Hakugei is pretty underrated (in the western fanbase at least; Japanese fan ratings seem to deem it pretty good, albeit not a classic on par with Ashita no Joe, which is pretty accurate; not amazing, but still worth a look). The idea that, in being a loose, sci-fi, pseudo-adaptation of a classic book it somehow "ruined" the original material is pretentious nonsense; the kind that, sadly, is common online discussions where everyone tries their hardest to look scholarly and literate (and thus above such "blasphemy"). As if somehow Osamu Dezaki, Akio Sugino and Koji Ueda traveled back in time and forced Herman Melville at gunpoint to write a book about space pirates going after a mecha-whale instead of what we now know as Moby Dick.

You should never take anyone's word for granted as far as the lesser-known or generally disliked work of a talented director goes, and always give the work a shot on your own. The "WORST OLD SCHOOL ANIME EVAR" choices are often just arbitrary meme opinions, with stuff like Dezaki's Golgo 13 movies being considered "legendarily bad" and other old anime that are equally silly if not moreso being viewed as "timeless classics". What's wrong with cartoons being silly, anyway?

That show was recently licensed by Discotek as well. So I'm just going to buy it when it comes out.

I knew Karate Baka Ichidai's first episode had been subbed for quite some time. I didn't realize the whole show had been subbed.

Though it sucks for us Australians as we can't access Hulu in this country.

Grrrr.

Hello, I really appreciate this club's existence. Thank you ever so much!

In case, I just want to share an information if you don't know anything about this. Ashita no Joe's creator Ikkı Kaijiwara's another work Karate Baka Ichidai has subs on Hulu. So, I thought you might want to know this information. But probably, you know this information. If not, please be informed.

Thanks for the invitation, this is one of my top 3 directors along with Isao Takahata an Ryosuke Takahashi.

I'm not too fond of Hakugei either. :(

Though I liked the start of Genji Monogatari though it started to fizzle away very quickly after episode 3.
I liked Ultraviolet: Code 044 as well, but my sentiments are pretty similar to Hisoka.

Though personally I liked Ie Naki Ko a bit more than Rose of Versailles. Have yet to watch Takarajima and Ashita no Joe though. I look forward to them.

Genji Monogatari Sennenki came out a year after. I thought Ultraviolet: Code 044 was pretty cool. Part of the reason the dropped total is almost as high as the completed total on MAL is because the first few episodes got subbed right away and then it was a long time until a group subbed the rest. So it likely got dropped by a bunch of people within that time. By no means his best. But it has moments.

Hakugei is definitely my least favorite of his work. It was kind of a mess with it going on a year long hiatus. You could totally tell too. It started to fizzle. Part of me wants to give it another shot. But it's probably just not that good of a show.

Sword for Truth definitely doesn't deserve to be in the bottom 100 (where it is), but it wasn't good either imo ^^.
Though I may dislike Hakugei even more because it kinda ruins a good book and there was way too much singing xD.
As much as I like Dezaki I can't say I've liked everything I've seen :>. But when he's on fire he is never far away from god-tier.
Planning to watch Ultraviolet: Code 044 in the near future, which will be the newest Dezaki anime I've watched (was it his last?).
Any opinions on that one?
