Here is a list of the best animes I have seen, within these subgenres.
Not all of them are seinen, but most have an adult theme.

Some animes that I consider serious and with a final message.

I don't recommend them because they are necessarily good or bad, but because they show us another way of thinking about what we had watched and can impact our lives in some way. And I also believe that some of the realistic animes from this list can help us to see how we are leading our lives.

Series that I consider to be more than just a dumb animation.
(I could forget many series, especially the old ones)

These anime have strong & dark depictions of suffering, mental illness, trauma violence, sex and various sociopolitical and economic problems in a grounded way and without sugarcoating it, although in fiction it is often impossible to completely avoid the distorting lense of epicness or melodrama when portraying reality.

When I say that these shows portray reality, I don't mean to say that they are necessarily based in material reality, as some are sci-fi or fantasy. What I mean, is that these shows portray the bleak and harrowing aspects of human condition without pulling any punches, and without romanticizing it (to some extent).

These shows often have a positive and hopeful overall message and/or ending sometimes, so I wouldn't call this a list of "depressing" shows. However, they have in common that they revolve around brutal and mature depictions of psychological, physical and spiritual pain of individuals and society, while also having a haunting and opressive feel to them.

An assorted stack of anime series with some talented detectives and mind-boggling mysteries to uncover. Highly recommended for fans who love to put on a thinking cap and wrap their head around, trying to unravel secrets alongside the protagonists.

Current anime subculture and state of affairs are absolutely unbearable to the average joe; navigating the mess that is anime schoolgirls in short outfits and submissive maids turns many people off this medium, and rightfully so.

My list aims to provide shows and movies that have mature themes for mature audiences, and that don't feature unnecessary fanservice, moe/loli/yandere character archetypes, and some clueless kid of an MC that gets unjustifiably strong within a short period of time overpowering veterans and masters alike.

These are based on movies and shows that I have watched *personally*, not on the general anime community consensus. These are movies and shows you don't have to be embarrassed being caught watching in public or in private. Only the first season of each show is featured, with up to 4 more if you decide to start the series.

Enjoy.

Some are more loosely similar than others like Moriarty the patriot but others are spot on like monster and Babylon those are my Top 2 recs for death note btw.

Code Geass isn't here because imo I don't think it's something you'd like after death note there not even similar.

Here are some suggestions for anime closer to the themes we see in series and movies with North American and European actors!

Common factors:
• high marks from those who completed the work;
• story with complete character and plot development, where nothing is frivolous and can be taken up again in the future in the work;
• without undue exaggeration;
• script well made
• More realistic and coherent story with the universe of the work
• They are not extremely complex
• Managed to hold the attention of many people until the end
• Memorable endings

Other factors that can help bring other people closer to anime: a few episodes, and works dubbed in your language.
