In case you haven't seen it

5. For the meantime, news threads will no longer be locked. Wondering why we got the ability to sort boards by thread creation date instead of only last reply? We'd like to stop locking news threads, and hope that this feature will help users differentiate between new and old threads in the board. However, we ask that users refrain from posting new information about anime series in threads 1+ week old, and instead submit a news article. We'd also like to ask users to not bump old threads with spam posts or "still no news?"

The News Club is now public. Anyone interested can join freely. Link is below.

Just another reminder if anyone didn't see hpulley's previous message about The News Club. We will eventually make The News Club as a public club, but for now it is still a private club (so anyone interested, please apply to join the club).

This is a good news, at one situation full of bad news and bad decisions.. Even if it is a step more later, not enough to create a stable system according what is necessary to MAL...

I'm quite pleased that much of (if not all of) Kineta's reasoning for closing the older news announcement threads despite the possibility of updates has been exposed as utterly ridiculous. The Weekly Briefs thread is already somewhat akin to an admission that some updates do deserve to be posted in the News forum.

Furthermore the News forum now has a thread dedicated to PVs. Yet, was it not Kineta who pointed out that PVs were already being posted in Series forums and that therefore they were creating "parallel" discussion by being posted in the News forum (http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=702895&show=40)? That was so stupid. OMG a PV might be posted in the News forum AND the Series forum?! THE HORROR LOL!

Perhaps the most obvious admission that they have created a difficult situation is the unlocking of announcement threads. By locking the announcement thread they have basically made things more difficult to update for News mods (who appear to need someone else to unlock it) but also admitted we were right by unlocking them. There are indeed updates that should be posted in the announcement threads. I'm not sure a single of Kineta's arguments holds significant weight at this point.

Wait and see how the situation
progresses...

I didn't see a link to PV (just images from PV) earlier when I saw cast list.

I have to ask other mods. to unlock it, though.

kuuderes_shadow | Mar 23, 2014 4:56 AM
So a PV of Aldnoah Zero with info on the cast = unlock but a PV of Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance with info on the cast, airing date and staff = no unlock?

(note: reposting comment as 'Seirei Tsukai' is a different, unrelated anime)

tsubasalover | Mar 23, 2014 4:40 AM
We have to think if the new info. is suitable for unlocking, or Weekly Briefs.

kuuderes_shadow | Mar 23, 2014 2:12 AM
It seems in recent days that new info is starting to actually mean that the thread gets unlocked with the new info posted in it. Other than Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance which has just been left.

I'm not sure why the bumping of old threads has been seen as such a serious issue. Yes, I guess it can be annoying for the mods to have to delete posts in old threads that don't have an update. Perhaps a few more forum mods would solve this problem?

But why implement such a BLANKET policy? And so suddenly too! Even tsubasalover has expressed concern about it, and she is a news mod!

A scalpel and a chainsaw can both cut, but how often do you use a chainsaw for surgery...The collateral damage makes it a bad idea. Just like locking all news threads after a month makes it difficult/impossible to update old news threads with updates.

I just found out about this recently and I can see why they decided to do this. I think it's the wrong way to go about it though.

Pretty much all forums I visit just has mods delete posts that bump really old/irrelevant threads that are 1-2 years old either by trolls or accident.

If MAL mods want to lock old threads, they should be a minimum of a year old and they should only be locked if it's bumped by a troll/irrelevant post. That's the way I see it.

Would you be bothered if you were forced into a prison? But wait, it's a clean one!

Hahalollawl | Jan 3, 2014 11:52 PM
Isn't there a News section under the "Industry" tab at the top that lists news threads by when they were posted? Can't people just go there if they want the most recent news threads?

wakka9ca | Jan 2, 2014 8:47 PM
This reminds me of when doujinshi were removed from the MAL database. Eventually, people just gave up and accepted it. Honestly speaking though, they should extend the news thread using TWO format. One that can list all news thread by date. The other by latest post. That would solve the problem. However, we all know the maintenance of the actual site code is pretty much dead. No more new features...

I've been lurking around this club for a while now, and have finally decided to join.
Regardless, although it doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever, you have my full support.
Vivid news searchers should have this right. Mods are there to make the community have a clean discussion, not to ease up their own work.

tsudecimo | Dec 30, 2013 2:08 AM
symbv-sama please come back to the news threads~

(Wind_Sr and tsubasalover being the exceptions to what I posted below).
