Tokyo Revengers: Seiya Kessen-hen

Tokyo Revengers S2 is actually impressive. Impressive in the sense that it manages to be worse than season 1 in every aspect, which is saying something considering how laughably bad the writing and animation were at some points. I debated whether or not a review was even worth it for this dumpster fire, but I decided I’d air my thoughts out on this disaster. This will not be my most eloquent review, but it’s how I feel.

Season 1 was serviceable. The story wasn’t the strongest, but the yankee gang setting was new for me and the mystery of Hina’s murder was enough to keep me ... around. This season’s arc was some of the worst writing I’ve ever seen. The world that the author has created requires us to totally suspend logic. Are there no parents in this universe? Gangs of hoodlums just stand outside fighting all day? 14-15 year olds moving drugs, murdering people, terrorising local communities?

The Black Dragon gang is the main antagonist of the season, led by a 6’8 14 year old who beats his siblings. I could not help but laugh at so many of the plotholes in this season. Just a total lack of common sense from every character. So many situations that could have easily been avoided or solved with common sense. Yes, I know it’s a shonen anime and you’re going to have dumb characters and some ass-pulls, but this was too much. It was at every corner and every episode. Particularly the final boss fight in the last few episodes made me genuinely scratch my head time after time. That’s not even beginning to bring up how dumb Takemichi acts at every opportunity. Instead of taking the simple logical route for any given problem he has to overcomplicate things. Whether it’s the Taiju fight, dealing with Hina, Naoto, etc., he is just an insufferable character and it’s very hard to like a show when you have a MC like that.

I think if you don’t take the story seriously and just watch it to see how bad the writing is, how bad the character designs look, how poorly animated the fights are, how dumb Takemichi is, etc., you will have a lot of fun. Kind of like those honest movie trailers on youtube. Sit back, relax, unplug your brain and you’ll have a blast.

Touched on it earlier, but the art and animation this season were atrocious. It’s almost like they just did this season in MS Paint or something. Characters are stiff as a rock, often models are inconsistent, the fights look like they’re in slow mo, etc. I’ve seen the manga panels of this series. A lot of scenes were brutally butchered in the anime, ones that were meant to be emotionally powerful fell flat because of the utter disasterclass that was this season’s art direction.

But you know what, somehow I did find myself enjoying this show. It was so bad that it was actually good if that makes sense. Halfway through I just completely checked out mentally and reached a weird mellow mindset where I just cruised along with this show seeing where it took me and that was kind of fun. Regardless, that’s not saving Tokyo Revengers S2 from being one of my lowest scored anime.

The first season of Tokyo Revengers was a real smash hit as in a shallow mainstream anime once again- the worst anime to come around in the last few years for me. When you have a show that you find yourself thinking about at other times during the day, you know you've got a bad one on your hands. That really has fallen apart with season two, unfortunately.

There were two key points that made season one what it was: the characters (with a notable exception we'll get on to shortly) and the storyline. TR opts for the 'large cast' approach which, when not done right, ... can often end up with a chaotic character list that is hard to follow. To its credit, it handled that well and every character was well fleshed out and felt personable. With one exception...

Takemichi.

He really is what made Tokyo Revengers a 2.5 star anime instead of a solid 2. Had he been one of the major side characters, like Mikey or Chifuyu, the show would have had top marks. Given that he was the MC, however, it held the show back; the saving grace being that the show used its time to focus on everyone involved and not just him, which gave the viewer a break from the one dimensional, misplaced MC.

And that's the cardinal problem with season two - too much Takemichi.

For the majority of the second season, the show descended into 'MC is God Emperor regardless' mode and it's just lazy writing, to be honest. Compared to the first season's deep-dive into most of the major side characters, this season focuses much more on Takemichi and it really lets the show down; he has always seemed so incredibly out of place in this story that he makes no sense being there most of the time. That can be overlooked or even a source of comic relief at times, but not when he's the main character. Alas, now we've entered the realm of everyone worshipping every fart he lets rip, just because he's Takemichi. "The real hero of the day was Takemichi," it was said, after the defeat of Taiju. Funny that, I would have said it was Draken beating 100 seasoned fighters on his own in 5-7 literal minutes off-screen, personally, but obviously I'm just not graced enough to bask in God Emperor's crying glory. Let's not talk about the dive Taiju took from one half-baked Takemichi fist slap either, despite him getting knocked around by the much stronger Mitsuya at the start of the fight with zero repercussions whatsoever.

While the time traveling angle was a bit weak in the first season, it could be taken for the lighthearted excuse to tell an intriguing story that it was. In the second season, however, it's just wearing a bit thin; that said, it wouldn't if Takemichi wasn't so painfully dense. The amount of times you find yourself yelling at the screen with the answer to a Captain Obvious moment that Takemichi takes half an hour figuring out is ridiculous. For an anime centered around gangs and violence, why the writer made the MC a painfully thick, painfully weak idiot who cries every five minutes is a bit beyond me. If it's to put across that he's the glue that holds everyone together because he isn't like the other guys, it's not working, to be honest.

That said, this is still a good anime in its own right. As a Tokyo Revengers season, however, it pales a bit in comparison to its predecessor. I'll be looking forward to season three nonetheless, though if the show continues to descend into 'Takemichi is Heaven's gift to the world' mode despite him doing literally nothing but getting his sh*t shoved in, I might reconsider if there ends up being a fourth.

At least we still have Chifuyu, eh? He just gets more wonderful by the episode.

This is incredibly disappointing! It honestly frustrates me because Season 1 was an absolutely solid anime! One that I would absolutely recommend, but this season basically feels like filler! We continue our development from the end of the previous season, and most of the beats have a similar rhythm. The problem is that this season only features a single thread. The thread is perfectly fine, but it's NOT enough to carry the entire season. If this had been a movie or even 6 episodes long, I would have probably rated it an 8! However, because they decided to stretch it across 13 episodes everything ended ... up so incredibly awkward!

There's a bit of development, a bunch of nothing, a bunch of hanging around, a bit of development, repeat.
The fight scene is basically the same, as each character will often stand around doing nothing or take turns getting beat up with minimal consequences. It honestly felt like we were back to classic DBZ, in which characters spend entire episodes powering up. That's how bad it is!

Again, the core story and reveal and all that good stuff was FINE. The problem is that there wasn't enough content for 13 episodes. It's like as if World of Warcraft decided, 'You know what, a single quest per city is more than enough.'

You know what, let's poke some holes in the core story too. WTF is this boss man who is basically a 7 foot tall perfectly muscle sculpted mountain of a man 15 year old kid... You know what, it's FINE. Villains are allowed to be strong. 
How is Takemichi going up against him? He easily defeats significantly stronger fighters, yet somehow Takemichi is able to be a contender... You know what, its FINE, protag syndrome...

but then they just got lazy with it... They sell the Black Dragons as being essentially militarily trained super soldiers, then hand wave them away when it stops being convenient. It's just lazy. I'm honestly just disappointed. 

I always like to compare Tokyo Revengers as the shounen and simpler version of Steins:Gate. Both anime shared the theme of inevitability of future. The first season of TR was quite solid, and I enjoyed it a lot.

However, it’s sad to see this new Christmas arc got executed so badly. For only 13 episodes, the anime was dragged out and did not give me the satisfaction that I wanted. The start was slow, but it promised potentials with a menacing villain. However, when it mattered the most, the anime abandoned all logic, and even seemed to make audiences look like a bunch of idiots. The ... showdown episode was unbearable to sit through with dialogues that flabbergasted me. The main villain got dwindled down into a joke after just one episode. Takemitchy randomly gained guardian angle power where he would not die, even though he should have been squished in an instant.

Takemitchy is an inconsistent character. I hate to say it but he’s way too stupid for a twenty year old something dude. Some of his internal monologues made me want to punch him.

The last two episodes set up the new arc, and the show immediately improved in pacing after it got the Christmas arc done.

Overall, a major disappointment, but I will have some hope for season 3. 5.5/10

I mean, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this anime to begin with, but am I the only one who’s wondering what in the world happened with this season? Listen, my gripe with Tokyo Revengers has always been the same, and it’s no different with this season: restarting timelines, as a narrative mechanic, gets old real fast. I came into this season thinking it was time for something new to come out of this story, something with actual weight behind it that held my attention and didn’t simply get washed away and made irrelevant by the next timeline reiteration. I was not, as it turns ... out, granted that luxury. Instead, I couldn’t take anything seriously this season because I couldn’t count on it lasting for very long. Not only that, but Takemichi’s over-dramatic reactions to everything were exhausting. I don’t know if I could say that I liked Takemichi as a character to begin with, but I found him absolutely grating this season. The plot itself, beyond the timeline ridiculousness, did not once feel like something that I should care about. The beginning handful of episodes, especially, felt entirely inconsequential—I know they technically aren’t, but they felt so bland and weak that I couldn’t figure out why I should care about the newest timeline. Honestly, I was just holding my breath for something to feel like a real step toward the ultimate goal of this series, and I was left wanting, for the most part. There are still emotional or dramatic moments that I can get behind with this season, but really, I was just waiting for it to end.

This should have been an 80 min. movie! As much as I loved the first season of "Tokyo Revengers", I can't help but think this one felt slow and boring half of the time. Only like 5 or 6 (at most) episodes felt relevant and moved the story and characters forward. Everything else was just circling around something about to happen that took too long to happen and when it did... it was kind of disappointing. If they took only the good things of the content and decided to aim towards a full length film (80 min. as previously said), it could have been AMAZING! ... Every episode in this season is almost the same: it starts slowly, it develops even slower and when something good is about to happen, it ends. Then, the next episode manages to make the potentially exciting thing too short and moves into the next blah, blah, and the thing goes back to zero again. I wouldn't recommend this season to anyone, unless a huge "Tokyo Revengers" fan. And even so, maybe wait for a movie recap for this, because that would be the smartest thing to do with this material. I know there's people who liked it and good for them! But for me it was just average TV with almost nothing of the charm the first season had (including awesome music).

Tokyo Revengers: Seiya Kessen-hen

Despite a solid concept, the first season was already a tragedy, so I'm not surprised that the second season continues at a qualitatively mediocre level. The only exception is that I find this season more likable. It became more of a generic shounen, but at least it had some sort of goal, no matter how stupid it was.

The highlight of this season was the protagonist because he really started to develop and not just talk about it all the time. That didn't make this season any better, but at least it made it a bit more bearable. The rest of the characters ... were still a disorganized mess and the story continued to go in circles. The antagonist who I relatively enjoyed, has somehow lost all his brain cells this season and has stopped thinking. If this hadn't happened, there wouldn't have been a twist for the next season.

I still don't understand what Tokyo Revengers is even trying to get at. This manga/anime just can't decide on a flavor and is constantly trying to do everything and failing in every category imaginable. And this season you now got to watch 4 guys fight for 5 episodes instead of the time being used for anything meaningful.

Apart from that, why is every imaginable teenager in Tokyo Revengers a psychopath? The most normal student here would be the average petty criminal in our world. Their poor parents can soon do without a pension.

The anime is perfectly suitable for mediocre entertainment, it's not a disaster even if it may seem like one. Despite the gruel that the author has mixed here, it still has a certain entertainment value.

Season 1 is pretty alright, good entertainment if you ignore the gaping flaws re the time travel and how slow the MC is to realise that it's basically just Kisaki Tetta like cmon n how is this boy in a biker gang full of tatted muscly 13 year olds having mass brawls whilst somehow also having some form of pure non-crime related ideology without punching anyone etcetcetc but basically stop there first 3 episodes of s2 make season 1 look like Homer's The Odyssey you will be unable to bear it and you just might explode

Entirely predictable apart from the bits that make no logical ... sense, art style in s2 is weird like new Berserk weird, characters were unusually stupid and ridiculous, extremely unrealistic

To be honest i am giving it 8 star just for the fact that it is funny. So funny that even scenes that are supposed to be sad, emotional or serious, they too are funny and ridiculous. And fun fact, the makers thought they were emotional.

I would say it is ridiculous to the point that it seems more like a parody.

Every time I hear Takemitchy say something brave, it sounds like empty boasting, as if the writer has forced him into a role he was never fit for. He is supposed to be a gangster but, even run of the mill gangsters are more powerful ... than him. He is the captain of squad 1, whose previous leader was a badass but Takemitchy! He is just an ass.
The author seriously needs to rethink this story.

Alright back to main topic its second season. Starts off with black dragon yes. Another 13 yo filled with gang leader material on how powerdul Taiju is. Bro like second season it legit shows how Kesaki is a simp. Fr he killed Hinata on and on in the future because she liked ohr lame ass protagonist. Like wtf bro is obito wanna be but from da dollar store. Dont get me wrong tho the music are op is fire. Thats the only reason i watched the show

It is truly disappointing and frustrating how anime/manga as a medium has progressively grown dumber and brainless over the last years, only to cater to a crowd that has no bar for quality, or any standards for that matter, apart from "art and animation". The newest trends so heavily rely on stupidity as a plot device that if the characters are not dead from the neck up, there would be literally nothing happening in a whole series. The same mindless tropes are overused to a point where finding a show that contains minimum to none of that crap is a physical chore. But that is ... all fine if the art is unique and beautiful, and throw in extra points if the characters have a quircky and distinctive design and/or superpowers, and preferably their clothes explode on impact.

In case you've made it to season 2 of this mess, you would have probably noticed it is one of those numerous overhyped high definition slapstick dramas that studios have been throwing up and spewing recently, it would have been laughable if ti wasn't tragical and deplorable. My guess is, the only reason this cut it to a second season is because the tentalising premise of time travel to fix some horrendous future outcome and saving a powerless damsel in distress seems very temptive and promising. Of course, if done and delivered properly it can generate a masterpiece of a show, but in the case of Tokyo revengers, instead of helping improve this meyhem, quite the opposite, it makes it even more difficult to swallow.

What ruins this series the most, however, is not the plot, or the major lack of such in this case, it's not the painful pace either. It's the characters that have ultimately become the crashing downfall of an idea that could have otherwise made a decent and pleasant show. For one, the sheer count of characters introduced in a short amount of time has made it a struggle to keep up with each and every of them, regadless of how memorable design, quircks, nicknames and unicorn rainbows they've been given. Attempt acknowledged, but as the plot has not been properly developed and unfolds on many stages without a good explanation of what where and when, therefore hard to follow who was who and doing what for what reason, has become a pointless bout against the numbers. But even with that aside, if there was a reason all characters were written in 1 of the 3 categories, "good weak/cretin", "good strong/twat" and the "beginning-of-all-evil invincible bad/braindead", I can only assume it would be a colossal "dumb protagonist" trope recycle and reuse, and even if we turn a blind eye to the whole cast for being stupid teenagers, the MC is supossedly 25 or so, yet somehow he's been written as the biggest imbecile of all. It's a cringe overdose. By far, they are all completely overdone and disagreeble, have questionable if any motivation, little intelligence and conversational capabilities, and no redeeming qualities, justification or depth.

For as long as the consumer has demands only in the art department of new media, the studios and mangaka will keep selling the same bags of dirt, and what was once a must for a show to be considered good: plot, development, narrative, characters, is now only "recommended to have". With examples like Tokyoo revengers, the industry is walking on thin ice and I fear "RIP good anime" is a notion hanging in the near future, but seeing the teenage fanbase scale of shows like this or CSM, I probably shouldn't worry too much for the studios' pockets.

Whole point of the show is to save his girlfriend that is killed by Kisaki, many people die over the show, and whiny main character never wants to just kill the guy "because its his morals"???? But in the very first episode of season 2, we see the future of the main character when he orders the death of someone, SO HE DOES HAVE IT IN him, its such a stupid frustrating story, idk how anyone likes this absolute garbage.

So, I am not a manga reader, so do not know too much about the Tokyo Revengers manga. However, during season One I felt something about the whole thing. I felt like the story tries to show me something that is a shounen but goes 180 degrees to a different location. Well, It is, but unfortunately, it is not a good thing.


Even though the fact, that first season even had some flaws, for me, neither Takemitchy nor the Tokyo Manji Gang was not irritating. I loved the way that Takemitchy tried to show for spectators, despite his Rivercrying no Jutsu... And was kinda exaggerated but ... Manji gang was okay. Yep, it has some questions about the Gang but for me was a nice group that was only for Takemitchy's development (at least for a while) and supported the story. Well, after a year off I have to admit, this story is a big bulls**t. I am sorry but this is nonsense promiscuity.

As I wrote a bit upper, never have I ever read the manga and did not know the manga of Tokyo Revengers is a neverending shounen prototype. Probably it sounds not a big deal but it is. For me, even the Season One worked only because of the (questionable) character development of the Protagonist. But doing this stupid time travel without a good point is simply ridiculous.

Unfortunately, the Second season does not help at all. So far, this season is unambiguously awful. The whole story started to get confusedly mixed up and the whole happenings were just irrelevant. And I can not even say the new storyline is bad because it does not even exist. The second season so far wants to show the result of a problem (with probably Mikey) that WE DO NOT KNOW.

Also, episode by episode I am getting irritated slowly by Takemitchy. Since the Middle of the first season, his development is non-existent. Probably this is why I can not recommend this anime right now because people mocked Takemitchy as he was a crybaby, but I was never get irritated by him. Until the first episode of this season.

For me, personally, with this neverending style this story does not work, this concept can not be coherent to be a longer story. After this first bigger part starts to stagger in the aspect of coherency.

I am sorry but this whole Tokyo Revengers turns into a really deep mess. TR Second Season yet is a pointless irrelevant promiscuity, with an undetailed story that (I think) should not even, come this far(at least not in this way).

This anime is too imposing, the writer doesn't really understand the situation that happened in the anime, it's unrealistic in writing the story. especially the main character has no resistance at all in the fight. I feel the story really doesn't make sense for an anime of this genre. the main character is always giving lectures without being able to fight at all. Moreover, this anime in season 2 becomes even more long-winded. in terms of animation is also bad. don't try to watch instead of wasting your time.
