use of OST. If Sonny Boy keeps dishing out episodes like this, it's gonna be one of my all time favorites hands down.

So the disease is a manifestation of mental wounds brought about by Yamabiko's presence. Yamabiko develops a crush on the girl and becomes her servant, symbolized by him turning into a dog and lapping up her blood. The disease becomes worse and worse as Yamabiko could not tell the truth that she was ugly, that she had no hope of saving her people because he was blinded by her beauty as she showed her flaws to him. Goes to show that just saying nice things and ignoring constructive criticism of your peers in fear that you'll be disliked can be harmful. This mentality is very prevalent in adolescence.

Might need to rewatch this episode because it was so interesting.

Can someone explains why the girl transform him into a dog oO ? Ok he says that he want to be anything for her ? But why does she need to transform him into a dog, like what the fuck ?
I mean I know it supposed to be a symbol of his passivity and his servitude, but this make no sense of why she need logically to transform him into a dog, i mean it is good to do symbolic but if it doesn't make any logical sense it's stupid

I think the girl didn't transform Yamabiko into a dog, more like Yamabiko turned himself into a dog because of his complete and blind devotion to the girl.

It's been explained already above, but Yamabiko can create "Worlds" within his mind or "shell". He wanted to be anything for her, so he changed himself into a loyal dog, since the world they were living in was his own.

Good lord, this director has a knack for making a 25 min episode feel like a tedious hour of pure boredom and redundant pointless storytelling. We get it, doggy found his pixie maniac girl and couldn't save her world because "contrived plot reasons" and yet another conflictive character that may not even be relevant further in the story is being shoved in, with classic biblical passages to make it look "thought provoking".

These last episodes feel incredibly episodic/detached and pointless with just a mere smear of ambiguous plot relevance.

The power of yamabiko is to create world inside himself and the power to transform himself related to his feelings.
So the other classmate inhabited a world created in his mind, then Sensou invaded his mind and spread the disease by reflecting the feelings of yamabiko ? So why the classmate were inside his mind in first place?

Yamabiko created the world as a way to retreat from everything and buried himself in mud. Kodama's people migrated there and found him later down the line. He was immune to what War brought because he was not truly present in that world, he was dreaming it into existence from somewhere else.

War brought a new rule into the world that caused mental wounds to manifest as tumorous growths. Stagnation killed them.

Not sure if I follow this episode correctly.
Where were out trio going?
How exactly the plague came to be? Is it mental scars from other worlds or are all of these guys were in the world made by Yamabiko? (When he fell asleep atop the bones)If yes how did those guys got here in the first place? And how did the war dude got there? Tbh I don't even follow what he was going on about too.
Most importantly, I thought anyone who gets drifted to these worlds can't die? It was strange when those guys in Yamabiko's story died due to tumor.

Last but not least, where is Asakaze? He was with the group last episode.

The trio split off from Nozomi to explore other worlds with plans to meet back up. They "conveniently" arrive back with Nozomi once Yamabiko finishes his story, which causes discrepancies in their mutual chronology.

War admits to bringing the plague with him. The mental scars were happening in that world, but Yamabiko was not truly present because he was somewhere else dreaming that peaceful, easy world into existence himself.

War found it the same way Kodama and Co found it: By traveling. He brought death and suffering because that's his thing apparently. I think his weird shpiel about Yamabiko knowing him is supposed to reference that Yamabiko was looking for peace (and created his own but let it fall apart because he didn't understand stagnation is not healthy) but that part is unexplained. Maybe War will show up again later.

Killing people is supposed to be impossible because all the students drifting are static, but War clearly shows it's not *really* impossible. He's using a workaround.

Yamabiko's story/flashback was pretty disturbing yet, pretty sorrowful. We still don't know how Yamabiko turned into a dog, though. A dog normally symbolizes loyalty, so I'm guessing Yamabiko turned into a dog due to his absolute loyalty to Kodama.

A Yamabiko-centric episode this week and it was pretty unsettling and depressing. Seeing those tumors growing on everyone was disturbing. Another very interesting episode of Sonny Boy this week, kind of gave me Mushishi vibes a little.
