is it just me or has anime been lackluster lately? i haven't been able to find an anime that has me hooked from start to end. i find myself getting bored either by episode 3, or watching until ep 7-8 and not wanting to finish so it sits in my "on hold" and i dont touch it for another year. what are some animes where the story is just that good that i dont drop it or put it on hold?

I have the same exact issue. It just feels like I can't properly get into any anime recently and actually finish it. I wonder if it is because I'm getting older and don't have the same drive to watch a show throughout if it doesn't fully capture my attention. Judging by your profile, looks like we both have so much "On Hold" but really... I doubt I'm ever gonna finish any of these anime even if I think they are worth watching. There's a sense of dread when I look at it. I tell myself I will get to them eventually but I never do. Let me know if you find any solutions lol

yesss you get it. im 24 now so it might be age but like even tho im this old, my love for anime has never faltered. i think it’s my attention span. i find myself picking up my phone even if it is interesting or falling asleep while watching anime. the last anime where like i was invested was either zombieland saga or migi to dali.

I found it quite refreshing among all the recent fantasy anime, more d&d than Jrpg kind of fantasy, a good mix of comedy and tragedy.

It's most definitely not just you. There's a huge amount of new anime coming out every season and most of it is trash. Don't get me wrong there are still gems that come out, but they are that much harder to find in the sea of new anime and few and far between. A lot of current anime is severely lacking in artistic direction and solid writing. The presentation just doesn't have any impact or flair and is usually barely serviceable, if not a detriment. Also, the writing seems to resort more and more to telling without showing rather than show don't tell, with an excessive use of expositing and info dumping instead of organically developing a world, characters and story. There is just an overabundance of lazy productions in anime recently. At a certain point it isn't worth slogging through something that doesn't do it for you. It's better to just drop it and forget about it so you don't end up burning yourself out. And if you are burned out on anime it's best to step away for a while and come back later. You could always try reading manga or something in the meantime.

Sometimes when I'm stuck on a streak of disappointing anime I start questioning myself about whether or not I've grown out of it and anime just doesn't appeal to me anymore, a sad prospect. But all you have to do to disprove that theory is go back and rewatch a favorite anime. You will quickly realize it's just as good as you remember and anime is still wonderful. Occasionally there will be a series that just doesn't work for you anymore since we all change with time, but for the most part rewatching a favorite will only reaffirm your love of anime.

As for recommendations there is already quite a few good ones here, but here are a few more:

3-gatsu no Lion
White Album 2
Chihayafuru
Glass no Kamen (2005)
Kemono no Souja Erin
Great Teacher Onizuka
Kenpuu Denki Berserk
Houseki no Kuni
Made in Abyss
Fate/Zero
Steins;Gate
Hourou Musuko
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei
Skip Beat!
Ashita no Nadja
Nodame Cantabile
Musekinin Kanchou Tylor
Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Fullmetal Alchemist/ Brotherhood
Full Metal Panic!
Beck
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen
Bakemonogatari
Tengoku Daimakyou

I'll throw in the live action TV series Andor as well. I watched it recently and it blew away all my expectations. Highly recommended.
