Except a few boring "IRL" episodes and recycled rape, I really enjoyed this season... up to the first major appearance of Prime Minister Sinister.
Everything before was mostly fun and interesting. Exploring a new world, learning about its mechanics, the way it was kinda like a game but also not like a game at all.
Then we had to suffer some more carbon copies of self-licking men who rape women to make Kirito mad. It felt recycled and completely unnecessary. There was a huge number of way the story could have accomplished the same, but no, we had to sit through another rape scene. This time a double rape to boot.
Somehow, the story managed to bounce back though. The prison escape was fun, seeing humanized Cardinal was great, some nice backstory and worldbuilding - not everything made perfect sense, like why was Cardinal living in archive that contains "everything" but its completely disconnected from the world and she doesn't know anything about Alice... but ok, minor plot holes like that are tolerable.
The descent up the church tower was fun. The holy knights all had something to go for them, quite a varied bunch. My favorite, apart from Alice, was Fanatio with her mirror sword, who felt like a mix of classical anime tsundere and Lady Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones. Those two traumatized little girls who chose a more pragmatic way when hunting down the intruders were also very likable. I did not like when they kept pressing their swords against each other for entire minutes, that was quite distracting.
But then the anime remembered they are trying to be inspired by Alice in Wonderland, so here comes some sort of Humpty Dumpty thing. I don't know if it was supposed to be funny, but it was extremely cringy and stupid. It completely ruined the atmosphere, and foreshadowed the rapid downfall ahead.
Everything from then on was completely stupid, cringeworthy, nonsensical and asspulled - sometimes all of those at once.
People randomly stopped fighting at talked at lengths and the enemy politely waited. Multiple meaningless sacrifices happened among a clusterfück of an exposition which made little sense. People kept dying, and reviving as it fit them. Hands kept being amputated in a way that made it look like a parody. Eugeo heroically transformed into a sword-fighterjet which had more love than the evil sword-battledroid so he won, but then performing one of said amputations. Quinella benevolently used less and less powerful attacks as Kirito's comrades kept falling, for no apparent reason. She can control everything, but she choses to fight with a higher and higher handicap instead.
Power of friendship with totally-not-a-single-gay-overtone overcame everything and miraculously reconstructed and upgraded a destroyed sword, just so Kirito could go dual wielded, which he previously said he can't. Magically, his avatar transformed into his usual SAO one, because why not. After he inevitably wins, Quinella tries to escape, but the long-dead Humpty Dumpty comes back alive and learns to fly, and somehow explodes or something and basically gropes her to death.
Somehow, this all means Alice cannot regain her memories. It was hard to tell why, since Eugeo during his attempts to die, which the production team constantly prevents him from, takes time to give Kirito memories from his crystal... I really don't know. I was trying to pay attention, but I just resigned to accept everything as the will of the producers which doesn't have to make sense and which isn't to be questioned.
Nobody cares about Alice, maybe she's bleeding to death right now but whatever.
Finally dead Eugeo gets loli Alice, good for him.
The show desperately tries to convince me I am sad and I want to cry, but I feel nothing. I did actually cry during this season - when the sad and lonely Operator girl said her dream is to "fly away on the platform". She couldn't even imagine a life without the platform, that was the saddest thing I've seen in years.
And then we get another deus ex machina intervention, Kirito contacts the outside just as they are under attack. Just when Kirito's matrix machine is about to be destroyed, along with his vegetable body, Asuna is shown logging in and that's a cut.
Seriously, probably the worst season ending I have seen in a long, long time. I can think of just one, Attack of Titan S4 ending, which was even worse than this.
From all the BS that happened, I'll pick one - Cardinal chooses to stand still and get killed, just so the other three could go home. Nobody intervenes. To thank her for her glorious sacrifice, they choose to stay and fight. WTF
The entire season up to senator Humpty Dumtpy was 7.5/10 for me. The rest was 3/10 at most.
So, overall for this season: 5/10
The only thing I enjoyed about the last few episodes was Quinella staying naked the whole time. I'd watch a movie version without convenient censorship. |
