Clevatess: Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha

Surrounded by four armies of dark beasts, five humanoid races strive to push the known boundaries of the world. Unfortunately, the 13 heroes dispatched to the southern region are easily wiped out by Clevatess, one of the Lords of Dark Beasts. Determined to get revenge against humanity, Clevatess bursts into the capital of the Kingdom of Hiden, leaving a trail of death and destruction behind him.

Although the situation looks desperate, humanity still has a chance to appease Clevatess' anger. Alicia Glenfall, one of the 13 heroes, is revived by Clevatess to help him raise a newborn infant, Luna, whose choices shall shape the fate of the human world. Although reluctant to help the dark beast at first, Alicia understands that Luna is the only thing that stands between humanity and complete annihilation.

Hiding himself by taking on a human form, Clevatess sets out in search for a wet nurse with Alicia and Luna. With Clevatess unwilling to reveal his identity, it falls on Alicia to slay all enemies that stand in their way. Meanwhile, the neighboring countries prepare to advance on the weakened Hiden, aiming to control the only forge capable of producing the heroes' weapons.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

This one honestly surprised me. Even after the protagonist changes form, the anime sticks to its dark fantasy tone. I expected it to shift into a more typical cute or ecchi direction like many others—but to my surprise, it didn’t, and that’s a big plus.

The story is progressing well so far. Some parts feel a bit illogical, but nothing too distracting—no show is perfect. The art style fits the tone nicely: dark, gritty, and refreshing in a world where most anime lean into the kawaii aesthetic. Animation-wise, it’s nothing exceptional, but it gets the job done and doesn’t feel cheap.

Overall, with the current pacing and ... world-building, Clevatess could turn into a really interesting watch if it keeps this up.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

This anime feels like a chore to watch. Every week, a new episode notification pops up and I just think, “Oh boy, here we go again.” Not because it’s bad; don’t get me wrong. It’s because there are so many scenes in this show that can make you feel uncomfortable. Even a Timmy Tough Knuckle like me can’t help but pause, sit in silence, and say, “Damn…” In a few moments, it truly sticks to its dark‑fantasy roots.

Sometimes dark‑fantasy anime lose their bleakness and tone over the course of a season, and all the grim elements get diluted. Not this one—every episode feels bleaker than ... the last, and I assure you it will stay that way.

With that said, this is not a grimdark anime at all; at most it’s gilded or a very, very bleak noble‑bright. Even with all the doom and gloom, there’s always a sense of hope and victory in every episode. The MC mirrors the world’s condition. Despite being a demon king who would mangle humans in cold blood if they displease him, he still shows honor, pity, and love—clear enough even for a guy with a low attention span like me.

Animation‑wise, it’s far from the worst, obviously, but there’s really nothing special about it. It’s incredibly mid, especially considering the studio behind it has produced numerous anime with gorgeous animation. It’s weird they didn’t give this one at least something comparable or even better so it could hook more viewers.

Overall, a very strong dark‑fantasy series. Highly recommended if you’re into a gritty, brutal setting; not recommended if you’re easily unsettled by uncomfortable or disturbing moments.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

Clevatess is largely ignored by the community, partly because its source material was never popular, and partly because its production values are not that great compared to what is airing alongside with it. In terms of spectacle alone, all eyes are turned towards Dandadan and Lord of Mysteries.

Its subject matter has enough meat to keep rookie anime fans somewhat preoccupied. It explores several aspects of a world where heroism and kindness are for the foolish, while the merciless and the strong always have their way. As catchy as that may sound, the narrative has weaknesses that prevent Clevatess from ever becoming a great series.

1) Since ... the demon lord is oblivious to what it means to be human, everything needs to be explained to him, forcing a big chunk of the plot having to be infodumped. By not being part of human society, the drama becomes second-handed to him. He is not living it or feeling it to a degree the audience can relate with the situations directly. Takopi’s Original Sin from the same season also has a protagonist who does not get humans, but he is far more direct and reactive to each situation.

2) Clevatess is the strongest creature in the series. It feels like he can easily end every single injustice with sheer power alone, but doesn’t, so he can understand humans. At the same time he and his female minions are never in any real danger. They are near immortals (they even get a sexed-up body thanks to him) that just wait for whenever they feel they learned enough to get to the offense and end the cruelty. Even if this can be excused in-story as Clevatess not being a hero but more of an observer or a learner, it is still something that will not sit well with a lot of watchers. The secondary cast will feel completely powerless to do anything or ever stand a chance of stopping him from having his way. Berserk, the most famous dark fantasy anime, had no such issue, since the main characters never felt overpowered or able to end any problem with sheer force alone.

3) The obsession of most writers to treat dark themes as the mockery of ideals and goodness never sits well with me. Instead of having a grim setting that simply is grim, they constantly have to ridicule anyone who feels like being heroic and kind. Standard fantasy is not constantly mocking evil, despite having it as its main antagonistic force, so why should its polar opposite not be able to do that? A real dark setting should never be in need of mockery so that the audience can be constantly reminded they are not watching a fairy tale. It should be dark just by showing characters being petty, afraid or depressed.

So as a whole, Clevatess is a bog-standard dark fantasy show with visuals that will not win many viewers and a theme exploration that is far from flawless. Overall passable and forgettable.
