As yet another quality animation that suffers from scattered understanding and poor plot explanation. If the Chinese would only work on dubbing their works. The language just isn't suited for western ears. It lacks the nuance that can be visually imparted into animation in my opinion. That said, this is a visual masterpiece that should only get better.
@Ranchpig Are you being racist right now? The Chinese language is actually extremely fast which means that the subtitles are extremely fast. They can't slow down the subtitles or the subs get desynced from what's going on in the episode.

Also everything is clearly explained as long as you actually pause and read the text.

At this point i'll treat season 1 as 'Introduction to the world of LotM'....

Like, seriously.

1st episode : Klein + Nighthawk Introduction
2nd : Beyonder Introduction
3rd : Secret Order Introduction
4th : Aurora Order Introduction
5th : Demoness Sect Introduction

Did you see it? Yes, a whole fckin 1 organization per episode to introduce

I won't be surprised if they just introduce Ince Zangquill near the end of season.... I hope not

What a chaotic mess of directing here. The scenes feel so random, like they skipped 69 chapters of the book just to cram in a fight for the episode. That feeling never leaves you.

It’s cringe listening to opera in Chinese, and I definitely don’t want to repeat that experience ever again. What, the ship sank a week ago, and they’ve already written an opera about it with a cat on stage and invited the MC and the police captain?

I love the moment where it’s like, “I had to find out why they committed such atrocities!” and they show a literal dead seagull. Oh, the villains… I get it’s Chinese censorship, but it looked hilarious.

“We need the help of the ‘Punishers’ and the ‘Machinery Hivemind.’” Ugh, time to meet yet another gang of mages. By the way, they didn’t even show them in the end. Just name-dropped them for the sake of name-dropping. Guess they just wanted to share some cool names.

Why the hell do they keep a black market behind a massive five-meter iron door? So customers can’t even get in? They didn’t even show minimal security at the door, and it opens with just three knocks—what’s the point? Just another way to burn the show’s budget on nothing? If it’s a secret market, that door draws more attention than anything else, and when it opens, it probably makes so much noise it wakes up half the street. The market’s even protected by an equivalent of the “Nighthawks” from another church, so why are they hiding from anyone at all?

The psycho says “death,” the guy thinks, “So he knows I resurrected?” and the old man nearby goes, “Don’t worry, that’s just Monster, he’s got sharp perception.” Guess this hobo is familiar to everyone and just shoots blood from his eyes every day, no big deal. He must be super important to the plot and narrative, otherwise how do you explain his appearance amidst all the ruthless cutting of the rest of the story?

I don’t know why they crank up the music so much, but sometimes you literally can’t hear the characters’ voices over it.

They randomly show up at the market, randomly find the villain of the day. Did they divine it off-screen again? I thought they said a Seer doesn’t have combat skills, but then bam, the MC effortlessly pushes a loaded cart 10 meters.

Oh! Finally, the first steampunk thing in this anime shows up—just some steam pipes that everyone was shooting at for no reason while the camera panned up. Must be some hidden meaning you’ll find out about in 765 chapters of the book.

What, the killer managed to escape on foot from the police chasing him in a carriage, even though they knew exactly where he was? “It’s an evil organization where all the high-ranking members are women,” and in the very next scene, they just let all the women out of the room. Genius! The MC, on a whim, decides to turn off his divination as soon as they arrive, letting the cops handle everything. So shadow vision just doesn’t work on guys of a higher level? He was perfectly able to see people’s wounds before.

The MC moved into a fancy house with luxurious furniture in the city center back in episode two, but he’s still counting every penny. He looks like the ultimate cheapskate or an idiot who rented a place way above his means and now spends 90% of his salary on it.

Oh, those time skips. Sorry, viewer, no world-building or atmosphere today, and be thankful they didn’t just show you a slideshow with text about what’s happening.

What a powerful detective element! They hand the guy a censer, it spins and glows and tells him exactly where to go. Why didn’t he just divine it off-screen like in the last episode?

Guess it’s clear now why they skipped another 19,374 chapters of the book—to shove in another fight. Where would we be without it in this anime about mysteries and definitely not about battles?

So all this time, the guys were just getting beaten by some shadow clone while mademoiselle decided to do nothing and just sat there watching? Smart, smart. No way she could’ve tried to escape or help in the fight.

The captain’s definitely in line for a Darwin Award. He just said there’s a super dangerous level 7 girl powered by a god, and he solo storms the house to show off CGI effects. Brilliant plan. Guess everyone else found something more interesting to do at that moment.

And then a 3D train rolls by on 3D backgrounds. End of episode.

Honestly, I don’t get why anyone would watch this. Over five episodes, the events have unfolded in the most obvious and uninteresting way possible. The “detective” element is just a word—everything’s solved with predictions and magical trinkets. The visuals feel like a subcontract from Studio GoHands, with all those spinning 3D backgrounds and 2D characters that stick out like a sore thumb. Even the fights don’t look that interesting, often just static shots with flashy effects slapped on top. I really don’t see any upsides to this Chinese “masterpiece” so far.

They kinda glossed over the details of how these sequence potions work. Sequences can have physical requirements associated with "acting" the role which is necessary to "digest" the sequence and fully gain the powers. You can't wing it and pretend as it will just increase the digestion time while being dragged in. The scene with the lipstick was about adjusting and accepting the "acting" for the "witch" sequence. The final scene represents the full acceptance of "acting" her new female biology and using men to satisfy her lust.

Going on one of pathway with a gender requirement means you're pretty much stuck as switching pathways is extremely difficult and risky, especially for sequences below 3 which are very hard to reach.

@OrigamistToo a lot of this stuffs make sense. Some don’t make any sense even without the lore behind it. The main one is how they let all the women out of that building(and let them leave too) despite the fact they knew all the members are women… which means those women could’ve been members too. A lot of convenience had to be made to let the villain escape. Chased by carriages and yet outrun them, with enough time to ascend to the next sequence.

The steampunk setting seems to not matter in the series for now, you could make it the usual medieval isekai aesthetics and it would still progress the same way(unfortunately a lot of shows are like this. Same story, different aesthetics). Because writing a much different culture is more complicated. BUT I’M sure it will become important later.

Those are the only credible issues with this story. Everything else still tracks. I can feel the hate in your comment, it’s quite an amazing aura

@IoremIpsum12 It literally doesn't matter Internationally. Season 2 is already being produced btw. The only thing that matters is whether it is a success in China which it is.

Episode 5 for example has a 9.4 on Tencent video.

Obviously the Chinese are enjoying it far more than anyone International which is a good thing because nothing matters more to Tencent than their Chinese audience.

Huh, actually feel like I'm starting to get a hang of the world and lore based on this episode. But just a little lol

I see we have some really strong reactions in the comments here. Not that I blame everyone. There's still problems with pacing and lack of story explanation from the production side of it. (I don't blame the LN for this but judging the anime alone here)

I think what this series should have done was slow waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy down. Doesn't need to move through the story this fast. I realize this would mean probably barely adapting much of volume 1 of the book. But imagine if we had a very competently paced animation with delicately fleshed out world and story, even if it was just a little of it. That would be so much better than trying to rush to get everything on screen.

Well, somehow I still find myself enjoying this series.

@MadVandal This is a really interesting detail and it makes me deeply sad we don't get this in the animation.

If the animation slowed down just a little, we could get this kind of information shown to us and would enhance the worldbuilding tenfold.

Seriously, that feels like a really important and cool thing to leave out. Kind of bummed the show is jumping across scenes and characters SO much while throwing tons of terms and ideas at us.

The early part of the episode had some minor issues such as the information box, about the performance being a play to appease the family members of a tragic event, being easily overlooked because it appeared alongside the Chinese credits, as well as the flashback to the divination about Meyer's safe return being too rushed. There was also the slightly bigger issue that it appeared like Triss didn't get all the ingredients yet managed to brew the potion without issues. I just assume that he just stole the final ingredient when he noticed that he got discovered, but this does seem like a bit of an oversight.

All that aside it was a great episode. The donghua delivered the usual stunning visuals and background and also some additional foreshadowing related to Dunn (using his pathway's basic sequence 9 night time all-around boost) and Leonard (noticing he has been cursed by the witch after looking at his "wriggling shadow" and knowing exactly how to deal with it) and IIRC made the Witch-sequence's fighting style more in line with how it's shown later in the story and in the sequel Circle of Inevitability.

Some might say Triss/Trissy got too much screentime here, but I think it's appropriate considering that he/she is a major recurring character down the line.

I personally liked EP4 more overall, but EP5 is still a ~4.7/5 for me, rounded up to 5/5.

I made a comment not so long ago in ep 4, saying that I understood everything that's happening, and that I was enjoying the anime, it is still the case with this episode I even say this is the first episode where I didn't had any doubts except the timeline of events, but other than that is fine. The problem here is, that theres not a single moment to breath, I dont mind an anime giving me lots of lore and more, shit I dont mind watching one as complex as this one, but here is a mess tbf because they dont stop giving you lore and info. I always think before giving a viewer/reader info is better to let them breath, for example: lore dump about some organization -> moment of tranquility and let the viewer get used to that info -> THEN another lore dump. Imo that's a good way to give the people part of the world building slowly, In this anime it feels overwhelming, to the point it kinda hurts the enjoyment, at this point I feel every episode will introduce an insane amount piece of lore instead of introducing it slowly through the plot. Keep in mind that I dont care for big world building, honestly thats always my favorite part of an anime/book/game or wtv. But the biggest flaw of this anime is that they jumpscare you with an insane amount of info of a shit ton of stuff since episode 3 (i gave the benefit of the doubt at first), now, today I managed to read the novel for like 12 chapters or so, and holy shit it makes the whole experience better. And yes, I know, different mediums, but that's not the point. In the novel Klein is actually charismatic and smart. He's not special, which is a deep flaw I see the anime do, I didn't mind this so much because i though he was gonna get humbled in later episodes, but Klein from the anime and the novel are two different people. The one of the anime seems generic, "the chosen one" and your typical isekai protagonist. The novel just erases that thought and actually makes him interesting. So far, I'm seeing this anime as a new 1997 berserk, sure, is cool, is great. But along side the original work is just a baby vs a hydrogen bomb. And im seeing why novel readers were hyping this up so much even though im only in like 12 chapters or so. I'd say if you are really interested in this story and world, please read the novel, it genuinely kicks the anime in the balls. Is it dense asf I agree, and I know adapting all of this is hard and some sacrifices needed to be made. But if the anime were to have at least 24 episodes, maybe an hour long first episode and without tencent dumb restrictions this would be so much better. I'm not hating the anime by any means but I'm not glazing it either, I'm just being honest, there are HEAVY flaws and im sure there will be much more users here which would add more honest and clear flaws without being a full on hater. This episode while I understood everything I didn't enjoy it as much as the others, shit ill say it even felt tiring to watch. But yeah, thats my opinion, I tried my best to put my thoughts on to this because theres some feelings that somehow i cant put into words regarding this anime. Though, besides the few flaws i said, there's a lot of stuff were the anime improved on compared to the first 3 episodes, animation, pace, soundtrack and the overall direction of some scenes. But yeah, dont lynch me for expressing my opinion, I still think this episode made me realize a lot of the flaws of the anime. And rewatching episode 1 and 2 I realized once again how bad those episodes were, and how crazy hypnotized I was when I first watched them.
@Symk Everything you don't understand in the anime is explained in the Novel, my tip: just read it

@HagePotPotato man i'm glad there's still anime onlys like you that realized a lot of things going on and expecting things to tie together at the end. LOTM deserves more viewers like you.

Anyway, I hope you can enjoy the final 3 episodes of the Donghua because they will be adapting the very things that made me fall in love with the novel.

First of all, I want to express my appreciation to the team behind the Lord of the Mysteries project—everything feels so real: the visuals are stunning, the details, the lighting, the camera angles—everything is extraordinary.

Watching episode 5 feels like being part of solving the mystery behind the Alfalfa ship tragedy. The battle was epic, and the horror atmosphere was truly intense. It was revealed that the culprit was Tris (a Beyonder on the path of the Assassin, Sequence 8, the Instigator).

There was also a surprise: when a Beyonder on the path of the Assassin advances to Sequence 7, the Witch, they change gender to female. Damn, the female version of Tris is really beautiful and sexy (but remembering the original gender, I end up not liking her after all). ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even though the story is complex, little by little I’m beginning to understand Lord of the Mysteries.

The Lord of the Mysteries donghua just dropped—and yes, the pacing is fast. Really fast. But somehow, it still works.

If you’ve read the novel, you’ll notice scenes flying by at Beyonder speed. Some internal monologues are trimmed, and a few moments don’t get the time to breathe. But the core atmosphere is intact—and that’s what matters most. The horror, the intrigue, the mystery behind every glance and shadow—it’s all there, just compressed.

Visually? Absolutely stunning. Tingen looks grim and lived-in. The occult symbols, the Tarot Club visuals, and the subtle horror touches are gorgeously animated. And that intro? Straight-up goosebumps.

Klein’s portrayal is faithful, even with the quick pacing. His fear, confusion, and gradual transformation are still believable. Voice acting is top-tier, and the music? Immersive without being overbearing.

Yes, I wish they slowed things down just a bit. But for what we got? It’s the best-case scenario for a LoTM donghua adaptation, especially given the genre’s complexity. If future episodes strike a better balance, this might become legendary.

10/10 for ambition, atmosphere, and execution. May The Fool bless the animators.

This show is disappointing me a lot, most of it is awesome but the pacing is awful - way way too fast with way too much cut content, it's like watching a 30 minute long trailer with no room to breathe constantly missing important information.
It's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

Another 10/10 episode man the animation is just beautiful in every scene bro and that’s not even an exaggeration bro like this shit is the most well animated 2D tv show I’ve ever seen in my entire life this shit beats out all of western animation in recent years in my eyes๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Yooooo Tris was actually a Trissy with a Trisussy????? Lmao jk but fr tho im surprised Tris was actually the fine ass lady from when she bumped into Klein and I’m actually surprised she actually killed all those innocent suffering people and managed to get away scotch free like that ain’t fair to those ppl bro i hope she gets what’s coming to her๐Ÿ˜•

The fact that all the demoness sect are all women makes one think if all of them were initially men at first and then defected to becoming a woman to achieve maximum evil bc throwing away ur manhood is insane work ngl๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ’€

Bro ik she’s evil and all but yo TRISSY IS A BADDIEEEEE like those titties go crazy everytime they were on the screen and I hope she comes back so we can get more cleavage shots from her๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ˜ฎ‍๐Ÿ’จ

now THAT was a magic battle. ole girl TRISSY (lol) has some properly assassin/mage esque powers. Demoness Sect is quite the interesting bunch indeed... very uh, modern.
Also, I'm starting to believe Leonard is as powerful as he egotistically and playfully boasts. Maybe even another isekai'ed guy like Klein.

@Symk That’s exactly what I’ve always said.
This is the problem with many donghua. Yeah, they have money and staff, so the adaptations are definitely visually stunning and smooth (except for this one with 30k frames sometimes doesnt look that good).

But clearly the biggest issue lies in the important aspects like direction, storyboard, pacing, choreography... Basically, the way they deliver it to the audience just isn’t engaging or artistic, to be honest. I don’t know if this is just the filmmaking style in China, or if it’s because the donghua industry is still relatively new and the creators haven’t yet refined their craft.

But you’re right, one of the most important things in an episode is having pauses, giving viewers time to reflect, and for some people - to breathe. This would definitely make watching experience better. Not just running like a nonstop marathon like this. It’s not that it’s hard to understand, I can follow everything, but telling a story this way just isn’t the right approach.

At least from episode 4 onward, the quality has gotten much better, and it’s way less frustrating to watch. Definitely something worth looking forward to.
