so uhhh isn't this thread talking about how one holds an anime because of japanese language, is it? look at the replies, most of them are just arguments of monogatari series and whatnot

anyway, yes, i'm about to watch chihayafuru but i heard that it'll be more enjoyable if i understand japanese more, so i kinda refuse to watch it atm

I was thinking about learning Japanese until I found out how difficult it actually is. So I have no intentions of learning Japanese any time soon.

Good choice. Never pick it up again.
You told me that too late. Unfortunately, I made a point of continuing this garbage...
It's a sacrifice to watch, but one day I'm done.
Why waste time, it's not that good I am sure u are gonna regret it.

I'm learning Japanese, but not for anime. 30 years ago? Sure, maybe. But there's no need with subs and dubs etc.

What's next then, learning korean and chinese to watch
korean or chinese movies, learing japanese to watch anime
is dumb af argument and putting on hold an anime just too
watch it is kinda counterproductive, as most anime watchers
are so into japanese culture that you don't need
japanese to understand deep jokes as somehow you understand it well
with subs or characters behaviour.

Lmao like i need japanese to understand tsundere.
2025 might be the year where I will be happy. This year is not happy year.

No.

As much as I'd love to be able to enjoy some puns without the help of explanations in translator notes, generally as soon as the basic premise of the pun is explained I fully understand it.

no, while I know there’s some stuff that gets lost in translation in anime I don’t think it would be the sole reason I put something on hold to learn Japanese for

I've never done that, but if I ever learn japanese I know for a fact that the first anime I'm gonna rewatch is Gintama.

Yeah nothing wrong with that. Gigguk is a youtuber/content creator + he lives in Japan so its reasonable as well for him to learn it, not just so he could understand anime better. If I live in another country I would put effort in learning the language in less than a year.

And I would love to learn japanese but theres not much reason for me apart from anime, theres other languages I'm more interested to learn.

No. I am watching precure in Japanese with no subs to practice though so that’s something I guess.

If you're just starting out with the language then the Monogatari Series is probably not the best anime to immerse with first. It might end up like how Edward from FMA saw the truth:

JLPT level wise, the light novels the series is adapted from are on a different scale (N2 maybe even N1).

They talk fast, there's a lot of word play, seconds of text popping up, etc. The translators who did the subs did pretty good. So you can still enjoy the series.

Japanese is fun especially if you like anime and manga. Try to take small steps for now.

Notice: I read most manga in Japanese now so I'm not sure where you can read in English. Sorry in advance.

For me it's indifferent if I watch the anime dubbed or subbed. I put anime on hold for other reasons.

The only thing that comes to mind is Saint Seiya due to it being back when there were absolutely no good English dubs for the original anime after episode 50 or so and I had yet to buy the manga or delve far enough into learning Japanese to pick up on core pieces of dialogue. I eventually picked it up again soon after anyway.

Other than that, I wouldn't say so. An adept understanding of Japanese can allow you to better understand things such as wordplay and some subtle pieces of dialogue, but very rarely does a lack of it make an anime tedious to watch.

Huh...? Why would I need to study Japanese just to watch an anime? If you are required to know a language in order to consume product then the way the product was handled is quite lackluster, as the studio limits its potential consumers (and I am referring to something that doesn't translate well through subtitles. I am fully aware Japan is the primary focus for many anime productions, but since anime is growing more and more popular outside of Japan, limiting their potential customers is a bad thing on their part), but whatever. There were quite a few animes that had jokes that people who live outside of Japan wouldn't get. According to that logic I would have to learn everything about Japan just to get the best experience out of some animes, which is not worth it unless I am interested in the culture and language to begin with. So no, I don't, and I don't think people should put stuff on hold just because they can't fully grasp everything to its fullest extent.
