What an experience this volume was, right so after I read the material not covered by S1, my enjoyment is much higher, I already have a feeling S1 was just a prologue and that this will be a deep dive into the world of Rezero for the first time.
I finally realized not having seen what is going to happen, makes for a lot more impact for an LN like Rezero, way more than for others series, like TONS MORE.
It thrives on suspense and shocking you, on clever slowly building stuff and giving you glimpses of what might be the truth, fooling you all the more!
I m glad I changed my approach and went with the LN first, even if I had to go through the boredom of some earlier volumes.
This volume was just amazing, especially paired with Rezero anime soundtrack, you are seriously undermining yourself if you read without any.
IMO a lot happened in this volume, it is only the start of Arc 4, which is one of the most highly regarded from the WN.
So many feelings in this volume, starting with the tragedy with Rem, and a note about her, I do not want a fucking harem, it pisses me off hearing him wanting to marry both of them, Rem already had a what-if ending just PISS OFF with that shit already.
For Rem fans, she is not the best girl, she is a rather good girl but all she has going for herself is her actions with Subaru, take that way and her personality are a far cry from Ram's.
The first half of this volume was just sad to read, and suspenseful, up till the chapter reunion and things are finally being explained with Roswaal, not knowing what is going on, just builts so well with all the mystery, otherwise, I wouldn't have been this invested in what the characters were gonna reveal and what happened.
Then we have "Parent and Child" chapter, this was an emotional wreck, I spent most of the latter part of it, fucking crying!!
When I realized what the writer was going to do, I got extremely hyped to get to this chapter and read it, because Subaru was gonna meet his parents again, truly for a last time, after he was gone from the Earth for good, this meeting had so much potential if the writer played it right since Subaru cant escape from the fact he is not going to get that old life back.
If he wants to live with Emilia, he truly has to make his peace with having a permanent farewell with his family, and while that part was short, it HURT like a bitch, it was never addressed up to now, kudos for doing such a great job on the first try.
I was never as attached to Subaru ever with the S1 as I was with reading this chapter, it was superb character development, like he said, he has already done most reflection during his loops but still, I m very proud of his course of action and his family, especially his, was soo cool, this departure hurts not only the character but the reader too.
Amazing chapter, very different from the rest of this volume, and thus far, my favorite development for Subaru, being itself a summary of what he had evolved as a character to this point, the only thing I couldn't relate to was the logic beyond how Subaru to come to first experience all these problems, it felt dumb, but I feel only someone in just a position could relate.
Roswaal reveals his true colors in this volume, what a foolish man... also from paying attention to these talks and volume 11, I believe this is what makes Roswaal start to feel like Subaru as some looping powers going on, though of course is not aware of the true nature of this all...
After seeing S1 in 2018 I took quite a read through Wikipedia, so things like the Witch Factor or other witches were not new, but I knew all these spoilers, most details fuzzy, scattered across a wide blank canvas, and now seeing how the dots connect, there is so much I forgot and meaning to everything never there before, everything just feels new, fresh, it is like a new start for me with this LN, and this late in, considering we are on volume 10, wtf...
I think I m finally seeing with my eyes, why there is all this praise for the LN, and the sooner people STOP watching adaptations for this first, and give a chance for the source material to reveal itself, not knowing what will happen, the better...
I bitched about reading LN 1-9 being such an odd mixture and S1 having tons more impact, but here, even the small stuff make me tense and the worldbuilding supporting the suspense grabs your heart and leaves you without breathing almost as hard as Satella does to Subaru~~
Let's use those last few pages with Subaru returning to the mansion, it slowly got so creepy and I knew Elsa was going to show, while reading this in broad daylight, on a queue, and listening to the OST for those creepy vibes, when Elsa showed up it was still so shocking, there was a quality to it, all I wanted the most after seeing S1, and seeing the LN nailing the mystery, the sadness and Subaru development only to end with pure GOLD, supreme tension and making you feel like a LITTLE BITCH... YES, BULLY MY HEART AND SOUL MOREEEEEEEE!!
Oh and at the end, and I still have not talked about Echidna?! SHAMEFUL, tbh I was still not 100% sold on her being such an oppressive opponent, but of course, she has her objectives and will use Subaru if she can... but her introduction was something this series needed, refreshing, leaving great promise for the future!
The beginning of this arc is pulling no stops to take the plot out of what felt just a tiny prologue, and if you love Echidna here, just wait till volume 11.
I know this series is soon to be 33 volumes long, and that is only having adapted 7 arcs of the WN, with the writer planning 11 to end the series (or more if he feels the need), wow.
To be this excited with the beginning of arc 4, the start of vol.10 feeling enthusiastic about everything that is to come, I can now give proper value and understand how can this series be this FUCKING LONG, and how much of an epic it promises itself to become.
The writer has been writing since 2012, I am soo overjoyed, knowing I have so much to read, and I won't make the mistake of waiting for future English translations either, WN will be the way.
This volume surpassed all my expectations, coming from me, where I also LOVED volume 11, currently sinking my teeth, greedily so on volume 12 (and finally starting S2)...
S1 made this world one of my favorite isekai, but the treads were shaky and based on some peak moments of arcs 2 and 3 alone, now I can truly say I love and want to breathe this world from the bottom of my heart, finally having experienced a proper baptism with this series.
Things for me truly had to start with LN 10, because I had seen S1 first... but I don't regret anything, neither I regret my comments about LN 1-9, even so, this writer conquered my heart and has my admiration to peak to unthinkable levels, because writing such a long, suspenseful and mysterious story is not easy, neither is the world building, yet Tapei is truly a master of his craft and a very talented writer, I hope he manages to ride it till the end of what he wants to do with this series, and truly presents us a very long journey that is just unlike anything else, and goes down in history as a masterpiece, hell, if he fucks it up a bit, this should still be something special.
