Honestly, I don't get why this anime is hyped. Perhaps the manga readers are hyped by whatever stories that aren't animated yet, but as a non-manga reader at episode 6, Vinland Saga barely met the threshold for mediocrity.
The art is uninspiring, the blend between CGI and traditionally drawn art is abysmal, the poor use of soundtracks failed to augment the emotional element of the story. What exactly is special about this anime?
Perhaps the premise of a Viking story is new (for animes, at least), but a fresh premise alone can't carry the whole show. While there are some plot points in the first six episodes

I just don't get what the appeal of this show could be.
First, let's get this out of the way: I fucking hate the 'Historical' tag. Every time I see the Historical tag, I get fooled into thinking the show is realistic. After all, you'd assume that something that is 'historical' would be true to history. Even working with the lax definition of "set in the past", you'd still expect a sense of realism. Yet every time without fail, I am continuously disappointed. Instead of being set in the past, every 'Historical' show is set in an alternate universe's past—one in which any bullshit is excusable ... Dec 29, 2019
Greetings ladies and gentlemen, I will cut straight to the point.
Have you ever experienced a work with an intriguing premise capable of appealing to you… being undermined by a plethora of flaws and handled half-heartedly? Vinland Saga is such a case. I do not consider this to be a great anime, let alone the AoTY; for all (or actually, because of) my love of medieval history, I couldn’t resist reviewing this too ambitious-for-its-own-good work. Note: this work may contain spoilers, at the final section for the plot. [1. Starting with the visuals] ... Aug 12, 2019

What do you get when you combine one of the most fascinating old-world cultures with a medium known for turning out some of the most visceral action and drama series in the entertainment industry? You get a fairly cliche’ and familiar prologue that is mostly a victim of 15 years worth of hype and fervor. As someone who has not read the manga, I know absolutely nothing about Vinland Saga and the things that make it great. Sue me. But, I feel like even if you’re a huge fan of this series, you gotta admit that this introduction is at least kinda shit, right? What ... Oct 3, 2019
I watched Vinland Saga with really high expectations from all the hype and people recommending it.
Unfortunately I was very disappointed, here is why: While the animation and character introductions were great, everything really falls off after 3-4 episodes. The pacing was disoriented, I can't really know who is important to the story progression. Some episodes are literally fillers, which I am not against but this is a 24 episodes anime. Character strengths/powers don't make any sense one time it is realistic and the other would be a one man army. So far everything is just a mess, while the anime is somewhat different as it is showing a part from ... Jun 24, 2020

One of the most unique and intriguing features is the realism they try to embrace in the show. It shows the everyday lives of early 11th century Europe, the cultures of the time, and actual historic events. Unfortunately, this makes all of the unrealistic elements that much more jarring. For example, a guy throws an axe beheading multiple people without deviating course in the slightest. Also, a man throwing rocks the size of watermelons half of a kilometer gives it a battle shounen vibe breaking the realism they’ve attempted to construct. Getting rid of some of the physically impossible scenes ... Jan 9, 2020
Vinland saga is basically an anime about a frustrated kid fighting for revenge during 24 episodes. The protagonist, Thorffin dosen't develop much, wich makes you end up liking more the antagonist than him.
Althought,it has quite thrilling batles, especially at the end, and a lot of mind games between the characters. I believe that, if a second season is produced, Thorffin will be a better protagonist and have a better development than is this season. In conclusion, if you have better animes to see first, don't watch this, and if you are the shonen batle type of otaku, don't watch this neither. Jan 3, 2020
The most unique and interesting character is killed off. The story follows a bastard child that cycles between rage and disgrace. He is either hell-bent on revenge or on the run. The story is remarkably dull for a world set in wartime. The fights are forgettable. In the end, he doesn't even follow through with his plan, but not for a lack of trying. It's amazing what receives high ratings these days. Animation was subpar. Character development is incoherent. Thorfinn was an unruly beast that needed to be put down. He'd lunge at you for mentioning his late father or the ideal warrior. They all

The premise of Vinland Saga is interesting enough to keep viewers captivated in the world of the vikings that happen to have inhuman strength. While the story is lacking in what can feel like slow progression and boring sequences, it serves the purpose of achieving what I believe the main goal for this series is. This goal being life lessons and development for Thorfinn and the Prince. The entire season, every second is devoted to pushing the goal further. I have hopes that this anime will expand in the next season in order to fill out more purpose than just these two things. It is

I was hyped for months to watch Vinland Saga, and in the end was left disappointed after finally seeing it...
I'm left confused as to why this series is so well received. Perhaps, all an anime needs these days is to be action packed with nice animation, all covered in a thick edgy bubble. Having an interesting story, character development and character arcs don't seem to matter nowdays... Story 4/10 There's not much of a story in Vinland Saga. Synopsis pretty much describe 80% of the entire plot. For the most part, this anime consists of battles, episode after episode. All that people wanna do in this show ... Oct 8, 2024
Really good Anime set in a fictional viking era with some really amazing moments. Characters are pretty well rounded with the anime going into there motives and outlook on the meaning of war, life, and right and wrong.
Watched it coming from Sousou no Frieren and would class it on par if not better. Gonna try to avoid spoilers but have to address the key flaw, character arcs. While characters are fleshed out, overall character progression is lacking especially for "Thorfinn". It feels like your gonna follow his development until you get to the final episode (~10 years in world) with what feels like zero development, you could watch ... Aug 21, 2022
I'm a bit surprised that I didn't enjoy this more. It has a thoroughly compelling story, a solid cast of characters, and good pacing. I can't fault it for much *except* the viewpoint character chosen for the season: Thorfinn. The season acts pretty much entirely as a launchpad for whatever is to come for his character, and as such he is entirely one-note. This is pretty frustrating to watch, as generally I want a protagonist to be actively developing but nothing happens in his development until the instrumental climax of the season. Just about every action he does is uninteresting because it doesn't amount to

I have no clue why people think this show is well written, or why they think the characters are deep. The two main characters(Thorfinn and Askeladd) are both some of the edgiest edgelords to ever exist in anime. Personally I find their edginess to be so much that it becomes ridiculous and comedic, and while that does make me enjoy the show, it doesn't make it good. The show has no idea whether it wants to be gritty and realistic, or show near gods accomplish ridiculous feats, which once again I personally find comedic, but not well written. The story would probably be good if

Let me preface this review with a word to those who haven't watched Vinland Saga yet: Start from episode 6. Now stop spoiling it for yourself and start watching. But seriously, skip the first 5 episodes if you want to fully enjoy the good parts of the series.
Maybe it's because I haven't read the manga, but my feeling after finishing this anime can be summed up with the word "disappointment". I feel like the first 5 episodes belong to a different anime from the other 19. It sets up a character arc that doesn't happen, and several concepts that have no pay-off. It sets ... Sep 24, 2021
Vinland Saga is trying to be a good anime. It's trying to be Berserk. The thing that sucks is that I want it to succeed. I legitimately wanted to like the story because I think it has a lot of potential. I love stories with a large cast of characters and different plots of intrigue (see ASOIAF). Vinland Saga fails to establish that.
Let's start with the action, just to get it out of the way. Despite presenting itself as an epic viking anime taking place in the real world (even including and referencing real figures such as Cnut and Brian Boru), the fight scenes are ... May 3, 2023
Vinland Saga's first season impresses with its captivating storytelling and finely crafted characters. However, the animation falls short. Particularly, the utilization of CG, especially in the initial episodes, lacks seamless integration and fails to contribute significantly to the story. The grand battle sequences also suffer from lackluster visuals, failing to meet expectations. Additionally, several background textures clash with the show's aesthetic, resulting in a less immersive experience.
That being said, the narrative and characters are really well done and show the potential of the series. The accompanying soundtrack deserves recognition as it effectively heightens the emotional impact of various scenes. Vinland Saga undoubtedly holds great promise, ... Jan 3, 2021
Overall had high expectations but it was really dry and not that exciting.
Story 5/10 - It's a simple story. Get revenge. Kill people. Which of course, isn't a bad thing, since it's easy to remember. However many other things were missing that hampered my enjoyment. Art - 8/10 - High quality, high fps animation. Very nice to look at, not much more to say. Sound 3/10 - The OST is very weak, and builds basically no hype. Compare it to the epic orchestras and choirs of Attack on Titan, for example, which create drama, suspense, and energize the viewer. Here, I was just sitting unentertained as a ... Aug 23, 2023
Heavy on drama, trauma and blood comes off as a "Game of Thrones" style show. The action is there but drama and trauma is the main focus. The show reminded me of attack on titan but without the fantasy/scifi themes. The historical fiction certainly slides to the mythical level and less realistic. If you are in for Drama, Trauma, blood and a historical fiction setting this so may be for you. For me I enjoy more comedy, and lighter tone.

I watched the show a few months ago. There's something about the show that doesn't seem real.If Vikings don't have true purpose in their life and killing, snitching, cheating or being killed
Doesn't change who they are then how can someone do this after knowing the true purpose of life? I'm talking about thorfinn. He lived with his family until his father was killed and his father was an honest man.His father gave his life for his son and for the people he was with. After that throfinn decides to stay with askeladd for his revenge and did the same thing as a Viking(killing, snitching, cheating etc).My theory is who does the ... I’ve been putting off watching Vinland for a while now. I wasn’t really interested in it but I’ve seen a couple of reviews of it recently saying that it’s the best anime of all time.
Turns out it was extremely mediocre. Vinland Saga? More like Midland Saga 😴😈. The show doesn’t really have a unique or creative story. It’s just about a kid who wants to avenge his father’s death. That’s it. Something that’s been done a million times in media and it still doesn’t try to be different. Nothing interesting else happens. The characters were also extremely average. If ... |
