09 was really the peak of these movies, huh.
By all means, I think this movie is ultimately mediocre. It has a idea that I like (Dream Worlds and people using their dreams to fight is cool. I like that), but it's sandwiched in between a bunch of absolute nothing that never really gets anywhere. Now, I only have 09 as a point of reference, but that movie felt natural. Crayon Shin-chan is a weird 'grounded but we do the cartoon movie shtick' franchise, where most of the anime is surprisingly tame and grounded, while the movies are absurdly bombastic. This movie is no different, but
...
in a much less 'passive' way that kinda ruins this for me.
Now, I can get behind that. I managed to get behind the kids in 09 doing stupid bullshit for a quarter of the movie before it actually gets REALLY good, but.. there's nothing that really pays off in here. Again, the adults (Nohara and Misae) have the best parts, but there's a pattern of "the adult has a reaaally sad moment that's meant to make your heart grow bigger" in these movies, which I don't mind as long as it's well-written.. Hiroshi was the best part of 09 to me, because that flashback was genuinely endearing. so Misae getting the spotlight here was nice.. Until you realize she only does things for five minutes.
Now, when you consider that the main reason on why this movie happens is because of your usual "boohoo my mother died and my dad is trying to find a way to bring her back/bring me comfort over the death of my mother" tropes, it's not that hard to see why. But I also think this plot-point is absolutely worthless and adds nothing of substance to the film, because it only really comes into play at the last part. Removing this specific scene would virtually change nothing for the film and that inherently annoys me, because it's such a simple, mediocre solution.
It never appears anywhere, it's shoved into the last portion of the movie, and it just.. exists until it needs to be solved. Stuff happens for the sake of happening in the last portion, and it's not even funny. It tries to be compelling, but fails because Misae never really gets to do anything in this movie beyond fighting the 'bad guy' with Hiroshi. If Misae had some interesting stuff to say with the movie-exclusive character, it would've felt a bit more neutral.
Not exactly the best Shin-chan movie. I'm gonna go watch the other movies as a point of reference to see if I judged this movie too badly because of me liking it's concept.
