Tong Ling Fei (Psychic Princess) was such an enjoyable surprise! If you’re into historical romances with a sprinkle of supernatural flair and a fiery female lead, this one hits the mark. The story follows Qian Yun Xi, a noblewoman with spiritual powers who ends up marrying into the royal family in her sister’s place. What seems like a forced marriage plot quickly turns into an entertaining back and forth between two stubborn, complex characters who slowly let their guards down.

What really stood out to me was Yun Xi herself. She’s confident, clever, and doesn’t take nonsense from anyone, not even her cold, brooding husband, Prince ... Ye. Their interactions are full of tension, humor, and slowly building trust, which makes the romance feel more earned than rushed. The animation style is also uniquely charming, and though it’s a Chinese ONA, it still delivered the same kind of emotional pull I look for in anime or manhwa.

If you’re looking for a short series (16 episodes) that blends humor, romance, and fantasy with a strong female lead, Tong Ling Fei is absolutely worth watching. I’m definitely excited to check out Season 2!

Mixed Feelings

This show was just watchable enough. The main character (the princess) is barely likeable- I’d call her tolerable. Everyone likes a mistreated Cinderella-type who stands up for herself and can fight… but she only barely does those things.

Actually, she’s quite rude. She doesn’t know her place- her behavior shouldn’t be tolerated in an imperial setting, but somehow she gets away with it. She also keeps hitting people. I guess it’s supposed to be funny, but it’s just obnoxious. When I was watching, I just treated it as literary exaggeration, and mentally replaced each such scene with “she ... expressed her frustration in a humorous way”.

It’s not unenjoyable to watch her navigate various situations, but I only barely liked her and barely rooted for her. All in all, just tolerable.

And whatever was going on with that male lead? Him going from disliking her to liking her was like the flip of a switch, and I had no idea why it happened. It was still somehow satisfying to watch, since she never deserved the hate to begin with, but the show would have been better if they had done this emotional transformation properly.

The side characters have some potential, but they haven’t developed much. I was still waiting for their stories and personalities to develop when the season ended.

The art is not bad, but I didn’t like the main character’s design that much. Something with those lips looked a bit weird.

I would watch a Season 2, but this was not a show that left me pining.

This “romance comedy” left me infuriated in most episodes and I am genuinely shocked at the high ratings of this show. I will condense my thoughts in spoiler free general feedback.

Overall:
Except for the female MC and her “special friends”, I genuinely did not feel an iota of interest or connection with anyone, including the male MC. In fact most of them are downright horrible people and it makes it hard to root for “romance” when the whole time you just want the female MC to punch male MC in the face, and disappear for good never to be seen again. I thought it was stereotypical ... “cold guy turns good” trope, but no, the male MC is genuinely a garbage human and someone willing to abuse a woman repeatedly on whim, I absolutely do not want a relationship between him and the female lead. If anything the second brother who treated her nicely from the start is more deserving. I know it is wishful thinking but if they had wanted a relationship between lead female mc and male mc, they should not have portrayed male MC in such a poor light that it makes the viewer actively root against the main romance option of the show. I know I have no interest in season two anymore and I regret the time I spent watching this anime outside of enjoying the shenanigans of the female lead.

Story- 4/10 I give 4 for female MC, everyone else is zero. Predictable to a fault and genuinely not enjoyable.

Characters 2/10 none of the characters have any personality at all. The males are absolutely terrible. It seems they exist solely for the purpose of being playboys and can’t think of a single personality trait outside of being brazen pricks. The only character with some personality is female MC but she also has a lot of flaws in writing.

Art - 7/10 it is pretty but nothing out of ordinary, typical stuff you would expect

Overall enjoyment 4/10 while it was good for first few episodes, I wish I had stopped sooner instead of wasting time completing the series because it never did get better.
