Synopsis

In the distant future, an evil entity known as Violenjiger resurrects nine of the most feared generals in Destron history. While saving some inhabitants of a planet destroyed by these Destrons, Cybertron leader Victory Saber is seriously damaged. The leadership of the Cybertron forces is passed on to the heroic robot Dai-Atlas. Together with Sonic Bomber, Dai-Atlas must protect a mysterious crystal on Earth known as the "Zodiac" from falling into the hands of Violenjiger.

From the vast land of Japanese Transformers G1 stories comes Transformers: Zone. Featuring brand new characters and anime-influenced robot designs and transformation and action sequences (something that would later be prevalent in the early-2000s Unicron Trilogy), this is a short Transformers story that attempts to tell the entire plot of a season-long cartoon in a single 20-minute episode. Due to decreasing interest in Transformers in Japan at the time, this OVA was the only animated material that promoted the concurrently-released Zone toyline, and it would be the final Japanese G1 cartoon released before the Beast Wars animes in the late 1990s.

Mixed Feelings
Watching Transformers anime is always a fun and interesting time for me since I usually have no context for what I'm seeing. Such was the case here with Transformers Zone, which was by all accounts fine. I don't fault this 1990 OVA for being strange or anything since that's really on me for not being familiar at all with the particular toyline it was based off of. While it has a plot that doesn't vibe with the knowledge of Transformers I have from my childhood, it's still a rather ok viewing experience. I've talked about the Transformers before and it's a subject I'll definitely come back to when I decide to sit down and re-watch Beast Wars for a bonus review. But this time around we'll be looking at one of the many anime versions that came out. To be specific, the early 90s OVA Transformers Zone brought to us by Toei and Takara.
