Asagao to Kase-san.

Not a plot beat you won't see coming from the first five minutes, but absolutely adorable. It's like they compressed an entire anime series by distilling it into its four most important scenes, Steve Jobs (2015) style. I love that.

Seriously, there is something to be said for the fact this even exists at all. For decades and decades there has yet to be a single completely positive portrayal of WLW romance in Japanese animation. Every single show or movie either has elements of abuse, intense drama, or an unhappy ending, and sure as heck none of them focus on the romance itself. I love stories ... about couples who are already together, and Kase-san makes it even better by being about awkward lesbians!

I don't write reviews for anime, but I felt obligated to write for this one. And that's because of how unique this anime is for it high score.

First of all, it's not a story about great romance facing great hardship. If you expected that then turn away. There aren't any big dramas in it, nor is there big events that the couple must face in their life.
It's ordinary story about ordinary love between two people. Their only hardship come from ordinary sources. Being to shy and insecure. Being too dense to see some things. To be in love for the first time. To want other ... for yourself alone. Wanting only the best thing for other, but being too afraid to lose the one you love.

Not every story needs to be big. Not every love story have to face a grand hardship. Sometimes the most beautiful story can be found in the life of the most ordinary human.

Some may have find it boring, but for me it was heartwarming.

Objectively, this OVA sucks. There is a whole 7 years of content that needed to be adapted into 1 hour, and well it just didn't happen. I won't say I've read any of the web comic because I don't really plan on doing that. The story sucks ass it's basically Horimiya but worse. The art is pretty, but the OST actually fucking sucks. You can tell the budget on this was very small. There's a lot of dead space and a surprisingly little amount of voice lines. The characters are boring as fuck, it's literally Horimiya again but I still found myself enjoying this. When ... it comes to love in a medium, it's very easy to get sucked into it. Especially when it comes at such a relatable time in life. This is a 4 at best. But I found myself in the chaos of it all again. The clarity struck me and now I'm back underground. Perhaps only knowing the cave and shadows makes the light that much brighter.

It's incredibly cute because that's all it ever wants to be.

Well, let's start by saying "I'm not too interested in Yuri", which should hint at why the score is not in majority's favor, and I'm really sorry if this review might've attacked your opinions or preferences.

Our main characters, Yamada and Kase, are in love, and both are girls. That's the basic plot.
Throughout the whole runtime, all I ever thought was, "Looks like they (the creators) just wanted to show a sweet romance between cute girls" and that's pretty much the only thought I had been carrying throughout the whole thing. It was hard to feel ... a strong connection to their romance because it felt like I couldn't comprehend what they were going through whenever there was a conflict. I just liked the momentary slow moments, ones where music and atmosphere take the front instead of the plot and characters. That ending though, just made me want to quit but thankfully it's the end, so I skipped that one part and directly went to the credits.

I don't want this review just to be me ranting, so I'll do some work.
The whole thing looks really cute (I actually watched this because it looked cute). Throughout the whole 58 minutes, the warm and fuzzy atmosphere continuously shines, literally. What it really does well is the character animation. The occasional leaves pop up on Yamada's head emphasizing her confusion or embarrassment, the shiny rays of light that drop like the rain, and to glimmering eyes of our characters whenever they talk to each other. So much care was given to make them look cute and it's truly beautiful. Even in that dreamlike sequence where Yamada dives into her pool of thoughts with her friend's voice, even in that heavy moment, the tone of being a heavily light-hearted romance doesn't disappear.
The romance, the unpopular and popular fall for each other, isn't new or original, and probably the only gimmick is that they're already in a relationship, and now they are just figuring out what they should do. Strictly speaking, the story is really forgettable, and with enough time, the same can be said about the characters. The main reason being it works on cliches and tropes, which is nothing wrong with the case regarding any other romance work, it just didn't work. Bluntly put, this looked like that one heterosexual love story that I eventually forgot, got a Yuri remake.
After my watch, I started to question what even necessitated this work at all, but then I find out the manga which the OVA adapted from, got this following of being the best in the fanbase, and the only Yuri that the majority of Yuri fans enjoyed (A cliche for every fanbase I guess).

Who should watch this?
If you can relate to Yuri works, or just enjoy Yuri works, or just want something cute, then I think you should give this a try.
While I didn't regret my time watching, I thought I could've spent my time watching something more enjoyable.

Sapphic here... so I think my opinion is valid. This anime was just... boring? Contrived? Shallow? It had its cute moments and the art was very nice, but I honestly put it in 1.25x speed to finish the damn thing. There wasn't much of a plot that I could tell, and what plot there was was revealed by telling rather than showing; the writing was so shallow. I'm sure the source material is better-written, but I won't ever read it. I'll give it a 6 instead of a 5 simply because I want more WLW representation in anime, but it sucks that this is the ... best we've really got right now by way of WLW anime. RIP

Not a good solo movie.

It's pretty, and sweet, and some nice character interactions, though little character development. Will be much better if it gets continued, but as is I would only recommend if you're willing to get into the manga afterwards.

At first I thought it was the *end* of a manga storyline, as the relationship launches very quickly. Knowing this is the start of the story improved my opinion a lot, as both main characters are fairly 'basic' in design and their relationship lacked depth. Will think about reading the manga now, and perhaps update the review after.

Overall, pretty but mostly empty, ... maybe a good start.

I couldn't finish it, honestly. I like yuri, but honestly this was mind-numbingly boring. It has nothing special going for it except for good art.

I definitely wouldn't say it's realistic. It's pure fluff, about a couple in a honeymoon relationship. It's very bland. And it's kinda creepy to stick your head into your new girlfriend's sheets to sniff 'em on the first date lol.

This has been done to death, and its execution kinda pales to stuff like... Their Story, for instance. (manhua) Very very bland, and not even cute enough to make up for it. :(

It's too bad, I think I set my expectations too ... high because of how high quality YagaKimi ended up.

Kase-san and Morning Glories is the type of anime I wish had a longer series because there's so many cute and fun interactions between our two main characters. But we'll settle with an OVA.

Story: Kase-san and Morning Glories is a one hour long OVA that's centres around two high schoolers, Yamada and Kase. The basic setting is that they both just finished middle school together and started dating, just before high school started. Unlike many other romance (or shoujo ai) anime where we watch the wind up, up until our two characters start dating, our story starts off with them already dating. ... The plot isn't anything super special on paper, but it's far from poor. We get to watch all the complications that come with dating while in the middle of high school - between being part of a team, school-related activities and hanging out with other friends. Simply put, parts of everyday life sort of get in the way and we are constantly asked how we can get away from that. They don't go for anything that would shock the audience too much, but seeing how our characters go about tackling their problems is very sweet to watch. It very much goes for those wholesome or cute interactions between Yamada and Kase. They solve those problems together and attempt to grow their relationship with each other.

This anime actually moved at a pretty quick pace. There's very little "extra" in there and problems are either solved, or not, fairly quickly. So, for those that want to see a romance anime that moves fairly quickly, this is the one for you. By the end of it, it does feel like the show has a little more to give. I somewhat wonder if there are any plans to keep this story going because they certainly leave that door open. You are left with a few questions regarding what happens to these characters because there are some plot lines left unanswered, but this was a very enjoyable story. (8/10)

Characters: This story is almost entirely done with our two characters, with side characters getting virtually nothing. And that's fine! Yamada is completely in love with Kase and when something falters, she gets either really worried or flustered. She is the ultimate worry-wart. You really feel for her when she worries about her relationship with Kase and that constant worry could make her seem like a weak character, when she just needs a bit of a confidence boost. Her main interest in this anime is that she's very passionate about flowers and plants. She definitely knows more than she leads on in her interactions with Kase. But if they decide to create future installments, you can see how life problems could get in her way. Kase is extremely athletic and very popular with her peers. This does tend to worry Yamada, and Kase's not always the most observant of that. I actually really like this because you get to see how the couple work through each others flaws, and this is definitely Kase's biggest fault. Kase does visibly get flustered at times and it's almost as cute as when Yamada does. Her character does somewhat imply that she should be confident, especially around her other friends, but we clearly get to see that she isn't always. Mikawa is one of Yamada's friends and they seem to be pretty close but she never really adds much. Most other side characters aren't given much of a role such as Yamada's teacher and mother. (8/10)

Art: I have some mixed feelings about the art in this one. The close ups are of fine quality, but as soon as there's more movement or further shots, the quality does dip a fair bit. It wasn't enough that I would say it was bad, but it did distract me, just a touch. That being said, it might just be a style thing that I personally couldn't really go to bat for. (6/10)

Sound: Nothing really to complain about here. The tracks that were present were fine. All three of Berry Morgan (Kase), Bryn Apprill (Yamada) and Apphia Yu (Mikawa) were really good, though I thought Bryn Apprill played Yamada's frantic-nature very well. It made me smile multiple times. Luci Christian (the main cast's teacher) and Patricia Duran (Kase's coach) also add in a couple lines, which is surprising considering their long resumé history, especially the former. (7/10)

Overall enjoyment: I like this one! It never seeks to go over-and-above, but maintains a light feel for this romance anime, though with the added touch that it is between two female characters. For example, Yamada does mention that it's is a relationship with "two girls", but it's never really stated why that's different. Which is fine! This isn't a dramatic anime. If you're in the mood for a short OVA, then Kase-san and Morning Glories is definitely worth the hour watch. I secretly hope there's more because I love the interactions between our two characters. I feel like it won't happen, but I'm not giving up hope yet! (8/10)

Literally almost cried in half of this OVA. Everything is just so sweet and tender, yet creeping in is some actual serious questions about the dynamics of their relationship even sex and societal views and some of the frustrations about being in a queer relationship.
I have wished more yuri anime could have been this well written for a long time. I am glad to finally see something more heartfelt and genuine instead of being a boring monologue which some yuri's seem to have or when they fall into similar cliche's which was refreshingly NOT apparent in this OVA. (IE: a girls only school, the ... yuri couple has to be hyper feminine, or they are roommates.) I can't wait to see more quality content yuri come out of Japan, I absolutely love this OVA.
