Anime/Manga this July:
Manga

Chocolat
Probably the most boring and mediocre mangas I have read in a long time. The problem isn't art, pacing, or characters, the issue lies in the fact that nothing happens. It's about a former Yakuza boss who opened a cakeshop and is now caring for his wife's daughter. Now, there could be a lot of potential for this, there has been some gangster action, cute school drama, and now an age gap romance, but there is just no life behind it, not to mention everyone save two characters (the romantic interests) seem more like personifications rather than persons. Can't say I would recommend this with any great hopes.

Demons of Shanghai
A delightful short story by the author of Fullmetal Alchemist. I actually really wish that it had run longer as it had much episodic shenanigan potential and at least one romance. The characters were all adorable (even the whiny kid!) and I think it would have worked perfectly for a good 20+ chapters. Sadly I had to settle for four instead.

Naruto
Wow the Ninja War arc is good, Kishimoto is being really efficient with his panels and keeping the anime in mind, because how he is doing things, it's going to be a long time before the anime has a chance to catch up. He is even succeeding in making the villains into quite impressive bundles of highly intelligent malignancy who are very very genre savvy.

Bleach
Oh wow, this is the most mediocre arc I have ever beheld from Kubo. It is really bland and leaves me with a 'why should I care about these characters?' feeling. Orihime's power upgrade was sweet and that is about it. I just want this manga to end, unless the arc after this one goes somewhere or we get more Isshin pinup panels.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Thus far I am still in the 60 some chapters of gag but I can't say I'm not enjoying it. The characters are really lovable (some of them much more so because the lack of irritating seiyuu) and the comedy makes me chuckle. The artwork is also improving, which is something I always like to see from a mangaka.

Gin no Saji
The new manga by Hiromu Arakawa about an aimless boy in an agricultural high school. I really like it, a lot. Yes it is another school slice of life but it has the added appeal of an unique setting making it seem far more substantial than other works of the genre. This is an area where the author shines too, she KNOWS what she is talking about here and the insight makes the story far more interesting. The one thing I'm wanting to see is more of Hachiken's middle school teacher. I like him a lot and I hope he doesn't just disappear from the cast.

Anime

Gintama
I've said it before and I will say it again, this show is overrated. But once you get past that, there is much to say on its behalf. The comedy usually delivers and the characters are all iconic (whether you like them or not). There is little that resembles a formulated plot, save in the very scattered arcs such as the Benizakura and Yoshiwara in Flames. At the same time there are episodes that are the most miserable pieces of &$^# you can ever come across (ep. 113 made me cry tears of physical pain that exceeded those from Grave of the Fireflies). Because of the vast difference in quality, I will review the arc I saw this summer separately.

Yoshiwara in Flames ep. 139-146
Set in the brothel city of Yoshiwara (based on a historical place by the same name that consequently did burn down) Odd Jobs get involved in helping a young client meet his mother, however things turn grave when they realise that the city of pleasure is ruled by members of Kagura's race, the Yato. Thus begins an intense conflict yet unseen in the world of Gintama.
All the main cast is brought to (and beyond) their limits against the mighty Yato. Kagura was the shining gem of the story and the highlight that unfortunately took place three episodes before the end, thus making the rest rather anticlimatic. I give kudos to the animation crew for using their limited budget and producing perhaps one of the top ten best fights of all shounens. In the end, the arc was top notch in quality, easily earning a high 8 or 9/10. Definitely something I will remember (and rewatch) for a long time to come.

Tiger & Bunny
This series reached new and surprising heights as of recently, particularly with the diminishing protagonist and the fantastic backstory of the main villain (whose life sucks!). As always, Keiichi Sato (director and creator) continues to reference back to minor scenes and make them important plot points proving exactly how much love and effort went into this series. The characters are becoming more real and relatable with every passing episode turning each one into a relative/neighbour/best friend of the viewer with ease.

Hanasaku Iroha
My other spring series has not been quite as much of a groundbreaker unfortunately. For maximum enjoyment, please assume that the first two episodes are nothing like the actual story and move on from there. This is a stereotypical slice of life with occasional depth that goes a bit farther than most in its genre. The art and animation are still fantastic and beautiful, but the story and drama are not. Thankfully the last few episodes, though dull, were at least very enjoyable for me (that's sounds like a contradiction, but seriously, this show is best when boring.) As for the characters, all the ones I adore are not centred on enough and the ones I dispise are too central. I'm still waiting for more on Tomoe, Ren, Tooru (besides his loli tendencies), and Minchi but in the meantime the series has been centering on the bitchy advisor, the useless uncle, the irritating Yuina, and the quickly unendearing MC Ohana. Though next episode is about the moe Nako, so I shall reserve final judgement.

Serial Experiments Lain
NO!!! Gankutsuou just got replaced as the highest quality series I have ever beheld, NOOO!!!. Oh well, I guess there is always a bigger fish. Very deep psychological drama that builds up philosophies and tears them down repeatedly and at the same time extracts a little bit of thought from each of them. The main character Lain is the the best developed underdeveloped highschooler ever to grace the screen and surpasses anything imagination could conjure. I was amused how I could point out who liked who with two seconds of appearance, that's what I get from living with a boatload of women. I cannot justify this series with words alone, so please, just watch it and you may or may not understand.

Natsume Yuujinchou San
Sweet and beautiful story that tugs the heartstrings. It picks up with the same expected quality that can be found in the previous series but promises to also get better, especially since the next episode promises to be creepy, and the author knows how to make creepy. What's probably most odd about the show is how clean it is, I'm talking My Neighbour Totoro zone of clean. I think it's overall cleanliness is what strengthens the effect of when there is peril and horror, so when the blade of a katana pierces a chest and sends blood spraying into the air it affects the viewer much more than the same scene taking place in an action series while still somehow maintaining the overall G-rated atmosphere. And for those who like psychology and philosophy, this show has loads of it and makes difficult concepts understandable to all ages without chewing it down an making over-simplified mush.

D.Gray-man
This series was surprising. At first it really did not seem that great until "The white clown that chases Auguste." was mentioned. I looked into that and discovered that clowns used to have a fully formed theology and now everything that has taken place that made no sense makes sense in the context that Allen is the White Clown and the Millennium Earl is Auguste. All the logic and actions behind everything suddenly have purpose and meaning to it. Thus making an anime that was well worth watching.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
As beautiful as it was gentle, quiet, and sad. This series is sure to be close to anyone's heart who sees it. Family viewing recommended.

Naruto Shippuuden
The Gokage arc came to a good close and has smoothly transitioned into the Confining of the Jinchuriki arc. The adaption has been well paced and animated from the manga, so no filler arcs in sight for a long time to come. The soundtrack is amazing and very good at affecting one's emotions especially in combination with the cinematography. More than once shivers were sent down my spine whenever Sasuke opened his lips. The seiyuu deserves major kudos.

Jyu Oh Sei
This was good, until Thor was an idiot, even then the story was technically good, but I don't like Thor. The artwork was gorgeous though the character designs could be same-y. Worth checking out.

And so, now with my completion of all my favourite character list, I present to you all:

Parings That Amuse Me

Now before you start rolling your eyes, hear me out. Unfortunately or not “shipping” is an inseparable part of otaku culture and being an otaku I would at least like to have my opinions stated. So please also take note that I don’t actually like all of these pairings.

A paring gets on this list for various reasons including but not exclusive to: makes sense, absolutely disgusting, funny, cute, perplexing (why does this have a fanbase?), just plain hot, and even some things I absolutely hate.

And even though most of them are romantically bent, many of them are not, for example, the first one.

Azumanga Daioh
X
This is so adorable… Through the whole series all Sakaki wants is a cat and then this one waltzes into her life making all her girlhood dreams come true. *sigh* I love beautiful endings.

X
Because the latter is so pathetic.

Bamboo Blade
X
Anime-wise, this makes a lot of sense and much of the last four episodes were focused on these two. Being a teacher/student relationship it does have several societal issues, but post graduation I see no reason why this wouldn’t work. Apparently the relationship was not as stressed in the manga, it was just focused on in the anime for the sake of drama, and it worked beautifully.

Bleach
X X
Can anyone say “Stockholm Syndrome?” *evil grin*

X
I have seen one piece of fanart and one fanfic and both were really good. Not actually romantic (thank heavens) but very, very sweet.

X
It’s just cute <3

X
Just seems to fit with the typical tsundere very well.

X
Getting the feeling that a certain redhead is the new black that goes with everything? Well it’s kinda true. This one I must say though was on the odder end of the spectrum.

X
SasuNaru Bleach style though not as dramatic.

X
Faithful servant I guess?

Chrno Crusade
X
Ve-, we-, *tears up*, I’m sorry I can’t talk about this one. *hurries to grab the tissue box*.

Claymore
Raki/Priscilla
Am I the only one who thinks that these two are perfect for one another? The little *#&@&^s. ^_^

Death Note
X
Handcuffs…

X
…I sense an awkward silence…

Eden of the East
X
Girl finds naked guy, loans him clothes, falls in love, typical romance.

Evangelion
X X
That lucky dog ò_ó. My jealous rage is unending.

X
Because we all know what he was doing with her all those years. Not just having dinner I can tell you that much.

X ME
I can dream can’t I?

X
It’s a Jesus-type love, on Kaworu’s side at least.

FLCL
X every female character
Because apparently he's a heartthrob.

Fullmetal Alchemist
X
Well… yeah… kind of obvious, and they are pretty perfect for each other.

X
O_O; MY EYES!!! And he was still in his armour!!! Oh gosh this is horrifying!

Gankutsuou
X
Homoerotic undertones galore. But can you really blame the kid?

Naruto
X Booyeah! Cutest potential relationship of the Naruto-verse. Not to mention the fact she deserves it. Irritates me to no end how the blond idiot forgot about the confession. Most Naruto fanboys would kill to be in his position.

Kiba X
If the whole Naruhina thing doesn’t work out, there is still this.

X
Oh wow HOTTEST pairing of the HOTTEST characters of the series because it’s HOT and canon. Did I say it’s HOT?

X X
I could see Sakura with either of them. Yamato is especially likely, after he mimicked Lee’s expression of utter shock and despair when Sakura “confessed” to Naruto. Furthermore the majority of Sakura’s interaction since the beginning of Shippuden has been with these two. So yeah, call me weird, but from where I’m standing it makes sense.

X Rin
*sniff* ;_;

X
-_-’ They only spend all 400+ episodes obsessing over one another (mostly Naruto). I’m of the opinion it’s more like a deep brotherhood and frankly beautiful. But it does have those odd moments…

X
My wrath is unending.

X
Wow I hate this pairing. I understand that it fits the typical shounen pattern, but it's been reiterated over and over she does not like him that way. *sigh* Doesn't mean the ship will ever go away I suppose.

X
What the… eh? Really? There are no signs of this… and he has Kurenai! Back off!

Cause the “good boy” is a pimp and you all know this could happen. *grins with eyebrow wiggle*

X
Why? Cause it would be dang sexy, logic can go die in a fire with all the boring pairings.

X
I literally shuddered at this.

X
Not a relationship per se, but she sure knows how to work those chains.

X
Bahahaha! Just watch the episode. Bahahahaha!

X
Ok I would and should be horrified, but the only example of this (a fanart) was meant as a joke and was downright hilarious. Major random points scored here.

X
Cute tsundere relationship is cute.

Ouran High School Host Club
X
In a daddy incest way of course.

To be continued…

Top 13 Favourite Opening Themes
Has there ever been that musically and visually stimulating minute and a half of an episode that just left you awestruck? Well these are the ones that did it for me, in as good an order I could make. Also please not that I said "favourite", not best. These are in no way the most amazing openings out there, but they are the ones that mean a lot to me.

Number 13: We Were Lovers: Gankutsuou

Number 12: Noble Roar: Innocent Venus

Number 11: Bamboo Beat (DVD): Bamboo Blade

Number 10: Guns and Roses: Baccano!

Number 9: 88: Katekyo Hitman Reborn!

Just to warn you guys, if you plan to watch Naruto and/or Naruto Shippuden, NO NOT WATCH THIS INTRO!!! It is more spoilerific than any other opening as of yet.

Number 4: Tabi no Tochuu: Spice and Wolf

Number 3: Raison D’Etre: Claymore

Number 2: Melody of the Wild Dance: Bleach

Number 1: The World: Death Note

So I hoped you enjoyed my list. Please comment and make criticisms and suggestions, I would love any and all of them.

Moments that Left Me Stunned

Bleach
Hollow ICHIGO!!!
Any scene Ulquiorra was awesome in, which was most of them.
Various times when Aizen was just amazingly evil, such as

D. Gray Man
The story about Mana and how

Ginga Densetsu Weed
The battle with Kaibutsu where his back story was revealed. Amazingly good writing, very dramatic and sad, though I really wish he had been the primary villain somehow, it just seemed like the series would have been more dramatic.

Innocent Venus
The show was so mediocre until Jin...

Naruto Shippuden
Itachi's back story was amazing and in 20 quick minutes brought him from my most hated character of all time into one of my favourites, but that 200 episodes of hatred had to go somewhere and they went right to Danzo and those elders... oh I want them to meet their ends!

Moments that Were Just Plain Disturbing

Cardcaptor Sakura
Episode 40 where Tomoyo ends up in a dream about Sakura and all her outfits. I always knew Tomoyo was creepily obsessive with her best friend, but that scene brought it to new heights.

Hetalia Axis Powers
Any and every time France appears. I want to take a shower, but I'm afraid he'll be there waiting.
Sweden is a stalker-sh, molester-sh, magane version of Germany. 'nuff said.

Pokémon
Never thought I would have this anywhere on my list, but the mini-arc about the psychic pokémon Abracadabra with that doll girl and the doll house, that disturbs me to this day. Still great scenes.

Moments that Made Me Laugh

Azumanga Daioh
Oh goodness, where do I begin?
Osaka's ".........." moments, so hilarious.
Drunk Yukari
Tomo being a jerk (which was oddly infurating and funny at once.)
Chiyo in the penguin suit... I just died.

Baccano!
Happy Birthday! Best ending line for a series EVAH!

D. Gray Man
Episode 18 Lenalee's Love was awesome. There were four jokes that were just used repeatedly and each time was just as funny as the last. Komui is so over the top however I can sympathise since

Fullmetal Alchemist
Tiny miniskirts!

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
"I want to be doctor like you dad!"... that killed me.

Genenerator Gawl
Gawl and Masami's arguments are pure win as was the insane school festival episode.

Ginga Nagareboshi Gin
Anytime Smith call Cross a b**ch was somehow funny, especially since they were all dogs.

Halo Legends
Spartan-1337 was the one the most hilarious egotists I have ever seen. I just wish he could have had his own show.

Howl's Moving Castle
"There's no point to life if I can't be beautiful!"

Lucky Star OVA
When Kagami woke up from her dream and said something weird and the 24 reference kicks in.

Naruto
Episode 101 when the younglings of team 7 are trying see Kakashi's face under his mask, best part? When Kakashi fanboyed out over a movie being made of an icha icha book.

Naruto Shippuden Movie 1
The end where the princess tells Naruto that she would like his help making the next princess. Lee and Kakashi's reactions were hilarious.

Ouran High School Host Club
1. Any time they slipped on a banana.
2. Haruhi getting her first kiss.
3. Tamaki's sadness corner
... There are really far many things for me to list... just know that there would be over 20 items.

Pokemon
Any and every time James would laugh. Goodness that dub is fantastic!

School Rumble
... I would rather not go into this...

School Rumble Ni Gakki
... This either...

Skip Beat
Her little demons were EPIC!!! As is anytime Kyoko screams.

Moments that Irritated Me

Death Note
When Light killed
The show should have ended there nonetheless and it would have been a 10/10 tragedy. instead it ran on to be a 9/10 disappointment.

Innocent Venus
Every single time Gora opened his little bucca caenulenta. Va I wanted him dead! (native language used for effect)

Moments that Brought Me to Tears.

Bleach: Memories of Nobody
Probably the deepest shounen film I have seen, the ending was incredibly heartbreaking.

Death Note
L... why?

Fruits Basket
Stupid I know, but that Momiji, he was just so, so, such a good big brother! waaaawaaa

Fullmetal Alchemist

Generator Gawl
Natsume's monologue before

Grave of the Fireflies
The whole movie was a shot of pure depression right in the heart. But all of my kids will be required to see it. Watermelon and Rice balls will never again be the same.

Halo Legends
It was the episode where they showed how they stole children and replaced them with clones who would die young and then the originals go find their clones. So depressing, I still get a tight chest, even just writing this. The whole show was very sat, save one HILARIOUS episode.

Hetalia Axis Powers
America and English back story... shut up, I know what you are going to say.

Kino's Journey
The vulcano episode at the end.

Mushishi
I cried over a grimy SWAMP because of this show!

Naruto

Naruto: Shippuden
Kakashi Gaiden has made me cry more than any other video save the Passion of the Christ... Oh wait, I cried more in Grave of the Fireflies too. (Watermelon ;_;) When Kazuhiko Inoue broke out into sobs I felt like my chest melted into an empty void. I have never heard him in any roll weep, but I could feel his agony and sorrow, one of the greatest piece of voice acting I have ever heard. Probably one of the most tragic scenes of all anime too.

Natsume Yujincho
The sparrow at the bottom of the lake, wanting to spend one night with the man she loves. Possibly the saddest thing I've seen.

Romeo X Juliet
Again I know what you are going to say. So shut up.
The episode where that kid dies in the prison camp and the ending were both events that made me incredibly sad, but they were beautiful moments.

Skip Beat
Kyoko's monologue about missing part of her heart actually affected me more in the manga, but it still was heartbreaking in the anime.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time
