Rokudou no Onna-tachi

Tousuke Rokudou is a first-year attending Aomori High, a school full of delinquents. He is often bullied by his classmates due to his incompatibility with their behavior, the only exceptions being his two good friends who are also social outcasts. Frustrated at the way they are treated, the three wish they could stand up and claim the fun, peaceful school life of their dreams.

However, Tousuke's life takes a drastic turn when he receives a package from his late grandfather containing their family heirloom, a scroll said to possess the power to save him from impending danger. Upon holding the scroll, a sudden glow emanates, leaving a strange mark on Tousuke's forehead.

Thinking that he's received the means to free himself and his friends from their daily treatment, Tousuke is shocked to find out that its effects are far different than what he had imagined. Although his bullying continues, he realizes that the mark from the scroll acts as a charm, capturing the hearts of delinquent girls—in particular, Ranna Himawari, the strongest of them all.

tl;dr: An anime that’s strangely a non-harem harem that is still somehow pretty generic, but is well executed enough to be good.

This anime is about Rokudou, a high school student who’s just trying to have a normal school life. Unfortunately for him, the school he attends is full of delinquents and thus he and his friends are the primary targets of a lot of bullying. This changes when he find a magic scroll from his late grandfather that infuses him with a spell that causes all ‘bad girls’ to fall in love with him whether he wants them to or not, wherein ‘bad girls’ for ... the most part just seems to just mean delinquent girls. Getting strong delinquent girls on his side is enough to stop the bullying. However, Rokudou isn’t comfortable with a spell forcing girls to be in love with him. And as he knows nothing about magic, the only way he can think of to stop the spell is by helping reform the delinquent girls so that they’re no longer ‘bad girls.’

This anime is generally listed as harem, but it really isn’t one at all. I’m not saying that as some sort of defense as I actually generally like harem anime. However, this just doesn’t really have what is appealing about the genre, though it does have it’s own type of appeal. While this anime does have a lot of girls that are attracted to the protagonist, most all of the ones that matter seem to like him less over the course of the anime. For example, one of the first main characters that falls in love with Rokudou is Osanada. He successfully reforms her and it is explicitly made clear that this results in her no longer being in love with Rokudou, though she remains a constant presence in the story due to remaining a close friend.

How the rest of the heroines are handled is a bit more complicated. For example, Rokudou does help reform another bad girl named Himeno somewhat. But it’s not like she was a simple delinquent beforehand, so it’s kind of hard to judge just how reformed she is and it’s not like it’s clear how reformed she would have to be for the spell to stop affecting her. She definitely doesn’t seem to be in love with Rokudou as much as she was initially, but at the same time she still kind of sorta seems to care about him more than just a friend.

With others, they just kind of stop appearing after their arc so it isn’t clear where they stand. And with the main heroine, Ranna, it seems reformation is going to take a looooong time and thus the spell is just as strong at the end of the anime as the beginning. But my broader point is that the only time you’ll see Rokudou surrounded by girls that love him is when his spell actives and this causes a bunch of nameless girls that will never be seen again to mob him. Rather than girls, the vast majority of the time Rokudou is hanging out with his male friends. As such, this really doesn’t hit the notes that would be necessary to classify it as harem.

So the story isn’t really about romance with the girls, but rather about their reformation and the role Rokudou plays in that. This is where it gets complicated. While this isn’t a harem anime, Rokudou is still a lot like a generic harem protagonist. He’s overall just incredibly average. He’s not all that smart and he’s completely useless in a fight. The only things he has going for him is that he’s really strong willed and very kind. And that’s generally enough to allow him to help the girl in question overcome whatever it is that is causing her to be a delinquent. There’s usually a lot of fighting involved in this, and thus Rokudou’s traits generally manifest in things like him managing to inspire people through refusing to stay down despite how badly he’s beaten or things like his friends becoming his power. It’s all very cliche, but at the same time it’s pretty decently written and there’s a charm to the simplicity. The plot flows pretty well, though characters do seem to act very abruptly quite often. And in the end, combined with a lot of good comedy, it’s a pretty exciting and enjoyable watch.

The art and animation in this are decent. The art style is pretty unique and it definitely took some getting used to. And even then, I only find it decent and not especially good. The animation was pretty great with some surprisingly good action too. It’s obviously not at the level of the mainstream shounen battle anime, but it is much better than I expected. The OP is pretty solid in terms of the song and visuals. The ED has a pretty good song, and though the visuals are really basic I still like them. I also liked how both of them changed in the second half. Though I didn’t like how the OP played normally in the final episode, but it used the OP song as an insert in the climax too. It should be a rule to skip the OP when they do that. The background music was decent enough with some good tracks, but I can’t seem to find the soundtrack so I can’t be more specific.

Mixed Feelings

An absolutely bizarre concept of a show...

While at first glance, the concept of a weak dork who gets magically afflicted with the affection of every delinquent girl in his vicinity sounds hilarious; in the longer term this premise undermines the story it wants to tell.

Rokudo's goal is to use his power to reform the delinquents into better people; which is noble enough and certainly more interesting than an MC who wants to take advantage of every woman he sees.

However, thanks to the magic afflicting the majority of the cast, we can't truly invest in their growth. Every woman has been robbed of their agency once ... they fall for Rokudo. While most of the characters are actually pretty interesting and have solid stories, it's hard to say for certain that if they've moved forward in life or if they're just under the spell.

While the show seems like the setup for a harem, this too is undermined by the magic, as it is impossible to invest yourself in romance at any capacity when it's completely unwarranted. Thankfully the show drops any pretense of this immediately, and many characters stop displaying affection immediately. (Although it's possible this is out of fear of Ranna)

I think the concept of the magic is completely unnecessary, as Rokudo IS a good person and capable of making impacts on everyone in the cast's life. I kept praying that the conclusion would involve some sort of reveal that the magic wasn't real (although this wouldn't make sense given the reactions of strangers to Rokudo), or that perhaps it would wear off and not matter, but alas.

The female lead, Ranna, is also a baffling choice. She's by far the least developed, flattest character. While other characters have other things going on in their life (and some can even ultimately explain their interest in Rokudo beyond magic), Ranna is nothing more than a gag- an ultraviolent stoic tank who becomes incredibly girly and shy and dedicated to Rokudo at the flip of a switch. Even in the finale she seems to have no agency or character, so it's baffling she is framed as Rokudo's primary interest.
At other times she's a macguffin or a deus ex machina, an unstoppable superweapon and the primary thing stopping Rokudo from turning into pavement paste when he involves himself in gang affairs.

I think it would have been much more interesting I think to make Ranna's interest in Rokudo organic, and then have her get mixed up in gang affairs as normal, leading to Rokudo coming in contact with the cast he is dedicated to reforming.

Rokudou's bad girls.....Funny how bad this anime is, so.....

Story:

Pros: The only pro around here was seeing the protagonist from getting his ass constantly getting kicked by first bully to becoming this ladies man who can get any bad girls fall for him, and have the same bad girls protect him, but......

Cons: He just have to play this boring good guy card to which he could've rule the school and put an ends to bullying, using a talisman that his granddad gave him, Too bad that he has to be this guy who can but doesn't do it.

Verdict: 3 over 10.

Pros: Nothing to mention, cuz....

Cons: Everything were shit, the main girl Rana looks like a MILF, in fact there were too many MILF like female characters around here.

Character:

Pros: Nothing good to mentioned.

Cons: First of all we have the protagonist who has inherited a charm from his granddad that allows him to make any bad girl fall for him, in fact the Badder they are the more they'll fall for the guy, we have his 2 other lackies whom were part of the wussy squad like Colonel who IMAO is supposed to be better off as a bully and Chief who should be doing adult roles.

Enjoyment:

Pros: the only enjoyment here was letting the protagonist get his ass kicked even though he can summoned bad girls to do the dirty job for him.

Cons: It was still lame.
