This is probably my favourite episode of Spice and Wolf because I really felt for Lawrence in this episode. He's so stressed out because of the debt he's now in which he's now under a tight deadline. I don't think he meant to shove Holo it was just the fact that he was just under so much pressure. And that last merchant he saw was most definitely a dick towards him I mean come on dude you have him as a client for so long and then when he's running low on funds you decide to toss him out with the trash just like? Man what a douche. Hopefully Lawrence will patch things up with Holo in the next episode.

Desperation is the keyword in this episode, with how Lawrence's situation seems to become increasingly more hopeless and unstable with each passing minute. I figured that all their swindling on the merchants from earlier would come back to bite them eventually.

What's the deal with this crap treatment of debtors who have a girl accompanying them though? No one cared when Holo was following Lawrence at any other point, but it's arbitrarily some great sacrilege now that he's in a poor financial state?

The character motivations and rationale continue to confuse me. All of those trading companies rejected Lawrence solely because he's traveling with a woman which automatically means he's careless with money..? Or maybe that was just with that last trading company?
In any case, it feels like this conflict was created for the sake of injecting some drama between the main characters

wtf is wrong with you, Lawrence. You wasted the entire day begging for money and never asked Holo any ideas for a better scheme? tsk

Sad faces all around, but this is a good episode for encouraging us to avoid going into debt if possible.

Damn. Lawrence x Holo stocks are rising... That is what I thought at the beginning of the episode. So, the end of the episode caught me by surprise.

It seems like Lawrence made a foolish deal with the armor and is now in debt. I wonder how he will get out of the situation when he just wasted one out of the two days he had left. And also repair his relationship with Holo. I know he's desperate but it still feels bad how he treated her.

This show is very engaging even tho I don't understand what they're talking about a lot of the times.

Well, that escalated very quick. Also, compared to what people were making it seem like here, the last scene was not much of a big deal at all (?), seems like something after which they will make up immediately the next episode.

First poorly written episode of Spice & Wolf. Was consistently good until this one. This episode has some issues.

  • The problem feels contrived. Of course the moment Lawrence takes out massive credit the single commodity he's selling would crash. It's strange that Lawrence wouldn't diversify his goods giving the amount of money, and it's stranger that anything in a medieval economy could just crash like this, especially metal working.
  • The city shunning Lawrence because he publicly keeps Holo is a companion demonstrates the story has been neglecting some critical world building. Lawrence has been travelling around with a woman that he isn't married or related to. It makes Holo seem like a harlot. To a religious society concerned with a proper duty & structure, this makes Lawrence seem like immoral scum. This should've been portrayed in the story far more often than it is now, and also should've been a concern of Lawrence. If Lawrence's character is meant to be that of a mindful man, he should've had plans to abate this issue.

Lawrence's reaction at the end comes across as an overreaction, a trope bad anime writing. Some of the romance stuff has Lawrence acting like he's 15 instead of 25.
