That's old, maybe something from the last 2 decades?

I've heard people saying Cowboy Bebop, have never watched it though.

I want to watch/read this so bad, but both the manga translation and the subbing of the anime seem to be stuck at around 40% through.

Claiming Cowboy Bebop changed anime is like claiming The Matrix changed Western film-making

Anyway, I would recommend Mobile Suit Gundam.

If not for that anime, the slice-of-life moe genre may not exist.

Cowboy Bebop-particularly how anime was received in the west, and it influenced a lot of which other shows came over here.

Revolutionary Girl Utena-the first major shojo/magical girl deconstruction. Madoka Magica would almost certainly not exist without it.

Just because Bebop didn't make much of splash in Japan doesn't mean that it's not very important to the US's anime history. There's a reason Cowboy Bebop still airs on adult swim (the channel that first aired it) over ten years after it first played it in 2001. And pretty much without stop, I don't think they've ever taken it down for more than 6 months, if at all. It's still a lynchpin for their line up and you'd be hard pressed to find someone over here who wouldn't agree to watch an episode at random.
Also, I am a big Sunrise fan.

Don't see what's wrong with Cowboy Bebop, it did open anime for a lot of new demographics. Even if shows before it did deliver a «mature» or «cinematic» experience, it still clearly showed to the masses how anime can be, and quite a lot of shows after it followed it's footsteps. Plus let's not forget this is a recommendation thread, the OP didn't watch it so this is pretty much a no-brainer recommendation

I approve of Utena's mention but sadly it was really underlooked so didn't do much influence tbh. Madoka isn't nearly in the same level and the similarities with it are super vague. It's still a stellar show that was ahead of it's time, but at the same time I didn't see anything after it that had such allegories and symbolism. It definitely pushed the limits of anime has a medium but I feel like not many series followed it's footsteps

Lain is also a show that pushes the limits of anime as a medium, it was the anime you would keep comparing other psychological shows too. I often saw reviewers mention how this is a must-watch and being part of a «big three» along with Bebop and Eva. Anyway solid recommendation as well

Anime's being translated by Saizen Fansubs at the moment, they're currently at 59/79. Their last update was on May 23rd, 2013. So I'm pretty sure they'll continue translating it. (Might take a long time before they reach 79 unfortunately.)
Also Takara Fansubs are translating the sequel Ashita no Joe 2, they're currently at 38/47. Their last update was on May 27th, 2013.
I heard Ashita no Joe 2 has been translated to 44/47 by some other subgroup (or maybe even further), but I can't say for the quality of the subtitles.

Also hasn't this thread been done too many times already?

If you are talking about post Evangelion it'll probably be:

- One piece (modern day DBZ, caused a shift in manga shounen towards adventure)
- Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (the series that started anime's descend into moe hell)
- Azumanga Daioh (popularized slice of life)
- K-On (ensured that anime can never climb out of moe hell. Also popularized anime music)
- Bakemonogatari (made SHAFT the force they are today)
- Idolmaster games (started all the idol anime crap)
- Fate/Stay night (made everyone take visual novels seriously)
- Code/Geass (caused a shift in Mecha series being dominated by Gundam-style robot porn)
- Uta no☆Prince-sama (made everyone take female anime fans seriously)
- (hopefully) Shingeki no Kyojin

Does anyone know which anime series killed hand drawn cell and started all the computer generated crap? The earliest I can remember is Gatekeepers.

fallnknight is completely correct. the anime is completely fantastic. It was/is a major hit especially on western shores. and do not forget that cowboy bebop is what introduced us to the famous "Sunrise Smooth" art style. as well as the terrific opening song "Tank!".

If you want to argue about how it was unpopular in Japan you have to realize something. Look at Japanese Culture in 1998 and look at it now. Cowboy Bebop had come out at a time when its content was considered pretty radical and controversial. Thus, making it less popular.

if you want to argue purely on the question asked. A 2004 poll in Newtype USA, the US edition of the Japanese magazine Newtype Cowboy Bebop placed second on the list (after Neon Genesis Evangelion).

In 2006, the Japanese MiniTokyo review claimed, "To say nothing more, it is a masterpiece, a genre defining series that has a right to be held in such high confidence. Not many series can do even one of the elements as well as Cowboy Bebop does, and even fewer can actually get every single solitary aspect of themselves to such a high degree of excellence".

and i couldnt have said it better myself :P. Sorry i just cant stand people talking down on Cowboy Bebop...lol
