| I like how they add romance to the series, but never fully develop it, and instead exploit it for comedy and/or character development. I find it hard to take harem romance seriously, though I don't mind it. It adds extra comedic buffer. Clannad is, of course, the single exception to this. It took its harem seriously and even made the MC dissolve it. I thought that was rather interesting. |

But I said anime as a whole. Those things you listed aren't unique to the harem genre and are rampant in anime as a media. | What I like about harems: -They're funny -Show's every heterosexual man's dream -Not hard or difficult to understand -They rarely have shitty endings -Fun to watch Every anime genre has its ups and downs, harems aren't any different. But there are some things harems require for them to work, like the stupid or oblivious lead. Of course he has to be oblivious to the girls, if he knew any of their feelings he'd choose one and that would be the end. Where's the fun in that? I really don't understand why some people come in and expect harems to have some type of huge, majorly complex plot in it, that's not what they're really about. But there are some, that actually have fantastic plots. Like Sekirei for example. Sekirei has an incredible plot and is still a harem. It actually has a much better plot than a lot of serious anime being aired today. |

| I love harems, generally because there is a girl in there for everyone's taste. Generally you will have: A Childhood friend A Tsundere A Glasses Girl with big boobs A Prude A Loli /Imouto type A Sickly girl I'm sure there are others but these are the categories I see most often...not that I mind...the girl I like rarely wins though so I can say that's something I don't like about them I suppose. Oh and the parents are "always" working overseas lol, it's rare when you see them =) Overall though I think they are great, I'm a fan of ecchi comedy generally and harems usually deliver this in spades. Sometimes it's overdone but most of the time it's a nice amount. |

| It is sometimes embarassing to admit, but many of my favorite anime either are harems themselves or contain elements of harem. I am a heterosexual female, yet harems appeal to me (not talking about reverse harem). I love bishoujo-style art (yeah, didn't say bishounen). The soft-cel shading of visual novel art is so beautiful to me. I love when every girl in the harem has a recognizable hair color. Even better when their actual interactions are entertaining. I've been a big KEY fan for a while now, so maybe that's where this comes from. I love it when harems add tragic elements to the story. I strongly dislike when the male main character is extremely perverted. I also don't like when the harem just exists simply for fanservice. While I can't place my finger on exactly one element that attracts me to harems, perhaps there are some things that I enjoy seeing and can often find in a harem. Namely, beautiful girls, atmospheric settings, sweet slice of life, attractive art styles, and that comfortably formulaic plot. I guess I gravitate more towards the drama-harem variety, rather than those that are for pure comedy only. And I love when there are hints of the supernatural... I know harems are sappy, corny, and what ever else people review them as. I just have weird 'taste'. My 'taste' doesn't consist of LOGH. I seem to have the taste in anime of a 40 year old, Comiket-going male: visual novel-based harems and magical girls. Go figure. |
