I saw several comments arguing about how is the spectre of death (the ghost that took Yayoi's Mom) more powerful than a "literal God".

Sadly the translation doesn't clarify on this (a sad reminder of the better days of fansubs) but the term [KAMI] in shinto can have multiple meanings for the westerns.

It can refer to a strong spirit, a God (the one God), a manifestation of nature, etc...

Since Yayoi mentions that this kami has only 500 years old, I'm more inclined to say that this guy is just a strong spirit. Now, it is more powerful that the spectre? well, Yayoi wants to catch him to fight it so there should be some power gap. We shall see.

If you want a good equivalent from the western canon, kami is very close in meaning to the ancient greek word δαίμων (daemon/demon). In modern languages it usually means "evil spirit" but its meaning used to be broader, encompassing pretty much everything supernatural.

Yup. A translation would be origami but the original spelling is orikami

Yeah but those are different kanji so they aren't really relevant, all the ones mentioned in ops post use 神

Pretty sure it becomes origami because when you attach multiple nouns/verbs together into one noun it hardens the consonant of the first sound of the second and subsequent words. For example, alarm clock takes eyes (me), the verb for opening your eyes (samashi) and clock (tokei) and puts them together, creating mezamashidokei. So in this context putting ori next to kami creates origami cause ga is the hard form of ka.

@Saimatsu_Fan yeah how anyone still hires that clown is beyond me. But it's HiDive and unfortunately shitty translations/localizations seems to be the norm with them

Yeah. That is why in the game Splatoon, they refer to the device that delivers the splatfest theme the Kami no Kami “god paper”.
