Synopsis

In the years following a vicious war, the Empire of Zol now controls the land and citizens of rival Aquafa—except for Aquafa's Fire Horse Territory, where wild dogs that once carried the deadly Black Wolf Fever continue to roam free. When a pack of dogs race through a Zol-controled mine, Van, an enslaved former soldier, and a young girl named Yuna are both bitten, but manage to escape as the sole survivors of the attack. Finally free, Van and Yuna seek out a simple, peaceful existence in the countryside. But as the deadly disease once again runs rampant, they find themselves at the crossroads of a struggle much larger than any one nation.

I'm upset because this movie could have been great. However, it somehow managed to make me feel like I was watching a cheap imitation of itself.

Story: Awful pacing. They wanted to show a lot and didn't have the time. Also, this feels like someone not trying to copy other Ghibli films as much as someone who tried to learn from them and missed the mark. It was clear what every scene was trying to convey and how we were supposed to feel about the characters and that was the problem. This film harkens back to the old Ghibli films in its look and themes but is very much its own thing with a modern approach to animation. The director has made a point to highlight how this film's plot echoes the current times and that it only adds to the impact this film has on its viewers. The story is interesting and the animation is beautiful.

If I were to give any criticisms it is that some of the side plots and minor characters go slightly underdeveloped to an extent where it is sometimes confusing if you are not paying ...

I went into this movie just knowing that Ando was at the helm and Production I.G. was the production studio. Based on that knowledge I had some decent expectations for the movie but did not know anything about the story other than a trailer on YouTube. With that out of the way...

Without getting into details, the movie suffers from some pacing and plot development. There are a decent number of factions involved in the plot(s) surrounding the main, but it's hard to focus on which ones are important with all the quick scene changes. At times there are multiple ... scene changes that don't connect in a very short period of time, with some not driving the story but depicting casual scenes. It may take another watch to get more of a feel for it, but I found myself at times wondering who the antagonist(s) were. There are other reviews out there that mention this and I would have to agree, this movie could benefit from more development in the form of a series.

Animation/art wise, the landscapes and scenery in Princess Mononoke were much more captivating and it really drew you into the feel of the forests and rivers of the old world. It's similar to how a movie shot with a narrow angle lens wouldn't show the grandness of a landscape, whereas a wide angle would. The characters, animation, and colors were done well though with the animal designs not being too cartoony. There WERE moments where action scenes felt impactful, albeit for a brief moment, but it was handicapped by the music, or lack thereof.

For sound and music, it's possible the soundtrack was not done well at the theater, or maybe it was just how it was recorded, but scenes where there was intense action or drama, the music felt muted. You could hear it in the background, but you wished it was more forward. There are movies where the music is set further back to focus on the sounds of clashing swords or a storm raging, but this was not the case. However, when the story was depicting more casual events, the music did show up and added some depth.

Overall, the movie was entertaining and there were times I laughed and times I felt emotional about a scene, but in the end, I felt a bit underwhelmed. It may have been my imagination relating this film to others like Princess Mononoke or Sword of the Stranger, but I just craved a little more out of it, emotionally and story wise.

This film felt a lot like a prequel to Princess Mononoke. Here's my take (for those who have seen the film).

In the final credit scene, a Kodama appears just barely in view. This ties this movie to Princess Mononoke where Van (the main character) turns into the Shishigami, the black wolves eventually turn white due to Van's kindred spirit and become the care takers of the forest, the boar that Van stops while protecting Yuna causes the line of boars in Mononoke-hime to destined to become dumb, Yuna eventually has a lineage that ends up becoming San (Princess Mononoke) and is left in the forest to be taken in by the wolves because of their connection in this film, the son from the village (not sure if his name was mentioned) eventually has a lineage that produces Ashitaka. Ashitaka and San are destined to meet in the next film (Princess Mononoke) because their love transcends time. The end.
