I recently finished watching bastard. and I am confuse why it seems modern anime watchers dont like this anime. From what I heard they dont like this anime because the story and characters are bland.

But in my defense you dont watch  this kind of anime for any deep plot or character development. This anime kinda reminds me a little about Kill la Kill, You dont watch that anime for story or character development, You watch it for the crazy fights and fan service.

But Kill la Kill was received very well. So by that logic this anime should be well recieved by anime fans also so what gives??

There are a lot of dumb reasons why anime watchers don’t like certain animes.

I like kill la kill and I also like bastard.

The difference is that Kill la Kill has actually a deep plot with a really unique concept.
Here the MC just goes around and makes out with everyone. It was repetitive.

It comes off kind of antiquated at times to me but I knew it would so I just get through the parts that fall flat and enjoy the rest. I found FotNS similar. I think a lot of people just didn't realize how old the manga is

Most people forget that this Anime is based on a 90s manga, and campare to late ecchi, fantasies and say a typical fantasy, but this is a really good Anime from a classic manga...

I just recently watched the 90s Ova and actually enjoyed it.
Also saw season 1 last year, Planning to watch this sometime soon.
Its not a 10/10 anime by any means but its enjoyable atleast.

Kill la kill is a much better show, with an incredible production, awesome cast of characters and crazy, fast paced vibe that was super fresh and fun, not to mention the fact that you do watch it for its plot and themes, where the ecchi fan service was in service of those.

Moreover, it’s about a decade old by now so it’s a bit strange to mention it in your take about “modern fans”.

That said, bastard is still a good time and a fairly decent adaptation (it seems) of a manga that is pretty beloved, so I don’t see why you should feel the need to “defend yourself”, it’s a fun series and many people agree with that.

The comparison was still bad though.

I agree that Kill la Kill is better than bastard no doubt about it. Like I said Bastard kinda remind me a little bit of Kill la Kill because both anime you mostly did not watch them for the plot, but more likely about the crazy action and fan service.

We are talking about the remake of Bastard here so it can't be really called a decade old.

bastard by nature is not a thing that will appeal to a broad audience. so thats understandable. (theres a reason it was on ultra jump and not normal jump)
kill la kill was over advertised as 'triggers big hit' and if you know the whole deal with ginax and suff you'll undrestand that too.

I love crazy anime (like Baki) but I didn’t like Bastard that much because the sheer absurdity and obscenity of the world and characters clashed with the times the story tried to be serious and the characters tried to be more endearing. That’s just me though.

For me it felt pretty dated, like I could see why it was cool in the 80s or 90s, but today it’s nothing special

it just using very old troupe, not that it is bad but it's not quite "fit in" with today's popular anime troupe.

and why popular anime troupe changes over time is because people taste changes, and it's very normal.

because people are snowflakes puritans who can't handle ecchi lol

kill la kill has fanservice but just like monogatari, neon Genesis evangelion, golden boy and gurren lagaan anime fans who hate fanservice gaslighted themselves into ignoring the fanservice for them

it's also why people hate Fire force and love soul eater despite both series having tons of fanservice and are made by the same author

People don't Criticize stuff that they deem " classic "

Mmm, I dont think Bastard was that highly praised outside of setting tropes due to being an old manga in the first place though?

look look. this is based off a manga from the 70's. It wasn't till I found that out that I could truly appreciate this series. This isn't a bland 2023 anime. it's a bad ass, metal, dated masterpiece that is just made to be fun. They could've updated it so it fit modern times. But they definitely realized it's simply more fun to stay to it's roots. And I'm all for it
