Should Cats Have Jobs?
| Guten McTag, MAL folk! today I have but a simple ethical dilemma that I would like some additional opinions on: Should cats have jobs? This has been a long-time debate in feline-focused circles for several centuries now. Originally, it was thought that cats should not be allowed to work any jobs. The logic was that cats are too purrfect to do any work. Jobs are dirty, tiring, and unfun, and cats are simply too amazing to have to suffer through any of that. Things took a world-twisting turn in the 900s, though, when traders and merchants in the Mediterranean shipping lanes hired cats to help with pest control on their ships (specifically, by eliminating rats). The cats were given the job title of "Purr Rat" Hunters, due to their rat hunting, and the ships they worked on became known as "Pi rate" ships as a mispurronunciation of that name. The owners of the Pi rate ships argued that it was okay for the cats to work because the cats wanted to work, and they didn't have the authority to deny cats what they wanted. The church disagreed, however, and in 1012 they declared that all Pi Rate ships were enemies of the world that must be stopped. While Pi rate ships have decreased substantially, their ideas haven't died. 1000 years later the argument rages on as to whether or not cats should be allowed to work any job they want. I used to purrsonally be a believer that cats shouldn't work, but my views have changed and I tend to agree with the Pi rates that we can't stop cats from working if they want. So do you agree or disagree with the view that cats can have jobs? Please let us all know your thoughts!
