Madoka, like others have said. That's the only one though, I'll usually just postpone a series because of the name. This is why I haven't watched Cowboy Bebop yet, even though I know better. Stupid reason, but I'm just not excited to watch it.

Since there have been quite a few replies to the thread that also addressed the name of the series itself instead of just how obscure the anime is, I'll say 3/4 of my top favorites were shows I initially dismissed as pretentious crap, harem crap, and boring old anime crap.

Yosuga no Sora: A link to the sky? Maybe the title did make sense even it sounds unappealing first.

Gundam SEED: Sounds like a dirty porno but it turned out to be a decent mecha show.

As for Princess Tutu, the combination of overly exaggerated girly title and general praise made me more curious (no, not in that way) than anything, so I watched it quite quickly after first hearing about it. It was worth it. The "Tutu effect" naturally rubbed off onto what order I decide to watch future series, including a certain western cartoon with colourful magical equine characters in it, that's on top of Fancy Lala (the director helped here too) and Heartcatch Precure.

Princess... Tutu. Could their be two less manly words? And yet it ended up being one of the most gorgeous anime shows I've ever seen. Heartcatch was good too, but god lord that opening ups the colorful/girly factor much more than the show itself.

Other than that: Bamboo Blade. I thought it would be one of those old timey shogun era affairs. I thought of Samurai Gun... I almost missed out on the K-On of Kendo.

Berserk.... best decision of my life lol. Also Hellsing, Gungrave, Vampire Hunter D and Death Note. Maybe a better question would be anime with strange names that ended up being good... like Cowboy Bebop, Boogiepop Phantom, Area 88 etc.

I would say Princess Tutu....except I was looking for something to watch and the name didn't actually register in my head as being ridiculous (nor did the premise of a ballet mahou shojo) until after I finished it. Clearly that part of my brain was malfunctioning that day.

I do have a manga example: Banana Fish. It only connects in the story in that the mangaka must've liked J D Salinger and named the series and the fictional drug within it after a short story, but yeah, it's a really good political thriller drama bromance.

Please Save My Earth sounded like pure hippie fare, and indeed one of the first lines sounds hippyish, but it quickly drops that in favor of scifi shojo epic.

Fruits Basket sounded like a silly name to me, I only finally read the manga like a year ago, but yeah, great stuff. Nothing to do with fruit or baskets.

Kimi to Boku.
- Looked pretty gay at first (though there are very very slight implications of yaoi), but imo it's a good show.
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
- Weird and unique are my first impressions. And I wasn't wrong, it's a weird and unique masterpiece.

From summer season, Tari Tari. I thought it was gonna be a weird ecchi show. The name turned me off but it turned out to be pretty good!

What else? Hmm. Can't remember. Names don't affect me that much...

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, what a weird title. But downright surprised by looking.
Berserk,I'm not too medieval. A total upheaval.
These two are my favorite. In the top of the top.I know it's not original.

When everyone started talking about Sword Art Online I kept thinking that it sounded really dumb from the name. Then I checked it out and it's not that bad.

Obligatory Durarara! and Baccano!, because what do those even mean? Also, needless punctuation annoys me. SO glad I gave these a try.

Also, Bakuman. Very misleading name - sounds like a generic shounen when it's really a slice-of-life.

Really, all of these misunderstandings can be cleared up by reading a couple sentence description, though, so they didn't stop me for long.

Princess Jellyfish (obviously I like the japanese title better) I was like WTF??! I know what I'm not watching.....but then I gave it a shot and I quite liked it :P

Fruits Basket also sounded silly to me but like Princess Jellyfish I decided to give it shot and ended up liking it :D

Junjou Romantica sounded inappropriate to me lol. Sounded like some sort of yaoi hentai lol.

I know now not to judge an anime by it's name alone lol.

Well in all honesty Death Note. Mind you I didnt read the synopsis either but when I actually came around to watching it like a year after it came out I was surprised I didnt give it a shot in the first place! Though doing that a few times now I give every anime a shot (Every new one that is) give them a couple of episodes and then decided whether it is my up of tea or not. With older ones I look at the Synopsis and if it interests me give it a shot and see if it does, some have some havent.

I've never had any expectations based on the name.
I've always at least read the synopsis first.

Me too I always read the synopsis but sometimes i read it and still i dont think its good thats what happend with Skip Beat! I thought it was a boring anime about a girl in a love triangle with two rock stars. When really she gets dumped in the episode, and shes never the same again. It was epic.
