It’s pretty insane how much the prices have increased.
I could see this leading to a temporary collapse in the gaming industry, stagnation in electronics as a whole and massive issues with the economy.

That could be a good thing in the long run, most games now are very poorly optimized. Perhaps it could even break the UE5/Unity engine duopoly that even the majority of indie games have fallen into.

They were already stagnating, just look at how massive graphics cards have gotten in physical size even before the AI bubble.

I don't care because I am still using a laptop from over 10 years ago with Linux, keep on using your defective Windows operating systems, just saying.....
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

At this point I'm just hoping AI never becomes profitable, and they quickly run out of venture capital money.

Computation-dependent progress won't happen as fast as previously estimated.

RAM and SSD prices are on rise due to AI data centres hogging them. Normally big tech companies would store data long term on large magnetic reels and HDDs for more frequently accessed.

Disney put a billion dollars into OpenAI so it may be difficult to stop

@traed Even Disney has only a finite amount of money, and the cost of AI basically goes up exponentially, and without a technological breakthrough the current LLMs have a good chance of plateauing out. Disney flopped quite a few movies for unrelated reasons anyway, so those will eventually add up, since there is no signs of a course correction.
The worst case scenario is the government deciding to bail out AI companies from tax money...

I ain't afraid of no RAM shortage. I've just gotta find the correct linux distro and build to keep using my old RAM (i hope) T.T

Short term
Bump in consumer buying of consoles/tech that is not effected by price rise.

Long term
Price increases in tech and smaller profit margins outside those who create such overpriced ram.

Tbh I think this is artificial scarcity in effect, but the suppliers have no reason or regulation to appease consumers over profits. Monopoly at work

This isn't the first time prices went up. They'll come down again in two to three years. Maybe five. As soon as all the parties with bottomless pockets have fulfilled their needs.

@DesuMaiden 10 years old is very reasonable desu. But If you get a 20 years old ThinkPad X Series with Arch in it you will be Godess

I'm not a console gamer, but I have heard that the next generation of consoles are being delayed heavily because of RAM shortage. As for PC which is what I use, RAM has gone up so much in price, it's actually insane. This will definitely create issues in the gaming industry.

People have become dependent of PC and now that technology is absolute main stream they will probably keep the high prices since some people are already buying it (worse scenario).

What will happen is that some new actor will come (I cant remember where I read it, but a big hardware company had announced they will enter the ram industry in 2026), and hopefully help a little to not making ram unpayable.

On the other side, there are already rumors that this current gen of consoles will last longer because releasing a new console will cost more because of ram + new tech. Which Im totally fine, this gen practically started just this year 2025.

Now the real question is: What will happen when the AI bubble explodes and all this high prices and tech companies lost its values?

All I can say is I am happy invested majorly into RAM when I made this PC build last year, it won't affect me now but will in the future as GPU prices never came down, if people will pay the price why would corps lower them.

You don't need a lot of RAM to post on social media/forums and stream/download videos from the Internet btw. As long as you don't play pc games, you don't need a powerful computer.
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

@KenaiPhoenix

The problem is that now all critical business run with a cartel/mafia mindset. They sit down for a zoom meeting with their competitors agreeing to inflate the prices now that the consumers are already hooked and in addition they agree to go after potential future competitors. They will bribe politicians or whatever it takes.

That's why you will probably never see a definitive cure for diabetes or cancer. They rather research temporary solutions to turn the patients' life into a paywall subscription plan where you live as long as you keep paying the subscription to extend your life some additional months. Then Don't pay and find out.

You will see this mindset with big tech pivoting to "computing as a service" instead of you owning your own machine. You will own nothing and you will be UNHAPPY but "watcha gonna do b*tch anyway?" (the pefect mafia business).

@Tokikoo Well... yeah

Companies have discover that it is better to have subscriptions than actually sell stuff.

This is a more silly example, but Nintendo could very well just sell the emulated games, like how they did it in the Wii, but selling the service that can cut your access to the games is way better than just selling one product.

So yeah, we are fucked, unless people wake up and stop this crap. And I have nothing against subscription btw... but many are just a scam.

@KenaiPhoenix Yeah but people think that "waking up" and doing "something" is switching their profile pic to clippy
