Wouldn't mind if this was based off of the PS1 game, even though I doubt that will happen. 😭

The milking of this franchise has bored me to death and I wish they could stop it. Also, this being manga accurate means absolute nothing, the 1986 manga is the only manga I ever cared for in my entire life (and the only one I consider a Masterpiece as well as the only one I own in both my language and japanese form) and I am the first one to admit it's intranslable in animated form. The notes of the author don't permit it, and the notes are an important element of the manga, as important and as interesting as the stuff going on in the comic. It makes zero sense trying to make a 1:1 adaptation of it, it wouldn't work. Same with the use of colors, with the manga works with an anime it wouldn't. It's just a really bad idea, if you ask me.

That's not necessary. This anime will be the first to adapt the original manga more directly.

@EcchiGodMamster Knowing science saru i have faith that they will keep the nudity but keep in mind GITS IS NOT AN ECCHI, even the manga has only extremely brief nudity and skimpy clothes but it is not as sexualized as we are accustomed to from ecchi shows, it's basically on the level of urusei yatsura. If you want something to our usual expectations from Masamune Shirow i sugget you check out https://myanimelist.net/anime/20261/W-Tails_Cat__A_Strange_Presence

The PS1 game was directly written by masamune shirow as an original accompaniment to the manga.

@RobertBobert no, you don't, all gits shows are self contained.

It's not a 1:1 adaptation, that is impossible, by that logic it would be a motion comic, it's trying to be more faithful to the manga is terms of artstyle, character design and color scheme (which were not respected in previous adaptations), so this is the first time a gits anime is a accurate to the source material as possible, and it does work, the 1997 PS1 game cutscenes already proved that the original manga art is perfectly adaptable to anime as is.

@ProudElitist why do you think they brought sci-fi novelist Toh EnJoe as scriptwriter and series composer for this project?

people keep talking about faithful manga adaptation but that was never confirmed by anyone, not even Masamune Shirow himself. just because you see some panels coming straight from the manga doesn't mean that it'll be a 1:1 adaptation. there's a good chance that this will be yet another loose adaptation, even if it is closer to the manga than any of the previous ones.

major looks sexy on the key visual hot damn

bandai namco as a producer is hit or miss but this time with ghost in the shell they hit hard
i will never forgive them for how they treated blue lock and one punch man anime adaptations though
although since this ghost in the shell can only be 1 cour since they are following the manga they have given enough budget for it being a short run

@tchitchouan I was re-reading the comic a few minutes ago (the copy of the first italian translation I have, where they stupidly removed some of the nots because reasens), it's literally impossible. Even the introductions to each of the chapters are an essential element of the manga because the introductions are filled to the brim of the humour of the author, which is something the animated adaptations never got. I have zero idea how the ps1 game was because I never cared of any console outside the N64 I used in 1995-1996 circa, but still manga in hand it's an operation that wouldn't work period.
Also, on the erotic parts, let's say Shirow kept himself for Man-Machine interface (the only comic I will NEVER SELL even under torture, of which I own the first italian edition ever, because it's the comic I've kept with myself for longer time, 22 years at this point) and for the following works of his, where he goes 100% hentai. The lesbian scene was also drawn because he didn't like seeing butts of men.

@ProudElitist So, what exactly are you trying to say? that a faithful manga adaptation of ghost in the shell can't work because of missing introductions or what?

@tchitchouan that is a completely different medium and the quirks Shirow used in the the manga are untranslatable in an animated form. They work on static pictures on paper, on the video they wouldn't work because not only they would probably bore people out of their mind but the action would continuosly interrupted. Or you want to tell me that, by owning not one version of the 1989 manga but two as well as Man Machine interface, having read the entire series from front to end and having watched all the animated works based on this series (last shitty movies of Arise and crappy 2045 permitted) as well as the rest of the animes based on the works of Shirow I don't know what I'm writing?

@ProudElitist Would you mind giving examples of quirks that Shirow used in the the manga are untranslatable in an animated form ? is it like how Araki often adds blurbs on location and stand stat powers but that can easily fixed by a narrator or a an eye catch so i don't what are these kind of quirk, is he using special page layout techniques or things that couldn't work in anime ?

@tchitchouan the quirks are mostly his neverending and ultradetailed notes. They're an important part of the worldbuilding and sometimes - not always - they give direct context to what is going on in the vignettes, or give his personal thoughts about specific topics like warfare conducted throught the use of medical wastes etc. etc. etc. You remove those, you remove half if not more of the content of the manga. Those notes cannot be translated in animated or live-action form because if you had a narrator explaining you what is going on onto the screen constantly everything would stop and people would be bored to death. In the manga, on the other hand, they function without any problem because the action is static and they accompany well the vignettes. If you haven't read it, read the manga and then you will see what I'm writing about.

@ProudElitist Ah i see, so accrding to you the problem is that the manga has additional valuable exposition that does not translate well to the anime form and without a crucial piece of information might be missing which could be a problem, but as i said they can always add them in the form of eye catches in between intermission or scene transitions.

@tchitchouan You never read the manga, did you? they're too goddamned long, sometimes mixed inbetween the vignettes themselves. Shirow is a person with a tendency to write long-ass notes overdetailing everything. He did it in the 1989 manga, he did it in Man Machine interface, he did it in Appleseed, he's just a thing of his. Making eye catches or scene transitions of ten minutes wouldn't work, it would bore people out of their mind and it would stop the action to an insane degree. In facts, the action would completely stop. Read the manga and then consciously tell me those notes are translatable into anything other than a comic book, it's literally impossible.

@ProudElitist I see you point and i honestly don't have a solution to it, it would be interesting to see how science saru solves this dilemma, i think they will just cut them completely so as not to interfere with the pace of the show or the action, guess we're just gonna have to wait and see how the anime does it.

My first impression is of a lighter cyberpunk tone, so that will be something new and fresh for this franchise (to me anyway).

Of course, it's debatable how commercial this looks/will end up.
