Kimi wo Aishita Hitori no Boku e

With the divorce of his parents, seven-year-old Koyomi Hidaka makes the important decision to live with his father. As a researcher at the Japanese Institute of Virtual Science, Koyomi's father is involved in the investigation of the phenomenon of parallel worlds. Through his father's job, the young boy meets Shiori Satou, the daughter of another divorced researcher. Soon becoming friends, the two spend much of their childhood together.

As Koyomi and Shiori grow closer together over the years, the two intend to marry in the future. However, their plan comes to a halt when their parents decide to marry each other. Now fated to being step-siblings, the two friends refuse to accept their new reality. Using their parents' research, Koyomi and Shiori escape to a parallel world to start their lives anew together, only to face repercussions that will put the very futures they strove for in danger.

This is the best anime movie of 2022 hands down.

This is the sister film of "To every you I've loved before" (Which you should watch first as they are interconnected but they can be watched in any order)

Starting off this anime is about the concept of Parallel universes and how that affects a human over the course of their life (entirely fictional not based off irl) And the romance between Shiori and Kuyomi. This anime starting off is so wholesome at times, the type of anime that you would imagine somebody rolling around and kicking their feet too. The bonding Between the two ... main characters Kuyomi and Shiori is just breathtaking to watch, don't be surprised if you find yourself smiling through the first part of this movie as they develop its super wholesome.

However this movie does HEAVILY focus on the idea of parallel universes and the way the execute it is flawless, honestly it had be interested in quantum mechanics and other stuff when I don't even like science. Everything about the concept is super interesting and fascinating to watch. This is also heavily like Sci-fi (like in the way of all the futuristic tech that you can see progress throughout the film)

This anime coming full circle can also be heartbreaking covering topics of loss and sorrow (Best way i could explain it I'm sorry) Honestly it's really heartbreaking at times as parallel universes are dangerous. But still despite the heartbreak the way the characters move through these difficult periods is realistic and some of the best media interpretation out there.

This movie is so good I wish i could yap about it in this review but i wont as to not spoil it for you. A must watch for any anime watcher new or veteran and is sure to keep you hooked the whole way, 10/10.

Mixed Feelings

This movie centers on the concepts of parallel realities and of what we wish could be and what could have been. Every reality portrayed on the screen is disappointing. Currently wishing I was living in the parallel reality where I never watched this movie

The story is unique, however dissapointing, the art is quite good and fits the theme, The characters are deep enough, but not a powerful statement on the human condition, the realism of man doing something stupid like sacrificing love for love is real in a very stupid way, some people will probably love this movie, I hated it

Sci-fi and Romance can be complicated genres to mesh together as either of them aren’t intrinsically conducive to the other’s progression prospects unless the writing allows them to naturally bounce off each other. Finding a necessary balance is crucial as downplaying any one aspect would diminish the overall believability factor, but KimiAi is a special case where everything is minimized. Teenage romances don’t particularly appeal to me, and while it can be argued that the film transpires over the entirety of human life, I’m inclined to stick to my initial term as the romance is established and contained in an adolescent form. It is difficult ... to sympathize with the leads’ situation as there’s never any satisfactory chemistry built between them, attributed to several plot conveniences and lack of emotional range from the voice actors. Technical jargon is used as the only method of furnishing exposition, often giving the impression that the film itself isn’t aware of what its talking about, exploiting parallel universe concepts to set up an ostensibly despondent destiny. It eventually takes the form of unhealthy obsession, an immature and flimsy representation of transcendental love, not quite offensive but certainly preposterous.

The majority of the production decisions play a significant role in the superficial character and narrative development, cheap general animation by feature film standards playing a notable role, while the direction is unable to maintain consistency and structure, most likely due to the necessity of accommodating for the counterpart film BokuAi. Having multiple varying endings based on order of watching sounds better in the head, but when the reliance on each other causes self-containment issues, the concept demands reexamination. Near the end of the film we see excerpts from BokuAi, inserted randomly to simply provide links to it, displaying no subtlety in establishing narrative correlation. Apart from these, the prominent problems include an overall lack of sufficient in-between animation, choppy editing, questionable music choices, and an abuse of montages. It surrenders most of the moments of intimacy to these montages, the primary reason why it becomes tough to connect with the leads’ relationship. Ultimately, it remains preoccupied with adhering to its concept, forfeiting intelligence in the process; a lackluster interpretation of desperate love.
