| So this was released even before the series and the other DVD short. The style is yet again a bit different and this time I dont think I prefer it much. Chiyo's VA is different as well and after the series, this one just didnt hit the same way. Anyways, its cute to have Azumanga content. |

| So, this was like a pilot or something for the actual anime that came out about 2 years later. Makes sense. These types of pilots were super common back in the day I think. For something made in 2000, the quality is crazy impressive. They completely nailed the amateur video vibe. I miss old digital cameras and camcorders. Tho I don't think I ever used a camcorder myself. Despite the low resolution, the animation still holds up surprisingly well. It just feels so surreal to watch 25 years later. It lives up to be the "time capsule" that the VHS tape was supposed to be. It's crazy that this ONA predates stuff like YouTube and Nico Nico Douga. Truly ahead of its time. But still aged really well. Now on to the short movie. Watching the after finishing the main series feels crazy. The animation is different. The character designs are different. The voices are different. Strangely, Nyamo and Yukari retain the voice actors from Web Daioh in the actual series. That's crazy. Chiyo sounds so different here. I'm kinda glad she and the other girls got recast. It just feels "wrong". Tho I'd say Tomo sounds very close to the series VA. I'm glad we got the voices that we got. Satsuki Yukino as Yomi is crazy. The girls also look "cuter". I think the final character designs were better for a comedy series. I think it's fun to think of this as some sort of alternate universe. Maybe in a parallel universe, we got Azumanga Daioh with this cast and animation and loved it. |
